I've taught both software and logic design courses. In the software world, coding style is a central part of the curriculum and grading policy - more than getting the answer right, it's about getting the answer well. I see that far less in the VHDL/Verilog world, at least in academia. That leaves students poorly prepared for industrial logic design practice and for design efforts much larger than a homework assignment. This book fills a sorely felt need.I recommend this to two audiences. Many of the concepts and practices in this book lie beyond what a beginning student could grasp; it's not for someone struggling with notions of clocked logic and state machines. I do recommend it, however, to advanced students and to industrial logic designers struggling with multi-person projects, re-usability, engineers fresh out of school, and other issues of scale. Although individual design elements might be (and often should be) small, problematic practices at the lower levels propagate and interact as components are assembled into larger structures. The best time to weed them out is the earliest time. Second, I recommend this to anyone teaching introductory courses. They're positioned to introduce good style, legibility, and safe design practices from the first assignments on, just as in the software world. Even if many of the practices recommended here will be familiar - and they will to anyone who's seen similar guides for software design - seeing them gathered and organized into a coherent body of practice can be very helpful. Some practices will seem excessive for small projects, and instructors will choose what matters at each level. Still, it will be helpful to give students, especially in the higher levels, some idea of what they'll be expected to know once they leave school.It's hard to find fault with these recommendations. I did find a few points of emphasis where opinions might differ, however. Real-world logic design commonly uses component libraries, including things like RAMs, FIFOs, arithmetic elements, transceivers, PLLs, and lots of other elements hardened into FPGA fabric or ASIC design flows. Also, tools for specific logic fabrics generally include idiosyncratic (and non-portable) pragmas for guiding synthesis. Wherever possible, designers should draw on such technology-specific utilities instead of rolling their own. If portability across technologies or tool flows becomes an issue, good modular design can help isolate such technology specifics and make them easy to swap out. Jasinski also discusses synthesizable vs non-synthesizable constructs, a concept I find very important. My own preference, in the interest of clarity, is to emphasize the distinction early on, and to keep non-synthesizable constructs out of 'payload' logic entirely. Of course, this brings up the gray area of compile-time constant expressions. This text mentions them briefly, though not by that name, but I feel that they deserve a longer, more rigorous discussion that demonstrates creative ways they can be used. Perhaps integer division or a floating-point sine function can not be synthesized directly. Still, designers can safely use such functions to generate fixed-point constants that can be synthesized.This could pair well with its kin from the software world. Although they'd overlap in many areas, software design guides offer suggestions not mentioned here. For example, this book points out that VHDL supports operator and function overloading. I did not see mentions of the hazards of overloading, however. A two-parameter function can do whatever your imagination can dream up. But, if you overload the binary '+' operator with any function other than addition of some kind, or if you endow it with wild side effects, you're well on your way to unmaintainable and unusable code, no matter what language it's in. Minor points aside, I recommend this highly to architects developing style guides and to educators (including self-educators) at every level.-- wiredweird

This is absolutely the best VHDL book that I have ever encountered.It not only covers the details of VHDL, but the chapters on Design and Architecture, Design Challenges, and Design Principles discuss concepts geared more towards a software viewpoint. Being more familiar with hardware, the concepts presented in the above chapters were eye opening and fascinating to me.I also found the section on Practical Coding Recommendations eye openers. I will certainly incorporate the ideas presented in the book in all of my future work with VHLD.If you are a beginner with VHLD, I would recommend focusing on parts II through IV, which talk more about the details of the language of VHDL. Once you have a good feel for the VHDL language and have worked on a few projects, the other sections will be easier to digest.I highly recommend this book! I'd give it 10 stars if I could!

This is my first review but this book really deserves more credit.It is a modern book for VHDL and HDL development integrated with new knowledge from the software development front. I believe this book will spark a new wave of ideas for years to come and deliver to the HDL front what software went through.This book is equally important and as good as a Doulos Golden Reference.

Bought this for my grandson because I always reward him for doing good in school. He just love it.

My young son loves superhero stories, so we have amassed quite a collection of superhero literature geared toward younger audiences. I have to say that the Marvel books we have purchased have been a disappointment. There are quite a bit of typos, not only in this book but in at least two others in the series we have purchased (examples include the use of "wont" instead of "won't" and random punctuation errors such as commas inserted where they shouldn't be). In my opinion, DC Comics' I Can Read, Step Into Reading, Super Friends, Batman Classic, Superman Classic, and Justice League offerings are far superior in both content and quality. Marvel needs to step up its game in this department.

Although DC comics makes for good toilet paper. Anyway good story loved the presentation. My kids love it too thank you

Story kept my son's attention and was at the right level of complexity for a pre-schooler. Nicely illustrated. Fun book.

