what a huge help with interpretation. My kid attends a fine arts school and we're working on monologues for Auditions. It's so important to know what was really happening before and after the specific verse to really play it out. The sidebar interpretation helps so much with this aspect. Highly recommend to anyone studying Shakespeare

This is a Shakespearean Comedy of Manners from before the genre was even really a fully developed thing, featuring love affairs, a revenge plot, some humorous incompetence, a faked death, and much more. I'm not a big comedy fan, but this is certainly a good example of the genre at the time from which it came, and I actually quite enjoyed it. When it comes to the works of Shakespeare as a whole, I would say that this is a less memorable example, but definitely has some positives going for it as well. For one, it's far less well-known than many of his more famous works, so it doesn't feel familiar as you read it. The characters and plot also tend to grow on you, even as the language isn't quite so memorable, and the plotting and mistaken identities aspects are always good plot points, whether you're speaking of today or centuries ago. As to the edition itself, I found it to be greatly helpful in understanding the action in the play. It has a layout which places each page of the play opposite a page of notes, definitions, explanations, and other things needed to understand that page more thoroughly. While I didn't always need it, I was certainly glad to have it whenever I ran into a turn of language that was unfamiliar, and I definitely appreciated the scene-by-scene summaries. Really, if you want to or need to read Shakespeare, an edition such as this is really the way to go, especially until you get more accustomed to it.

Left and right format is great, better than parsing footnotes, but find another version. Whoever was hired to "translate" from Elizabethan English for these likely doesn't know the Virgin Queen from Elizabeth Bennet. The right page modern language translation usually adds nothing, in many cases is an exact copy, but in a significant number of instances completely misses the meaning of the words and/or line. I suspect that the publisher hired an English major from a minor college, paid them peanuts, and got what they paid for: a lazy, careless translation. In Modern English, "these suck".

The Arden (individual) Shakespeares are the most comprehensive texts available for public consumption. The introduction gives a history of the performance of the play (with photos), the sources used, describes differences between the versions (quarto vs folio), and so much more. My favorite part is that each page has explanations/translations for unfamiliar and archaic terms in the play (I.e. you don’t have to go to the back of the book for an explanation of what “zounds” means). That said, this isn’t my favorite play by Shakespeare, but that is not the book’s fault... I like measure for measure better.

it helps tremendously having notes and context side by aide to the text. there's also a lengthy introduction about the story, language and Bard himself. If you're a beginner you will still have to put a lot of effort in, and you will likely need other resources as well, but this is an excellent starting text

This is a comment about my (purchased) paperback copy of The New Cambridge Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." On the last page it says "Made in the U.S.A, Lexington, KY, 18 April 2018." The Amazon warehouse that usually ships my orders is in Lexington. Did this warehouse actually print this book to order (it arrived April 20), under permission from the Cambridge University Press? I wonder because the printing of the text does not appear to be of the highest quality, as if the press or the printer was low on ink. The pages are not numbered. The still images printed in the introduction are grainy, as if they have been blown up too large. If you are interested in this particular NCS edition, I don't recommend buying it here (at least not for the price I paid, $11.95). It simply has the look of a facsimile.

I'm the parent of a 12 year old girl, and we watched the Kenneth Branagh version of Much Ado, and since my daughter is particularly fond of the Korean form of Manga (called Manwah, I think), we got several Manga versions of Shakespeare's plays. They use Shakespeare's language (not all of it), and are a good "gateway" to reading the plays themselves. The visual style is dramatic and impassioned, which fits well with the emotions for teens. The images remind me of "story board" images used to plan the visual shots for a movie -- therefore, I would say that the images add to the intelligence and thought put into the reading of the play.

There are few films as joyous as Much Ado About Nothing. Much of this joy comes from the beautiful visual shooting of this film and the Italian Villa and estate where the entire story was shot on location. Follow the process with the director himself, by reading his book and you will enriched by the tender loving care that went into creating this masterpiece.

