About the Author
NA'IMA B ROBERT is descended from Scottish Highlanders on her father's side and the Zulu people on her mother's side. She was born in Leeds, grew up in Zimbabwe and went to university in London. At high school, her loves included performing arts, public speaking and writing stories that shocked her teachers! She has written several multicultural books for children and is the author of 'From Somalia, with love', a novel for young adults. 'Boy vs Girl' is her second books for teens. She divides her time between London and Cairo and dreams of living on a farm with her own horses. That this is the best book for children on the Hajj is unfortunately not saying much. Literature on Islam for children tends to be horrendous. I was even speaking to someone who distributes children's titles on Islam and mentioned that she was embarrassed by some of the books that her company had for sale, but that they could not find anything better. Naima Roberts Going to Mecca is written in a smooth and flowing style. It covers all of the basics of the Hajj, but does not really give background history, i.e. why do Muslims go on Hajj in the first place. One will need to know a little bit about the Hajj in order to fill in the details for children. My children keep asking me what one thing is and then another. The appendix at the end is useful for these purposes. My children enjoy reading this book on a regular basis, especially during Hajj season.
Being that there are so few Muslim children's books and even less on Hajj or Mecca, we kinda had to buy this. I haven't read Robert's Ramadan Moon but had read some of her other writing. I like the illustrations. The idea is cute that the reader is going on Hajj as well. But I found the writing a bit clunky. I ended up making up a story to go with the pictures rather than read what was on the page which was more of a description than a story. Glad to have more exposure in the book world but not a favorite. We only read it twice and probably will only bring it out at Hajj time.
This book is great for teaching children about Hajj. The family in the book goes through all the rites. It's the only children's book I have been able to find on the subject.

I advice to have this book for kids, it explains how Mecca is important for Pilgrimage Muslims. Very good job
Going to Mecca by Na'ima B. Robert is a great book for introducing young readers about the pillar of Islam which is the pilgrimage of hajj to Mecca. Readers get a first view of what goes on and who goes for hajj. I would suggest that the language be more gender neutral such as using "they" and "them" instead of "he," or "she." Also, the author repeats, "heads bare," but the heads of Muslim women are not bare since they are covered with the hijab, so that causes somewhat of confusion for readers, as well as showing a bias in favor of males.