I've been aware of this Paulist Press title for many years, but had expected a dry, academic study... that would chafe at my own preference for texts that transmit a living, palpable baraka (spiritual magnetism), therefore it took a few decades to get around to finally ordering a copy. Now, I wish I hadn't waited so long. The book is deep, and filled with beauty. As well, both the translation and scholarship are well up to the high standards one would expect from any of the books in this famous Paulist Press series (Classics of Western Spirituality).Fakhruddin Iraqi: Divine Flashes (Classics of Western Spirituality)

This ancient text, from a follower in the Sufi school of Ibn-Arabi, is a wonderfully done combination of translation and text. The history of this master, with the major concepts he is working in, was fascinating, though it takes study. This sets the stage for the flashes themselves, which are further explained, adding depth, in a later commentary section. The poetry may not appeal to those who want the accessibility and lyric beauty of Rumi; but they are quite beautiful and moving. I find reading The Divine Flashes an excellent way to enter meditation.

Purchased this to add to my Classics of Western Spirituality collection. When I get around to reading it, probably years from now, I'll probably review it then.

Fakhruddin `Iraqi (1213-1289) was already in his time a famous Sufi poet-gnostic, who was particularly gifted in expressing the mysteries of Union in the language of love. He lived during the thirteenth century at the peak of the revival of Islamic spirituality, and was contemporary with such figures as Ibn `Arabi, Jalaluddin Rumi and Shams Tabrizi, Sadruddin Qunawi, Najmuddin Kubra, and Kermani.`Iraqi may be considered as one of the "fideli d'Amore" of Persian Sufism, gnostics who considered love as the foundation of transcendent awareness, such as Mansur al-Hallaj, Ahmad Ghazzali, `Ayn al-Qodhat Hamdhani, Ruzbihan Baqli, and Shihabuddin Suhrawardi."Divine Flashes" is his prose masterpiece, in which he re-wrote, in the language of love, the "Fusus al-Hikam" (lit. "The Seals of the Wisdoms") of Ibn al-`Arabi. Each "Flash" of `Iraqi corresponds with a "Seal of Wisdom" of Ibn al-`Arabi. After his death, `Iraqi was buried, at his request, beside the tomb of Ibn al-`Arabi in Damascus.Through the "Lama'at" (Divine Flashes), the theoshophy of Ibn al-`Arabi was recreated and integrated into the Persion poetic tradition, and its influence on later poets cannot be overestimated.Moreover, according to Sadruddin Qunawi, spiritual heir and stepson of Ibn al-`Arabi, " `Iraqi, you have published the secret of men's words. The "Lama'at" is in truth the pith of the "Fusus"!"I like this text very much, although I had to struggle with this book. I think that the layout could be a little better. This book of Divine Flashes confirmed to me the importance as I have always felt that Love plays in one's life in the divine sense before entering the Path of Light and how absolutely necessary it is in one's development during the process of inner change and growth. Iraqi shows that unlike many of our christian teachings, an intermidiary is not necessary to approach God. This is a great book for one who has had a number of years already on the Path. If you are Christian it may seem very incorrect in it's teachings; so wait a while and then come back to it. Great book - well worth the investment - and time to read it.

This was a terrific book which I enjoyed a lot. It's well written, concise and filled with good "car-guy" advice.I've always enjoyed reading about cars and have wide-ranging tastes, so this book filled the bill in many ways. It's in my "car-guy" room on the bookshelf with many other books, but it's a good one that I'll keep until my kids sell it at my estate sale some day (not to soon, I hope).Rob's a good writer and the photos are also quite excellent.

This is a well written guide to collector cars that "real people" can afford. You wont find any information on Bugattis in here, but you will find some interesting and fun facts about cars that you might have owned in the past or are thinking of buying. I bought 2 copies at Amazon and gave one to a friend -- he has read it from cover to cover as well. I know Rob Sass - he writes for SCM as well as Hagerty's magazine and the New York Times automobile section. His stories are full of humor as well as personal tales of the many cars he has owned, driven and restored. This would make a great gift for an aspiring gearhead or a dyed in the wool car guy.

This book has a lot of good information and is also entertaining.

If you're constantly dragging home project cars like me this is a great book to help you know what you're getting into before you drag said project home. Mostly covers import sports cars and hardly any domestic stuff though.

What a great book about old cars. It makes it less daunting to buy and use an old car. Now I just need to escape Manhattan. Does Mr. Sass have a book for that?