Do I feel illuminated by the knowledge of volatility cycles in the market I have read about in the book? Hardly, though I have to admit it's one of the most important points you can learn from this book. Indeed, to me, the most important lessons I have drawn from this book are:1) the utility of standard deviation in particular stages of the trend, with the application of Bollinger Bands as much as a stand-alone indicator, as a guide of the strength of the trend (however, I prefer to watch price against 34 periods, instead of the proposed in the book 14 and 50 periods),2) the application of a 200-period CCI, (however, while testing, I have found 220 periods to be working even better as a clear distinction of the trend direction, with a band of +/-30 around 0 level),3) the importance of watching the retracements as the levels, where the institutions have to add to their positions,4) rules of trading discipline (at the end of the book).Other than that the book is way too long, riddled with errors (like a 'principal' instead of a principle etc.), repetitions, empty phrases and irrelevant information. The valuable information could easily be contained in max 100 pages instead of 466. It feels like reading the authors thoughts as they were coming without much care for eliminating the repetitions, dead-ends etc. The last chapter is completely unrelated to the core of the book and complicated to the point of utter uselessness. In the text about the Andrews Pitchforks the readers are misinformed about the 'Schiff Parallel Lines", which - based on the illustrations - should actually be called the Sliding Parallels - simple parallel lines of the median line and its parallels. The very name 'Schiff' (after the name of one of Dr. Andrews students) should only be applied to other types of pitchforks, which have not been covered in the book. However, the book can't be described as boring, it contains interesting parallels and parables, but other than that and the few gems for traders, it's just largely reading for reading.

This is a kindle Fire review.ordering and receiving were flawless. Mark Whistler has developed his own unique approach to market timing. Volatility, its measurements, characterists and types. The greatest majority of volatility books (and articles) focus on options and/or the vix. The depth that whistler goes in his analysis shows me he's been at it for awhile, being intimate with his methods. These analysis carry across all time frames and markets. This type off work interests me because of its nature. There are hundreds of TA books nowadays - how many are volatility based, but non option or vix based?Very few indeed. On the other hand the book needs a serious editing, far to much print and not enough examples via charts. Learning is enhanced through visual repetition. The reason for the missing star. btw the code is free.

Mark Whistler has done it again!!! I have purchased his other book, which I highly recommend as well, Trade With Passion and Purpose. Volatility illuminated is a very original and very refreshing book that I have read in a long time! His knowledge of the markets and his brilliant writing style are duly noted. If you are not willing to think outside the box and are content with the herd mentality then this book is not for you. But for those that would like to expand beyond the typical preset technical indicators and incorporate tools that properly reflect the uncertainty of today's markets and how to capitalize on it, then your search end right here. Mark is not your typical trader/author that base theories on back testing and hypothetical results, he has put his money on the line testing in real time. Not only that, he doesn't leave his readers hanging with doubts and questions. He thoroughly explain further with numerous examples in his free webinar that I was fortunate enough to attend on his[...] website. He devote all his time and passion to helping others and time is never fixed. For example, he spent 5 hours + of his time for free to help people with any questions on how to properly apply these methods. Now to me, that is dedication and that is rare to find nowadays. The price for this book doesn't justify the treasure of knowledge that is written in this book. Especially when you compare it with overpriced fluff books that flood the market on a monthly basis!

This is a book which is certainly more useful than the ordinary technical analysis books. It shows a different perspective about market movements. The problem with it is the dilution of the ideas through more than 450 pages, while 200 were more than sufficient. Repeating same things over and over again doesn't add anything to the quality.Nevertheless, the book is surely recommended IMHO.

The Horror Film

From the Back Cover

The Horror Film is an in-depth exploration of one of the most consistently popular, but also most disreputable, of all the mainstream film genres. Since the early 1930s there has never been a time when horror films were not being produced in substantial numbers somewhere in the world and never a time when they were not being criticised, censored or banned. The Horror Film engages with the key issues raised by this most contentious of genres. It considers the reasons for horror's disreputability and seeks to explain why despite this horror has been so successful. Where precisely does the appeal of horror lie? An extended introductory chapter identifies what it is about horror that makes the genre so difficult to define. The chapter then maps out the historical development of the horror genre, paying particular attention to the international breadth and variety of horror production, with reference to films made in the United States, Britain, Italy, Spain and elsewhere. Subsequent chapters explore: The role of monsters, focusing on the vampire and the serial killer. The usefulness (and limitations) of psychological approaches to horror. The horror audience: what kind of people like horror (and what do other people think of them)? Gender, race and class in horror: how do horror films such as Bride of Frankenstein, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Blade relate to the social and political realities within which they are produced? Sound and horror: in what ways has sound contributed to the development of horror? Performance in horror: how have performers conveyed fear and terror throughout horror's history? 1970s horror: was this the golden age of horror production? Slashers and post-slashers: from Halloween to Scream and beyond. The Horror Film throws new light on some well-known horror films but also introduces the reader to examples of noteworthy but more obscure horror work. A final section provides a guide to further reading and an extensive bibliography. Accessibly written, The Horror Film is a lively and informative account of the genre that will appeal to students of cinema, film teachers and researchers, and horror lovers everywhere. This film study book follows a different path due to the film fan approach taken by the author. The book begins with the perfunctory introduction to what comprises a horror film. The author handled this difficult task can be handled with an open-ended definition and mapped out the historical development of the horror genre. What I liked about this book was the breadth of the horror films mentioned and dissected. One can tell that the author, a horror film fan included many films that were favorites of his. He also spends time on the different kinds of monsters, villains, henchmen and settings of the various films. Mr. Hutchins also delves into the audience appeal and cultural significance of the horror films. One can sense and tell that the author revels in the horror films of the late-1960s through the 1980s. The variety of films mentioned and the awe of the author make this a fun and entertaining read for a true film of the horror film.

