While I have been a fan of Mercedes' designs from her first submission to Interweave Knits years ago. I was hesitant to purchase this book for two reasons.First because Brioche knitting requires a different set of technical skills than the standard for most knitting styles - I have had difficulty in the past with Brioche patterns that simply assumed the knitter could figure out all of the required increases and decreases without assistance. This book presents all of the technical requirements with both excellent illustrations and with clear written explanations. The patterns are laid out progressively from simple to most complex and the new information is presented with each stage as it is needed. This further clarifies the process because you can compare the simpler designs with the more complex ones to ground yourself in what you are being asked to do. All of the sample sweaters use fairly plain yarns and are clearly photographed from front and back with no arty depth of field or random props or backgrounds obscuring the details from sight. The result is a bit Retro in effect but makes the book infinitely more usable than any number of books currently on the market. Mercedes is working from the point of view that you purchased the book to knit the projects and gives you every support needed to do that successfully.My second reservation was that I live in a warm climate and rarely wear sweaters. In this respect the book hits it with full value there are 2 short sleeve blouse/sweaters, a tank top and two cardigans. Basic adjustments to fiber choices and I'm good to go. In addition all of the "Men's" sweaters are designs likely to be worn by actual men, and there are enough excellent accessories to take care of all of my holiday knitting.Kudos to the publisher for supporting a topic that is considered intermediate and congratulations to the designer for authoring such a useful and beautifully produced book. I purchased the Kindle version and am more than happy with it's layout and usability - I like this book enough that I will also purchase the hard copy for my permanent library.

BRIOCHE CHIC is an excellent reference book on brioche knitting that includes an uneven collection of 22 garment designs. There are two methods of brioche knitting: (1) the simple alternating "knit one in the row below" method that produces the well-known, stretchy "fisherman's rib"; and (2) the more complicated alternating "slipped stitch with yarnover" method that the book relies on.I very much like the designer's explanation of why a knitter might want to use brioche knitting: "The depth of texture and stunning color effects made possible through brioche's stitch manipulation make these pieces worth the time. In colorwork, handling two colors of yarn per row can be easier, since you are working each color one at a time before returning to the beginning to work the second color, much like mosaic knitting. With cables, colorwork, and other texture patterns, the work is often reversible . . . ."Most of the garment designs are rather plain, but allow knitters to practice the brioche knitting techniques. Most patterns are written for multiple sizes, and call for worsted, DK, or sportweight yarn (and medium-size needles appropriate to the yarns and brioche knitting structure). There are patterns for brioche-knit shawls, hats, mittens, scarves, and sweaters.A few designs really stand out for me, as garments that I like a lot, and would enjoy knitting. These are the Lattice-Edged Cardigan (an open-front dolman cardigan with directionally knit garter stitch body and wavy brioche stitch cables at the cuffs and fronts that also form a shawl collar); the Cowl-Neck Pullover (the dolman pullover with flat-shaped brioche cables shown in the book cover photo); and the Smocked Blouse (a cap-sleeve stockinette tee with brioche cables along the scoop neckline which ultimately join up with a simple smocking stitch across the front to make a textural bib).The greatest weakness of this book is the one page that explains how to knit the three basic brioche stitches (slip one, yarnover; brioche knit; brioche purl) that are used in the brioche knitting method used in the book (see the page titled "The Structure of Brioche"). A knitter must read the written explanations carefully, and also study the accompanying line drawings closely, in order to fully understand this brioche method. But as long as a knitter has the skills to reproduce the drawings on her/his own needles, then she/he should be able to knit everything in the book. Brioche knitting isn't particularly difficult, but it's probably best attempted by those with at least intermediate knitting skills.As a knitter's bookshelf reference, there are step-by-step instructions, with accompanying line drawings and blown-up photos of finished swatches, for each of the following:---Basic brioche cast-ons and bind-offs (long-tail; Italian tubular; alternate cable; two standard bind-offs; tubular; k2tog bind-off)---Brioche increases and decreases for shaping (two basic increases; five basic decreases; two advanced decreases)---Brioche charting for one-color and two-color brioche, in rounds and in rows---Brioche cables (traditional twisted cables; flat-shaped cables)---Two-color brioche cast-ons and bind-offs---Two-color brioche stitch patterns (brioche rib, brioche stockinette)---Other brioche methods (fisherman's rib; half fisherman's rib; garter brioche stitch; knit-one-below method for two-color brioche stripe)

Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark takes the mystery out of a new and somewhat challenging knitting technique. It's a pleasure to plumb her brain (that sounds awful, but it's the only way I can express it after only one cup of coffee). I have been knitting on and off for over 50 years and it is never too late for an old dog to learn new tricks. This book does it beautifully and then takes it to the next level of creative and interesting. Well worth the purchase price. It is something you will keep on your bookshelf for years to come as a handy reference.

I am not new to knitting, indeed I have mastered several different styles over the years, but I had never tried Brioche. I wanted a book that was clear in its instruction and offered some small projects, which this book does. Although there are books with photo step by step instructions, the drawings in this book convey meaning clearly and I like the overall presentation.