I had never even heard of this book, and then I saw it on the shelf at Barnes and Noble. I have been restoring old cars, starting with my Grandfathers '67 Dodge, and that led into Hemmings Classic Cars, Sports & Exotics and Muscle Machines, and then other cars as well. This book is a must have for those interested in foreign sports cars, but has a good section titled American Iron as well. The photos are great color & deatil, and the mix of advice and personal experience is like having a bunch of the Illustrated Buyers Guides (do they still make those? Old ones are on Amazon used, but I havent seen any new ones in a long time) rolled into one book. I will keep this book permanently. Cant recommend it highly enough.

Classic cars aren't just for rich folk--that's the gospel according to Sass. The author proves his point again and again in this collection of amusing adventures buying and selling great old cars. To wit--he put together a collection of three very sporty examples (a Lancia, a Datsun 240Z, and a Volvo P1800) for less than $9000...all rust free, all in drivable condtion.This is a great handbook for anyone new to the hobby, but any gearhead will find it an enjoyable and enlightening read. But be forewarned... readers may find themselves with a new addiction to Craigslist.

This book is very interesting, but it is not really what it says on the cover. There are various habits presented in it that would certainly help with losing weight, but they are not "quick" and they are not targeted on the "belly fat". Habits by definition can't be quick, it takes time to build habits. But that aside, they make sense and they are helpful, although some of them are too obvious (skip dessert, stay hydrated – fascinating, never heard of it!)Everyone would benefit from implementing these habits into his/her life, but that is not so easy and this book can only help as a guide. Most of the work still depends on the person. But it is a good book and it has value. Recommended.

Much of the information provided by this book is not based on science. For example, "Your body needs fuel in the morning. If you don't give it fuel it goes into starvation mode". I'd suggest the author research the action of cortisol and in particular 'the dawn phenomena'. Also, the author suggests that eating 6 times a day is healthier than eating less often. This is simply not true. The author needs to research AMPK vs mTOR to realize that she parroting unsubstantiated garbage. I you don 't believe me, read a book on physiology, focusing on the endocrine system. Overall, zero stars. Disclaimer - I received this Kindle edition for free, and I still think I paid too much.

I enjoyed this short read. Although I work out regularly, practice many of the stress reduction techniques mentioned, and work at living heathily, I found myself taking notes of many things mentioned that I need a firmer commitment on. Very clear and well written and organized as well. Thank you!

This book is really amazing. Linda does a wonderful job of giving tons of great tips that make losing weight super simple. It really does all come down to habits. Some of these are quite clever like drinking green tea and swapping foods that you normally eat for ones that are healthier. Eating breakfast is also something I neglect to do, but can see how it really would speed up your metabolism. With 51 tips, you really get your money's worth from this book. The point is that you don't have to have all of the tips in order to make progress. By combining and mixing and matching tips together there is something here for everyone!

It is worth a read. This book shows us good tips to make a habit. We all know there are things to cut when we want to have that good shape, healthy body. However, we keep on forgetting to follow the simple steps. It is good that I get to read this kind of book as I am being reminded that I need to stop drinking soda and stop eating junk foods, as well as drink lots of water. This is worth sharing to others, too!

I love the way the author talks to you (the reader) about how to get rid of belly fat and goes on to tell you the reasons why. She doesn't talk at you like a lot of people do when discussing this topic. The book has tons of good information included. A lot of what the author states in the book makes a lot of sense. I am looking forward to trying her advice and see what happens. I recommend this book for anyone looking to be healthier.

Some seem like common sense, however seeing it in writing makes it a bit more understandable. This is a great book for anyone interested in getting a head start on some simple tips.