I've read a handful of books on horror cinema now, and this is the best I've encountered so far. It's a bit of a slog for the first 20 or so pages, but then it picks up. Hutchings's main aim is to explore and even revel in the diversity and richness of horror cinema throughout its history and at any given point in time. As such, we find him frequently pushing back on over-simplified or overly tidy accounts of particular horror sub-genres or historical movements. It's a great place to start for anyone who wants a grounding in the history of the horror film and in the key themes in horror film studies.

It's been said (I think by Mark Twain) that a joke is like a frog. You can dissect it to see how it works, but it will lose its life in the process. Is the horror film also like a frog? For Peter Hutchings, the answer is almost. His analysis of horror film - appropriately titled The Horror Film - offers a lot of insight into the genre but doesn't kill enjoyment of it in the process.Hutchings starts off showing that it is difficult to even define what a horror film is. The term really only came into use in the 1930s with the original Universal monster movies, including Dracula, Frankenstein and The Mummy. Of course, in hindsight, it is easy to see possible horror movies from the silent era, including The Phantom of the Opera, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and The Golem. Is the existence of the supernatural a requirement? If so, what about movies like Psycho or Jaws? As Hutchings illustrates, even a rather clear-cut genre like the western is not easy to define; horror is even harder.Subsequent chapters in The Horror Film look at various elements in the horror film, such as the nature of monsters, the psychology of horror, the use of sound in horror and the differences between "classic" horror and "modern horror" (the latter roughly categorized as beginning with Rosemary's Baby and Night of the Living Dead, when "good" was less likely to triumph). Hutchings introduces us to the theories of other writers as well. Some consider the horror film as statements on race or class or gender differences, and while Hutchings gives such views their due, he also is clear that at times, overanalysis is done.Hutchings is both critical of the horror genre and affectionate towards it. This is not the easiest of reads and is seemingly designed for students of film more than the lay reader (such as myself). That is not to say that others won't get anything out of this, but this is not a quick page-turner. If you are a fan of horror movies and have the patience for this book, you are likely to get something out of it. The Horror Film will allow you to appreciate these movies in a new light.

I bought this item to help me write and analysis my thesis paper. I found it to be helpful. It has overview of critically analyzing major films in the Horror Classics as well as the Modern. There is nothing you can't find on the internet but i found it much easier to get information of this book.

This was for my Horror and Sci-Fi Film Analysis class, and I found it to be an appropriate overview of critically analyzing major films in the Horror Classics as well as the Modern. The author did a good job explaining in detail elements of what characterizes the horror genre, how culture plays a role in influencing the symbolism that pervades classic horror films, and the increased use of violent and sexual images in modern "slasher" films.

I needed this for class. It can be a little boring in some chapters and a little hard to understand but overall, it’s pretty interesting. The author does reference a lot of horror films, so this can also serve as an inspiration to watch some of those films if you haven’t already.

I enjoyed reading this informative book. I read this along with "The Monster Show," and I have to say that this book contained much more information about how to analyze the horror genre. Although the pace is slower and the writing somewhat scholarly, the author's passion for film shines through. I feel like I got to know him by the end of the book. If you are looking for an introduction to analyzing horror films, I would read this. If you are looking for an introduction to the history of horror films, I would read, "The Monster Show." Together, they complete a well rounded study of the horror film.

Good Quality and fast delivery. The book itself...The class I took has been using this book for almost 9 years so that says something. I personally thought it was a difficult read. It should be an easy enjoyable read considering the topic. There were parts that were informative and then there were parts that were "no, duh." The font is small and there are no spaces. It felt repetitive and just all around meh. I was throwing a fit by the end of each chapter and found it extremely difficult to get into. I will say that there are hardly any other books out there that analyze horror films and I was happy that my textbook was fairly inexpensive.