Twenty two projects of fun, wearable, brioche knits! Clear instructions guide you through your first basic brioche scarf (knit flat) and first basic brioche cowl (knit in the round), and quickly get you to some hybrid knit & brioche projects (like the men's shawl collar pullover p.39 and the women's leaf-motif raglan top p.75). Then it's off to cables that will blow your mind and colorwork that really shows off the raised brioche stitch against dark contrasting colors.I'm only an intermediate knitter, but every project has charts and careful notes that make me feel that I could tackle pretty much anything in here...starting with the cute diamond-pane camisole (p.91) that begs to be worn to a Renaissance Faire.Bravo, Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark!

I love this style of presenting this information. My only negative thought is that the book evolves around providers and patients. It tends to leave 80% of the work force in the shadows. This is a comprehensive culture change for the health organization whose target is 100 percent patient, physician, and employee satisfaction. I am familiar with the concepts and processes promoted by Mr. Studer. They work.I was given the book at my current facility as part of manager orientation. I read it and thought my team of supervisors could benefit as well; if for nothing more that to know why I focus as I do. The book is great. Mr. Studer takes a component approach to defining the pursuit of excellence. An analagy would be that you can't leave out the transmission when you build a car....all components work together and must be present.I recommend the book as a guide toward excellence. It shows you what is possible when you do the right things. One thing not in the book is the depth of how much you have to do. In reality, however, excellence takes real commitment and real time. If you are looking for step-by-step instructions, you will have to contact the Studer Group. You will be glad you did.

About the Author

Excellent book. Very detailed and beautiful photography. The authors have written with sympathy, sound knowledge and a strong sense of Yemen's long history. The information is specific: for example, a picture is not captioned "fish market" but "yellowfin tuna" in the specific market. This specificity and local knowledge is displayed throughout the book. It is a shame that such a well-written book seems to be ignored in reviews.

I enjoyed this story. Did not like Taylor’s mother’s narrow minded attitude towards her and Riley. The two women had such chemistry from the start. Looking forward to more stories by this author.

I couldn't get through the book, the reviews made me want to like it but I can't read books written in the 3rd person. It feels like the book is being narrated rather than unfolding before my eyes. This review is just for others like me so they won't be blind sided or disappointed when they buy the book.

This is such a good book... Looking forward to reading more from you in the future

This is a kindleUnlimited read that i did enjoy but felt unfullfilled as it progressed. So this story is about Taylor (ER doc) and Riley (police detective). Both characters are 30 years of age and apparently the best in their field. They first set eyes on each other at park, no words exchanged , just glances. They meet again at the hospital after a sting goes bad. There seems to be a hige lack of detail in the 3 or 4 months when the two first meet and the ending. For instance, who is Stella and what happened between her and Taylor? Rachel and Simon are together just as long and they are never really mentioned in the book, interact with the main couple, or really anything yet play a mojor role. Taylor and Riley's work lives are very important not only to the characters but to the story and yet they are downplayed to the point of nonexsistant in the story progression until the end. I feel like I'm rambling but these are little things that could have helped make the story better. Oh, and don't get me started on the parents and holy 180 turn around of the dad that sadly is really unbelievable even for me.Regardless, im a sucker for cops and docs books so ill continue to read this series.

My favorite books are mystery and romance mixed in a good story line and the characters are great. I gave it four stars because I wanted to know more about the other lead character.But I enjoyed this book.

I enjoyed reading this story. There were a couple places that were told in third person that seemed a bit out of place but overall the story was good.

As usual not one boring moment in your novel. It was very emotional and I love the action. Will definitely recommend it to my friends.

I'm a big fan of Peter Jackson, and I've probably watched the behind the scenes appendices of the LOTR, The Hobbit and King Kong more often that I've watched the actual movies. It's made me wish I were a lot younger so I could go to New Zealand and try and get a job in the movies down there. Given that, it was nice to see that I could still learn some new things from this book. However, I found the tone of the writing annoying. The author obviously thinks Peter Jackson is a genius, which is fine, but often this book comes across as a hagiography. Everything is filtered through this lens of PJ unable to do wrong, every idea, every contribution made by others, every single conceivable positive development is traced back to PJ being unerring and a complete monumental visionary. Even mistakes are twisted to be part of some greater overall genius plan. There is also a curious part involving the Hobbit where Jackson states that it was his idea to make it into three movies, but only recently it was also reported that he did NOT want to make three, but was pressured by the studio, leaving him with no time to adequately prepare for them leading to a lot of problems. That's all pretty much glossed over in this book. The author also injects himself far too often. He was apparently invited down the NZ several times during the production. This is fine, but I feel the book would be better served if it weren't done in such a biased manner. I would use the J.W. Rinzler "Making of Star Wars" books as an example of something like this but done much better. Using photos and materials from Lucasfilm's archives instead of photos of the author trying on props. A decent book, not a ton of new info if you've watched the behind the scenes material (something that I think PJ actually does do better than any other filmmaker) but worth a read. Maybe someday someone will put out a more objective telling of these stories.