The US has also been the dominant power in Asia since 1945. It has fought in Korea and Vietnam and protected Taiwan, Japan, Philippines, and the sea lanes in the region. When President Xi became China’s leader in 2012, he announced that his aim was to make China great again. This has meant a more assertive China. The book is a little disappointing because it points out that both countries are on a collision course but it does not present any good options for the US.Graham Allison is a professor at Harvard. He reviews history and observes that when a new superpower emerges the reigning hegemonic power feels threatened and often (but not always) decides to crush the upstart before it gets too powerful. Often this results in a catastrophic war. Allison calls this the “Thucydides trap” after the ancient Greek historian. He starts with the Sparta-Athens war (431 BC - 404 BC). Sparta decided that it had to defeat Athens before it became too powerful. Thucydides tells us that war between the cities was more or less inevitable. Allison picks sixteen similar examples of great power conflicts over the last 500 years, only four ended peacefully.Allison describes the behavior of the US after it became the world’s leading economic power in the 1890s. This sets a worrying precedent should the Chinese choose to follow our example. America started to apply the Monroe Doctrine and regarded the Western Hemisphere as its backyard. Teddy Roosevelt made it clear to the Europeans that the US would not tolerate interference in the Americas and it would fight to protect its interests. The US threatened Britain and Germany with war. Fortunately, the Europeans backed down. China now regards the South China Sea as its backyard and has started to flex its muscles. Xi talks of “Asia for the Asians” and wants the US to withdraw its military from the region. It is not clear what happens next if we try and maintain the current status quo. Foreign policy experts such as Ian Bremmer and Robert Kaplan have advised appeasement and suggested that we should terminate our obligations to Taiwan and Japan.John Mearsheimer is a history professor at the University of Chicago and he has also written about China and America. Mearsheimer believes that once countries become economically dominant they seek to dominate their region militarily. He calls this “offensive realism.” The neo-cons who worked for the first President Bush wanted the US to become a global hegemon and they created the Wolfowitz Doctrine, which Allison does not mention. The doctrine wanted to prevent any new rising power becoming a rival as powerful as the Soviet Union. This is the "Thucydides Trap" as foreign policy. Mearsheimer predicts that China will attempt to dominate Asia so that conflict with the US is probably inevitable. This is the crucial foreign policy problem of our age, what happens in Syria is irrelevant by comparison. Allison believes that both America and China assume that they are special and inherently superior to other nations. They expect other countries to follow their lead and be submissive. This could present problems in Asia for the US. China has made it clear it does not want be part of a world order dominated by the US and its liberal democratic values. Like the US, it wants to lead.Allison believes that there will soon come a time when the US would probably lose a military confrontation in the South China Sea. The Chinese have developed land based missiles which could sink America’s carriers if they get too close to the Chinese mainland. Does that mean we should respond like Britain in the early part of the 20th century and back-off? What would that mean for Taiwan, Japan and South Korea? Allison does not offer any real answers.Some of Allison’s chosen historical lessons were not particularly relevant to the coming conflict with China and I often disagreed with his analysis. Allison describes WW1 primarily as a struggle between Britain and Germany. Germany’s decision to go to war in 1914 was mainly about its rivalry with Russia and maintaining hegemony over the European mainland, something Britain never had any interest in. Germany was concerned about protecting its backyard, which meant its long border with Russia. Moltke, the head of the German army, wanted to crush Russia before it was too late. The Tsar had a huge army and the country was rapidly industrializing. Russia had always been an expansionist power. A modern Russian army would have been a real threat to Germany.Allison's list of key players in 1914 (e.g., Churchill, Edward VII, Bethmann Hollweg, and the Kaiser) is also wide of the mark. He focuses on Churchill, who was Britain’s navy secretary at the time. On the British side, Sir Edward Grey (Foreign Secretary) and David Lloyd George ultimately called the shots. Grey hated the Germans and wanted to help France. Lloyd George became prime minister in 1916 and his support was needed before war was declared. The German chancellor (Bethmann Hollweg) did not control the army or foreign policy. Moltke sidelined the Kaiser. The objective of the German army's Schlieffen Plan was to remove the Russian threat. The German army believed they could defeat the French easily, as they had in 1871, and they did not worry about Britain’s tiny army. Britain entered the war only because Germany invaded Belgium.Overall, the book is easy to read and very informative. What Allison makes clear is that we don't have any good options. By 1905, Britain had no economic interests in the Western Hemisphere that it was prepared to fight over, apart from Canada. It may be different for the US in Asia. It we choose to withdraw from Asia, it would raise fundamental questions about the global role of the US. We would no longer need to spend $600 billion annually on defense. This is a difficult and risky call for the US. We need a book which can hopefully explain the pros and cons of the various options.

