Forgotten Fire, by Adam Bagdasarian

From Publishers Weekly

Drawing on his own great-uncle's experiences, Bagdasarian covers the years 1915-1918 when a boy from a wealthy, well-respected family from Bitlis, Turkey, is stripped of everything simply because he is Armenian. "The prose is often graceful and the events are as gripping as they are horrifying," said PW. Ages 14-up. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

When I first began my prison sentence, I was looking at more than a decade "behind bars," and I was feeling intense self-pity. So I found myself reading books about people who were in worse situations than I was. On the extreme end of that spectrum were books about the "Holocaust, like Night" by Elie Wiesel and "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl. I realized that suffering can go much deeper than what I was experiencing. I read a book by Emile Zola about coal miners in nineteenth century France and realized that, even today, there are people who are "free" (not in Prison) who I would not want to trade places with. Even so, I was still suffering (and of course, I created my own suffering) enough to pray, "God, please help me," every night until I fell asleep. I did that for so long that it became automatic when I closed my eyes. I wasn't so much praying to get out of my situation as praying for help in dealing with it because I knew I had to be punished. But today, God willing, I only have four months until I'm somewhat free again. So I really have no need to read such depressing, bleak stories of human suffering and misery. However, I read one anyway. It's called "Forgotten Fire" by Adam Bagdasarian. It's about the Turkish genocide of Armenians during World War One, and it's every bit as horrible as the stories one hears about the Jewish Holocaust. It follows the plight of Vahan Kenderian, a twelve year old boy who witnesses the deaths of his family members one after another. The details were so graphic that I almost had to stop reading several times. It's unbelievable what one human being is capable of doing to another. And it's frightening to think that given the right, or wrong, circumstances, that this can, and most likely will, happen again, and can happen anywhere. Maybe now was a good time for me to read "Forgotten Fire" because it reminded me of what it felt like to have my whole world shattered, and more importantly that no matter what happens to us, we can still pick up the pieces and move on, stronger than before. The fire of adversity will either consume us or make us stronger. And this is one fire I do not intend to forget.Written by David Allan ReevesAuthor of "Running Away From Me"

