Having spent a lifetime researching New Jersey shipwrecks, and as President and Founder of the New Jersey Maritime Museum, I can't say enough about this well-written book and its relevance to New Jersey's rich maritime history. Capt. Nagiewicz has succeeded in accurately portraying a part of our history that has largely been ignored by historians. Sadly, our schools teach little about this subject; perhaps this book should be on the list of "required reading" in our schools.

Very interesting book of New Jersey's history. Well researched, I would diffidently recommend this book. However it wouldn't hurt to edit the book for grammar.

Awesome read, couldn't put it down, very riveting, loved the book and looking forward to more from the author, it got me reading others in the series, I'd strongly recommend it to anyone, it's a must read, keep them coming Mr. Nagiewicz, you're a great guy and a great author

There is no one else with remotely the knowledge and experience in diving the coast of New Jersey (and much of the Western World, for that matter), as Captain Steve, and he brings that experience and knowledge to the fore in this tremendous account of shipwrecks and even subway car wrecks (yes, you can dive on sunken subway cars off the coast of New Jersey). A terrific addition to every maritime history and archaeology library.

I first discovered Kadavy when a friend recommended his first book to me: Design for Hackers: Reverse Engineering Beauty. In that book, Kadavy's prose is as eye-grabbing as his insights are eye-opening.So I was excited to read this book. Again, I was dazzled by Kadavy's way with words, but the impact on me was much deeper this time, as the subject of this book is very dear to me: how to achieve consistent creative output.I believe some of us are, by temperament, born to create. If we don't labor to transfer the contents of our inner-world into the outer-world, we will silently die a spiritual death. Then eventually, we will die a physical death, with our art still trapped inside of us.This fact may be obvious to many, but when you focus on the urgency of creating, it typically makes us creatives more neurotic. We obsess over unimportant details, and get trapped in self-defeating thought loops "This isn't good enough." "I'll never make it". "I'll never finish this."Personally, these thought loops used to leave me with a sense of helplessness. It even triggered a deep depression in me last year. Superb, simple, direct, and sincere.I particularly like the opening which tells you why you might wish to stop reading the book. That won me over. Charming.EDIT: Reflecting on this book five days after reading it, I am impressed by the simplicity of Kadavy's thinking. He's not trying to invent anything new here, he's just trying to HELP.Here are some notes I made from the book:- Ideas are FUEL not a judgement- Look for the Pump Idea, the idea that makes your heart beat faster.I love how he talks about the Voice in such a non-mystical way, very practical.I appreciate for the first time really that when a great idea doesn't work out there is real sadness and disappointment. I never noticed that. Thankyou.- Appreciating overcomes fear and doubt. Magical advice!- The work of art reveals itself THROUGH itself. Kadavy speaks beautifully about the mystery of creativity here.My next action is: Set a timer and work on a creative project that inspires me for ten minutes.

"The Heart To Start" is a concise, thought-provoking read with minimal repetition, that shines a light on the reasons why it's hard to get the momentum to begin something, and in doing so, arms you with a new perspective that can help remove obstacles and clear the path towards doing the creative work you were meant to do.It's a common practice these days for authors with successful blogs and podcasts to distill them into book form and republish their content. I'm happy to say that "The Heart To Start" is not one of these books. David Kadavy certainly draws from what he's learned from dozens of interviews he's done for his popular "Love Your Work" podcast as well as his own life experience struggling to overcome creative blocks, but the thesis he constructs here is an entirely new one within the library of his work."The Heart To Start" deconstructs the reasons, both emotional and practical, that starting something new can be difficult. These explanations are helpfully paired with ways to reframe your thinking to reduce the weight of these blocks. Some of these factors are in your head and tied to ego and emotions: What if everyone thinks my work is awful? Others are simply fallacies and biases that humans tend to get stuck in: This project is going to take so much of my time so there's no way I can start it! Generally always tackling an interesting topic, Ian Bogost's problem it's the academic way in which he approaches subjects, pushing theories that don't feel like they play out in the messy realities where art meets interactivity and skill/reaction based challenge.Sometimes his writing style is a little too provocateur, a little too imperialistic, though that is often employed in delivering an interesting idea or thought.If I could I would have given How to Talk About Videogames 3.5 stars.