I wondered if this book might be a hackneyed view of China with a sensationalized scenario of improbable war. However, Author Graham Allison quickly back-peddles away from the provocative title:=====The possibility that the United States and China could find themselves at war appears as unlikely as it would be unwise.=====So much for THAT title! The title was written to sell books, of course, and not to represent the true content of the book.Allison primarily frames the USA vs. China rivalry in the well-known paradigm of superpower rivalries going back to Athens vs. Sparta, Britain vs. {every European Empire + Russia + Japan + USA}, and finally the USA vs. the Soviet Union.These stories are well-known. However, Allison tells them in interesting ways. For example, he explains that Germany’s desire to acquire much of the world dates from the late 1800s. Hitler did not originate the idea, but rather put it into action by attempting to wipe out the Soviet Union and repopulate it with Germans. That’s not relevant to China, but it is interesting history in its own right.He also tells the interesting story of how the USA’s rise rattled Great Britain and its Canadian Dominion. Fortunately, we “upstart Yankees” and the imperious Brits always compromised before armed conflict resulted --- the most severe incident being the Venezuela crisis of the 1890s when the USA accused Britain of violating the Monroe Doctrine by trying to re-colonize part of Venezuela’s territory. Fortunately, Britain took the long view that maintaining its investments in the USA, plus having us as allies against anticipated future aggression from Germany, was far more important than inciting us to war over Venezuela.Britain backed down, knowing that Venezuela was a prestige issue for the USA that we could not back down from. The implication is that we should not allow ourselves to be drawn into war with China over petty incidents that are vital to China’s prestige, but not to ours.Allison explains that China is fundamentally a peaceable country that regards war as the last resort of barbarians. The Chinese tradition is to prevail economically, by attaining dominance in trade. Nevertheless, we did fight the Chinese during the Korean War when they massively intervened to keep our armies away from the Chinese border. The Chinese did not fear our nuclear weapons, nor did they fear those of the Soviet Union when they provoked the Sino-Soviet Border War of 1969. Allison tells the interesting story of how Soviet Chairman Brezhnev asked our President Nixon to join him in a preemptive nuclear attack on China. Nixon declined of course, and then succeeded in establishing détente with China as well as the USSR.The USA and China have historically been in alliance against other expansionist powers, especially during WWII when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor after we demanded that the Japanese withdraw from their brutal conquest of China. Nevertheless, the possibility of war between the USA and China cannot be ignored. It happened in Korea and could happen again if relations are not carefully managed. After all, some of history's bloodiest wars, including WWI, the Chinese intervention in Korea, and our own Civil War were considered impossible until the day they ignited.Allison outlines the scenarios of possible USA / China war: a conflict in the high seas around China that China claims as sovereign territory; a conflict over the trade imbalance; a declaration of independence by Taiwan; and of course a renewal of the conflict in Korea that could accidentally involve both the USA and China in a war neither wants.The book explained to me why President Trump appears to be proceeding very cautiously (more cautiously than I would prefer) in asking the Chinese to restrain their trade imbalance with us, and in helping us defuse the nuclear ambitions of North Korea. I was educated to the subtleties of our relations with China that I had not been previously aware of.Like many Americans, I approached this book with both affection for China’s people, culture, and history. I have invested profitably in Chinese stocks, but have also seen how severe trade deficits with China severely hurts the USA and cost millions of Americans their jobs.The book confirms my belief that if we do not constrain our trade with China, we are destined to be destroyed as a major economic power. I travel abroad, and have seen how China copies American products, then pushes our American companies out of foreign markets and even our own domestic market. If the trend is not stopped, China will own the USA in 50 years or less. They will conquer us by combining the Chinese government and Chinese business into a unified, irresistible force that steals American technologies and repackages them as Chinese-made products sold around the world; while forbidding American companies to do business in China. Allison makes no bones about China’s intentions:=====China is ready to use the carrots and sticks of its economic power— buying, selling, sanctioning, investing, bribing, and stealing as needed until they fall into line....China enjoys such superiority in its balance of economic power that many other states have no realistic option but to comply with its wishes, even when the international system is on their side....The fact is that China’s economic network is spreading across the globe, altering the international balance of power in a way that causes even longtime US allies in Asia to tilt from the US toward China=====I thus learned more than I expected from the book. It is comprehensive in providing a broad perspective of all our current issues with China. Allison explains these issues objectively, and seems to have no hidden agendas to advocate for. I am rating this book four stars instead of five, only because the “Sparta vs. Athens” theme is long-winded and used to pad the book a bit more than necessary.I would also recommend another book as a companion to this one, that portrays the USA / China relationship in more historical depth, and with a more positive spin: THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY (the USA is called "the beautiful country" by Chinese) AND THE MIDDLE KINGDOM (China) BY John Pomfret. That book explains the past history of our relations with China. This book by Graham Allison has a more immediate impact of explaining our relations with China as a current and future event that may have an unhappy outcome if care is not taken on both sides.These two books together provide a thorough briefing on the opportunities, challenges, plus the threat of trade war or armed conflict with China. My takeaway from both is: “We can manage our relations to China constructively so as to have a fascinating and prosperous future of mutual benefit to us ad all humanity; but only so long as we are very careful not to disrespect each other, underestimate each other, or do something stupid that will provoke a war, that does not need to be fought.”Of course that idea is self-evident, but the books delve into the specific details of policy on HOW the vision of cordial relations and mutual prosperity between the USA and China can be achieved by both nations. Obviously, this will be one of the top two or three issues that shape our destiny, and the world’s, during the 21st Century.