Considering that the Armenian Genocide is generally considered to be the first of the twentieth century genocides and the precursor to all the others, it is rather surprising, not to mention sad, that it is one of the least known of the twentieth century genocides. Of course, that has a lot to do with the Turkish government denying the genocide to this day. But the Turkish government is supported in its denial by two governments which should know better. To this day the U.S. Congress can't seem to muster the will to pass a resolution condemning the genocide. Because to do so would alienate the one and only nation which must not be alienated: Israel. Considering that Hitler used the forgotten Armenian genocide as a pattern and a justification for his genocide of the Jews, it is most shameful for Israel to be complicit in Turkey's denial. But this is supposed to be a book review, not a political rant, so I'd best go on with it. "Forgotten Fire" is a fictionalized account of Adam Bagdasarian's great-uncle's story of his experience of the Armenian genocide when he was a boy of twelve. In the author interview at the end of the book, Bagdasarian says that he chose the fictional format in part because as fiction he wanted to involve the reader more emotionally rather than just analytically. He succeeded in that effort quite well. "Forgotten Fire" is a powerful, brutal book which leaves the reader shaking with helpless fear, anger and disgust. As the book opens, Vahan Kendarian is the privileged, rather spoiled, dissipated youngest son of a prominent Armenian government official. He lives in one of the largest homes in the area, all his needs are met and he is comfortable in his safe home. That is, until the Turkish gendarmes start coming to the house. It starts when the gendarmes take away his father, the stern but loving backbone of the family. The one who tries, without much success, to instill "discipline" and "character" into his youngest son. But of course father will be coming back soon, so there's nothing to worry about. Until the gendarmes come back again, this time shooting his two older brothers right in the family garden. And Uncle Mumpreh disappears. Maybe father isn't coming back.Eventually the remaining family members - Vahan, his sisters, his only remaining brother Sisak, his mother and grandmother - are driven from the house too. One of his sisters takes poison to avoid being raped at an inn that is being used as a way-station. Then the family and hundreds of other Armenians are made to walk for days and days with no food or water. Upon finally reaching a river where they expect to be allowed to drink and rest, the Turkish soldiers set upon the Armenians. Vahan's grandmother is killed inches from him. At his mother's insistence, Vahan and Sisak escape leaving his mother and one remaining sister behind. Eventually Vahan is on his own, his protective family having been stripped away one by one. Now the boy with no "discipline" or "character" must somehow survive on his own.Through a combination of luck, determination and bargains with the devil, Vahan does survive. For a while he is even under the protection - and the charming spell - of one of the Turkish leaders, Selim Bey. Throughout his bitter trials, Vahan remains loving and human and eventually he discovers that he does indeed possess the "discipline" and "character" that would make his father proud. That is, had his father not been killed too.I was struck by how naïve Vahan remains in many ways. Early on, Uncle Mumpreh gives the women and girls a vial of poison to wear and take in the event of ... Vahan doesn't know what, but it must be something worse than death. When Turkish soldiers take some of the girls and women during the nights at the Inn, he doesn't know what happens to them, but he knows from their screaming that it is something horrible. Nonetheless, when a young nine or ten year old girl is brought to stay with him at Selim Bey's, he naively believes that she has been brought to be a friend to him. Witnessing her repeated rape is what finally breaks Vahan's enthrallment to Selim Bey. Still, later on, Vahan doesn't make the connection about why a young Armenian girl would be staying with the German consul. Vahan's naïveté and his concern and care for these girls is not only touching, but it is something that helps Vahan retain his humanity in the face of such brutality. Selim Bey tries to teach him to reserve his friendship for those who are "worthy" of it - those who can help him, not "waste" it on those who are weak. Vahan's refusal to learn this lesson is ultimately what saves him - morally if not physically.I highly recommend "Forgotten Fire". It is a great introduction to the Armenian genocide. As the story of one boy, of course it does not give a complete picture of the political and historical forces at play. But it puts a human face on a sadly forgotten chapter in the history of man's inhumanity to man. Having read this story, I now want to know more of the details of that chapter so that the memory and lessons of the Armenian genocide will not be forgotten.

An excellent historical telling through the lives of people who were the history. The Armenian Genocides convinced Hitler that no one would notice his abominations, since the genocide of the Armenian people was dismissed so easily. Written without the horrific detail, but with the sadness that the survivors and families suffered. This is another book that helped me explain this family history to my child and her children.

Kudos to Mr. Bagdasarian for an exquisite book about this important, little-known historical event! This novel at all times maintains an intimate focus which bonds us emotionally to the participants in the genocide--the victims, the perpetrators, the rare individuals who helped some Armenians survive. It is told in poetic yet straightforward prose which is a great pleasure to read. An outstanding achievement, Adam!!

I had to read this for a Sociology of Genocide class but I sincerely loved every page. It's heartbreaking and ugly because the author writes in a way that really makes you feel like you know the main character. Reading this has me even more in shock that this genocide is still swept under the rug like it never happened.

I just read this book and the beauty of Mr. Bagdasarian's writing - oh, it's just stunning. Stunning! I love effective use of the language, the use of just a few words to convey an abundant truth, and the entire book is written this way. It does tell the truths of the Armenian genocide, and how our ancestors were brutalized by the evil attackers - but it tells it sparely, with just the facts, but in a way that conveys depths of meaning throughout.I have read at least 40 Armenian survivors' stories, and this one ranks right at the top: same song, but beautifully performed.