This is actually a collection of a lot of things Bogost has written online, but it works very nicely. It's a beautiful little paperback and the content itself (if you're not aware of Bogost's writing) is excellent. There are a growing number of people writing about video games in a critical and intelligent way but Bogost is in a league of his own. Comfortably the best writer on video games around.

There are a lot of ways to do games criticism right and a lot of ways to do it wrong. While there are things that I disagree with Bogost on, his insight on how to talk about video games is clear and helpful for anyone wanting to get into the craft.

Less a tutorial on ways to approach and discuss video games than a collection of writings by Bogost. This is not to say that’s a bad thing! Bogost has a rich perspective on games in a field of analysis he more or less founded, but understand this is more a collection of philosophical writings than a how-to of critical analysis, as the title suggests

Do you ever ponder how Rothko paintings and Doom have both constrained their creators tocertain types of expected forms? What about contrasting William Carlos Williams’ imagist verse to Monument Valley? If so ‘How to Talk about Videogames’ (2015) by Ian Bogost is the book for you. It’s full of well written, serious criticism of games in the spirit of Art, Music and Literature criticism. Bogost has a PhD from in Comparative Literature and is a Professor at Georgia Tech. He also designs games. The book is a collection of related essays.The book has a clever introduction that looks at the purpose of criticism itself which is really good. Bogost says that reviews and criticism are different and deliniates them carefully. Then the book goes on to discuss Mario Kart, Ms Pac Man, Home Alone, Flappy Bird, Bully, Puzzle Games, Sports Games, gaining mastery in games and various Independent Artistic games that aim to be videogames as art. Bogost also ponders if games will be perpetually an adolescent art form.As far as this sort of thing goes this book is about as it gets. It’s also worth noting how games, compared to comics and other art forms are getting criticism like this fairly early in their existence. Games are particularly hard to write about because the act of playing is so critical to the game just as criticism of sports in an artistic sort of way is very hard. The book looks at the plot of games and considers how novel the revelation but this sort of criticism doesn’t work as well in things where the narrative isn’t that important.If you’re interested in games and read The Atlantic or the New Yorker or the arts section of The Economist or something similar then this book will provide some thoughtful and entertaining times.

I came to this book on the strength and delight of Bogost’s book Alien Phenomenology, a long-time favorite. This book, How to Talk about Video Games, is a strange choice for me because I am a most occasional of occasional gamers. But I am a computer modeler, and my interest in digital objects is based on trying to understand how such things represent real objects and their relationships through relational mappings of real objects to digital ones and back again. There is something similar to gaming in these endeavors. This book is not about that per se, but I found his insights into what makes a good game, how we play them, how games succeed or fail, how marketing works in the Darwinian processes that drive games into the forefront. It explores the history of gaming and its evolution. The book points to the possibility that digital games are worthy of critique in the same way that literature and art are, with their own set of purposes and conditions of satisfaction. All in all a fantastic book (even if one is not a gamer) that explores the place of games in our culture. I’d say that if you are interested in games enough to have enjoyed Cline’s Ready Player One, you’ll find this book fascinating.

Siri is a fantastic addition to the iPod touch. Imagine talking to it in stead of typing. I didn't even know what Siri was before this book. I do now and am learning every day to expand my knowledge about her. Get this book to learn what I'm talking about.

I haven't had the time to read the book yet, but browsed through the whole thing and I like it already. It certainly has a lot of useful and fun information about how you can use Siri. I will be using Siri more, now that I know all of the things that she can do.

Siri is great and worth upgrading to an iPad 3 or better. Wife's iPad 2 and friend iPad 1 does not have Siri. Once you try it you will love it. The book explaines all you can do with Siri. You will fall in love with her!

