Ruth Carter has done an amazing job of describing in plain English the US Federal and State laws (and even a few from foreign countries) that relate to blogging. A lawyer's job is to try to think of all of the bad things that could happen, and develop a plan for dealing with them ahead of time. This way, if the worst does happen you won't be surprised. Ms. Carter has outlined a wide variety of legal issues relating to blogging, and how to know when it is time to hire your own lawyer.The book covers: * the most cost-effective way to register a copyright on your blog * how not to violate the copyrights of others * legal issues to consider if you invite other people to write guest posts * what happens to your content when you die * when is the writing in a blog considered free speech * when is the writing on a blog considered a crime * when is the writing on a blog likely to get you fired * how to protect confidential sources * and lots moreI highly recommend this book to anyone who has, or is thinking about starting, a blog.
This is a thorough legal treatise on blogging, but I am not a blogger. I found this to be very helpful as I am a writer and a public speaker. Much of what Ms. Carter has to say in regard to blogging is applicable for any one whose words will become public in any way. There are points that she makes that should be heeded by those who post on Facebook, blog, write public speeches, sermons, books, articles, etc. Very well done in a concise yet developed manner with lots of information in short chapters that sum up the responsibilities and cautions when one's writing or speaking will become public. This is a great investment as a reference book for so many of us. It will help you to understand the law, how to keep your nose clean and how to protect yourself.
As a partner in a business law firm in the midwest, I find Ms. Carter's book, apparently her first, to be surprisingly well-written. Even though it is not a legal treatise, it is carefully researched and misses none of the crucial details when covering such topics as copyright, defamation, and trademark law. It is highly readable and useful to anyone who posts material online as well as anyone who hosts such postings. Its low price makes it a great buy.Worth mentioning: This book limits itself to explaining "what the law is". It does not go into practicalities such as "If I'm threatened with a lawsuit for copyright infringement, can I apologize and tell them I have no money?" or "What are the potential costs/benefits of a defamation suit?"Nicely done.

While it sounds scary, Carter's well-reasoned and well-researched material should ease your fears, and make you think. You'll be a better, stronger, faster and safer blogger for reading -- and heading -- the material in this book.Yes, it is a "must read" for any established, beginning, or wannabe blogger.
A lot of my reputation and income comes from how I interact with people online, so while I might be be a bit silly at times I never try to be reckless. I have too much to lose. Because I've been online for a long time, I thought I knew all the ins and outs of protecting myself online.But I am not a lawyer. Ruth is. She's also a very avid blogger, so is not preaching from the sidelines. This comes from her experience and knowledge on both the Blogging and Legal sides of the topic, and provides an excellent guide for anyone who would much rather spend their time creating new content than arranging bail or defending themselves from a lawsuit.