Once again the energy soars to full on the voltage meter in the 4th installment of Richard Paul Evans capitvating series Michael Vey 4: Hunt for Jade Dragon.Michael Vey and his friends have returned to the states. The trauma and triumph of Peru have taken their toll on all of them. Some have come back to happy reunions while others still mourn what they have lost. The group is informed about their next mission: to save the one called Jade Dragon. She holds valuable information and if it falls in the wrong hands could be globally catastrophic. The girl is an autistic savant with an incredible IQ. She is also deaf and mute which makes retrieving the information next to impossible. Or is it? The Electroclan must travel to Taiwan, and much to their dismay, have to bring along a surprising old acquaintance. Dr. Hatch and The Elgen have become more formidable than anyone could have imagined. Tensions are at all-time high as these teens face their toughest challenge yet.Kids and adults will enjoy the spark filled action in this book. It is well written and the attention to details is amazing. One of the things I really appreciate about this series is that it uses the right amount of challenging vocabulary and engaging geography to keep readers of any age riveted. The positive role models are refreshing and serve to show that anyone can be a hero by the choices they make. I totally recommend this book and the entire series. Well done RPE! Zappy Reading!!

I was going to give it 3 out of 5 stars, but then I contacted the seller about my missing package and they responded in less than an hour! That bumped it up to 3.5 stars. Then when I went to the P.O., they found the package and told me they had put it in the 'undeliverable pile' because there was only a street address on it and no P.O. Box. I then bumped the rating up to four stars, seeing as how they can't control what my Post Office did with the package once it arrived. I also am very satisfied with the quality of the product overall! I don't know if all books get this mark (second pic) but I've noticed it on many of my books.Brand new an crisp! No bent edges or folded pages! Yayyy!

I've been reading this series loyally. I loved the first two books, but I have to admit I'm getting more frustrated with each book. How many times can these kids get captured and escape? This book didn't deliver anything I'd hoped for. Given the lead from the third book, and the title of this one, I expected a lot more story surrounding the Jade Dragon, but it felt more like she was only partially thought through, and barely acknowledged, just to justify title. The entire book felt repetitious. It dragged on and on only to end with yet another cliffhanger that felt contrived to sell more books. I honestly felt cheated. I won't be preordering the next book. I will be waiting to see reviews before I decide whether to read it at all.

Thank you Richard Evans for writing these books!!! My son did not read at all the first semester of 5th grade. Once he started to read a book, he would say that it did not interest him and he would not finish it. I wondered if he would ever read again. It was frustrating. His teacher read the 1st Michael Vey book to his class of 26 students. Once that was finished my son begged me to buy the 2nd and 3rd book for him to read. I was skeptical but he read each from cover to cover in a few days. He is now on the 4th book. I panic to think what he will do when he finishes this book series. The other boys in the class have all asked him if they can borrow his books after he is finished. They continue to go from boy to boy and I wonder if I will ever see these books again!

This series had first begun as and exhilarating tale full of suspense and surprises for their readers and that same technique surely has not fallen short in this thrilling sequel of the series that caught the world by storm. An electric storm, that is. Anyone who loves suspenseful and action-filled stories that never make you want to stop reading should definitely buy this book. I know for sure that I made the right decision getting it. Be sure to read the other three books before you start reading this one, though. You won't regret it!

I love these books. Number four is not losing momentum at all. I've been reading RPE from the very beginning. He has found something very different in himself with these Michael Vey books. This is just great storytelling, great writing, great characters with morals and values. I'm so tired of moral relativism and female anti-heroes which are all the rage right now, where nothing is ever really evil and no one is ever really good. Here you will find the opposite concepts; corruption and greed balanced against sacrifice, forgiveness and redemption. I would read it to my 8-10 year old the first time through because, honestly, it's scary. There are a couple of spots where I had to put it down, and several spots that made me cry. The cliff hanger is killer and may evoke some tough emotions in kids. I can't wait to read these books to my grandkids when they are old enough. Mostly because it will give me an excuse to re-read them myself.

After reading the visible reviews, I was a bit gun shy to read this book. Then I took the time to read the "other" reviews and wondered why those two were featured. So, the story didn't end the way those readers wanted it to end. But this is a series and books and movies in series often end with cliffhangers. I can't wait to read the next one and how many more will there be in the series? Do the Elgen ever bite the dust? Does HRH Hatch ever run out of people to stomp on and destroy? Will no one ever stand up to him with finality? The next installment will answer some questions....