The book was informative easy-to-read interesting definitely a cleaned up version of the grittiness, emphasizing on the Camraderie and brotherhood

I thought I knew all about the "black hawk down" incident, after all I had seen the news when it happened, the photos of Mike when he was a POW there and seen the movie BHD....but WOW........this book really opened my eyes! Lots of details and important things in the book that the movie either would not show, or could not show. "The arm" thing was one, and I won't blow the "plot" of the book if you haven't read it but that, and Perot, Clinton, and the detailed story of Durant's capture, the "mosh pit" and his injuries. The fact that his captors moved him and what that was like for him, the guards who watched him, how Mike connected with his guards, how he worried about his military code of conduct (as most military folks are taught to adhere to the strict code if made a POW).This is a great book and I enjoyed my Amazon bought hard copy and may give it to my ex-boss who was also ex military(as I am) and let him read it as am sure he will enjoy this book..which reads like a thriller.It is a "can't put it down" book and I read deep into the night on about three consective nights on this great book. Highly recommended for those with an interest in the Black hawk down incident. FIVE STARS

I enjoyed reading Michael Durant's story. I honestly did not know anything about the subject matter. After reading the book-I have come away with a deeper appreciation for what America's military does. I read it during my lunch hour and never once did I find myself dozing off and looking for other books to read.

Blackhawk down was one of my favorite movies of all time. To read his personal account was even better. It's amazing what he went through and even more amazing what he remembered. I really enjoyed reading about the rest of his career as well in the 160th, especially about his time in Iraq. A true hero that deserves all the praise with this book.

I thought the movie was an accurate depiction of the events at the crash site but after reading this book, no way. Michael Durant brings the men that died that day back to life and tells the stories of who they were and how they got into super 62 and eventually the crash site. As you read this book the level of detail transported back in time and it's like you were there in the events as they happened. I thought it would just recap the movie but instead you go from Korea medivacs to grenada, to training in the U.S. and eventually to somalia. After reading In The Company of Heroes I appreciate how experienced and talented those men were. I remember watching the events unfold and the names of the dead on the tv screen but this book shows that those men pioneered many of the tactics and equipment that our forces use today. Its an amazing journey through this book. The movie was a complete waste of time and got almost all the facts of the crash site wrong. If you had any interest in the events surrounding black hawk down this is a must read! I can't wait for his next book.

I don't read a lot of nonfiction, but I'm glad i made the decision to read this story. Very inspiring. Made me grateful that we have such dedicated soldiers protecting us. Wish I could say the same about our politicians.

Loved it! Mr. Durant does a great job of telling his story in detail. I especially enjoyed how candid he was. He tells what he thought when the President called him after his release. He talks about his thoughts and fears in captivity. The story takes us into the rooms where he was held captive and we go through the terrifying experience of being held prisoner while seriously hurt with multiple major injuries that prevented any chance of escape. Highly recommended.

Excellent,excellent book. I'd recommend reading Black Hawk Down first for an overview of the battle, but even if you don't, either way, this is a great book. Mr Durant just tries to tell it like it is, how it happened, and tell the stories of his fallen comrades, who are the "heroes" from the title.I was in the 101st, in fact I was at Campbell when Durant was flying non SOG missions, and I went to Panama, so his career flashbacks were cool to read as I could relate. But even for someone who may not have been there, the flashbacks provide a backdrop for who he is, who the Night Stalkers were, and the mentality of these SOG operators.Fantastic read, highly recommend.

Worked great for my class, what little we used it. I'm a MET major that is required to take this electrical course, so it was a little outside my field of study. The book wasn't too bad, and the Eastern Education Edition (International) was actually recommended by our professor. Did everything we needed it to do.

Book was in good condition and complete. Just what I needed for class.

This "Eastern Economy" paperback copy of the book contains all the same information as the hard cover, but at 1/10th the price.

I purchased this book for a class and instead of receiving the right book listed in the picture I got the international version.... wonderful. The international version has the same information, the page numbers and example numbers are not the same though. This means that when I am in class and the professor says turn to page 245 i actually have to go that page and then flip back and forth to find the real page.

My son is at Mass Maritime and would be lost without this very informative book.

Concrete examples, check lists, a variety of institutions in a variety of locations. Unbelievably helpful...Ordered lots of extras to give to others involved in the same or similar projects.