This is a really, really excellent book on how to get started in self-publishing erotica. The author doesn't go into a great deal of detail regarding the actual how of writing, though she does lay out a quick and easy 'format' to use for stories of 4-8,000 words, and she talks about the importance of editing, making a great cover and writing good blurbs. The book also covers the tools that the author uses to write and gather ideas, including Scrivener and Evernote, how to prep your book for Kindle (though not in massive detail) and some methods of getting a cover done for little or no cost.In my opinion, though, this book is a superb guide to how to actually attract readers, which frankly is the Holy Grail of being successful as an author. The author talks about writing to the market, identifying what niches are selling well and how to identify and use the right Amazon keywords to make sure that searches find your book. There is a really excellent section on social media marketing with a TON of Facebook groups that the author apparently uses for promotion of her book, suggestions for how to use Goodreads, Twitter and other social media. The author states that she has used 'all these groups to promote her erotica at some point in the last 4 months' which is quite a claim, because there must be over 100 Facebook groups on that list.At the same time, she claims to be making $2500 a month from her erotica sales after only a few months in the game, so quite possibly those Facebook groups are the way to go, and I'll certainly be giving it a shot myself! Those Facebook lists alone have to be worth the cover price of the book, but there's lots of other great information here that make me happy I chose to buy it. I'm giving it 5 stars without hesitation. If you're thinking about getting into the self-publishing erotica game, you need to get this book. It's that simple.

Although this is labeled as a "Beginner's Guide," I think it is quite in-depth and appropriate for both beginning and experience erotica writers. Calista really gets into the details of how to write and market erotica, including how long your stories should be, where to get inspiration, what sub-genres of erotica to write in, and so forth. Inspiring read!

This book isn't a step by step representation you would need but it does cover in a vague tense all of the avenues you would need to consider when writing in this genre. In other words, the author delivers her message in opinion form. I did find some very useful information that is why I gave it 4 stars. If the author would have gone into a bit more detail with more examples or links and less opinion this would be a great book.

I thought there would be some concrete information, but what it is is a book written by someone who only started writing erotica five months before writing this book who is, more or less, telling the reader what she's learning while trying to figure it out. Personally, I'd rather read a book on this topic by someone who has been in the field long enough to have more experience than the five months she states. Longer term trends than five months of writing will allow is much more important. This is like taking marriage advice rom someone who has been dating someone for a few months. I've ready many, many books on writing in general as well as erotica, and this is the least useful. Perhaps someone who hasn't read much about it yet might find this useful, but if you have, I suggest a hard pass. Honestly, I find it rather off-putting when a notice claims authority. Wait a year, at least, before holding yourself up as an authority.I rarely return books, but this one went back. I wouldn't have bought a book about a topic by someone with just five months of writing experience. If I'd known the very short length of time she's been writing, I would have expected a book that is barely a surface scratch on the topic instead of expecting a book by someone with enough experience to no longer be a true novice.

Great little book! I like that she says more than, "Hey to get your book out there you need to network...blah, blah, blah....with no information." Ms. Foxton actually had direction in her book. This book has it all...you need to network...and here is how to do it...you need to look up authors...and here is where you look...and much more. AWESOME!! I think Ms. Foxton's book would be a good read for anyone trying to publish any genre. Well done! It is a start...other authors talk and talk and never say anything...but this book has a few gems. I would recommend this book. :)

Excellent book on the subject. The marketing section is particularly useful. All in all a great book for self publishing whether you write Erotica or not. I do have to add however, that this book doesn't show you much in the way of how to write. The author does say this in the very beginning so it's not as if this is a surprise. All in all I'm very pleased with this book and found the material informative, practical and helpful.

I've read a few other guides for beginners, but this one is definitely the most complete and honest. A lot of other books are filled with crappy, obvious advice. This one, however, offers A TON of advice that many people might not be aware of, and fully embraces the idea of writing as a business; it doesn't bully the reader for wanting to make a few bucks out of writing, like some other books on the topic.

The book gave me a honest view of what writting erotica was about. Its full of great tips, on the foundation of the genre. I really enjoyed reading. And I I'm look forward to getting my "dirty thirty" out there in front or readers. All in all no complaints on this book. Good read for anyone trying to get in the business.