This is a great book, but he really screwed up Luke Evan's name, and didn't mention Lee Pace or Thranduil at all! I loved all the in-depth stuff about the making of the Lord of the Rings, but he scurries through the making of the Hobbit and he makes it plain he doesn't think much of the second trilogy, which disappoints me.He also screwed up the name of the actor playing Bard - it's "Luke Evans," NOT Lee Evans!

I first read the LOTR books in the seventies and loved them. I personally feel that the movies are actually better than the books, and thus really enjoyed reading this in depth behind the scenes account of all that went into those films. They remain my favorites and I encourage anyone interested to go to New Zealand as I did, and experience that wonderful country for yourselves (I didn't go to hobbiton, etc, while there, just enjoyed the people and the scenery).If you really loved the films (and I rank them amongst the best films ever made), you will thoroughly enjoy this book, (which delves into everything from it's difficult beginnings, choosing the characters and locations, etc. )

I loved this book. The author does a fantastic job of taking you through the process of creating these monumental movies right along with Jackson and the crew. Highly recommended.

First third to nearly halfway of this book gives in depth detail that, though informative, could have been slimmed down considerably. It does give a lot of interesting detail regarding the actors, their individual efforts in achieving their performances, and also affirms the amazing talents of Peter Jackson.

If you love The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. However, I was amazed at the number of incomplete sentences and other grammatical errors in the book and that is why I gave it four stars instead of five. I would not expect a long-established publishing house like HarperCollins to do such a poor job of editing.

Tolkien fan - I was surprised to find this book has as many pages as my LOTR book. I'm not too far into it yet but I'm enjoying reading it.

I can't imagine so such a young person, in this case, Clea Koff could professionnally embrace and thrive on a "unglamorous" forensic anthopologist career. Her descriptions, "saw-off", brushing...of the human bones through decomposed bodies to obtain evidence, to convey to authorities the alleged perpetrators showed me how much love she has for the human kind in general and for the families'survivors in particular. Clea, though encountered a handful of all kinds of "difficulties" with her work sites, her colleagues and certainly with herself, came out on top achieving her goals. Sacrificing herself by getting out of her comfort zone, the USA, at 23 years of age to seek justice for the defenseless and to bring hope to all of us that even the dead deserve a commanding voice. "Truth does not bring back the death. Truth allows their voices to be heard."

Though this was published in 2004, this memoir looks back at Koff's work as a budding forensic anthropologist going out on her first major assignments in the mid to late 90s (the last bit of the book ends around 2000) and how these first jobs affected and molded her not only professionally, but as a person. I personally found this memoir fascinating. Not only is the work she does grim but interesting, but Koff herself comes from a unique background -- born in England, Koff comes from an American father with Polish-Russian heritage and an English-raised Tansanian mother (with 1/2 her family being from Uganda). As Koff puts it, "instead of national identity, we had strong family identity." This background influences Koff some emotionally when she takes her first job working for the UN to investigate mass graves of victims of the genocide in Rwanda. She quickly learns that many of the victims came from multiple backgrounds within one family tree and were often killed for it during the months of the genocide.Koff first visits the mass graves in Rwanda in 1994, and again in 1996. Through her investigations and information that became available in the months and years after the genocide, it's learned that in less than four months, 800,000 people were murdered, most by blunt force trauma. In Kibuye (just one county in Rwanda) alone, 250,000 were killed in just three months, and over 100,000 children were left orphaned. IN MONTHS. One thing that Koff says she quickly picks up on and something she is really moved by is the clearly indomitable spirit of the people of Rwanda. Despite these horrors these families had to survive, she still found a community full of warm and friendly people who (maybe not always, but oftentimes) welcomed her into their homes and their lives. This maybe plays a part in her experiencing what she describes as occupational "double vision" -- where her professional distance with a skeleton was temporarily lost and she would get a strong vision of what the person might have been like / looked like as a living, breathing human being. As you might imagine, this can make your work extraordinarily difficult when processing mass graves every day if this happens multiple times a day, trying to document that many remains!The memoir goes on to also share her experiences working in mass graves (victims of war crimes) in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. The book is divided into sections by country and the beginning of each section includes a paragraph & map of the area briefly explaining the political situation at the time that led to the mass graves she ends up excavating. I thought this was a helpful touch for those who either don't remember all the historical facts of the time or have yet to learn them.It's here that she illustrates cracks in the UN's systems of protection for their workers out in the field: she shares a story of how a security team was sent out in an armoured Land Rover that could withstand bullets but didn't come with doors that lock!The accounts of her work in Bosnia I found especially saddening. Koff discusses how she is struck by the tragedy that bodies were being identified by family members recognizing their stitching patterns on the clothes (As Koff explains, during the war many citizens were left too poor to buy new clothes so old clothes were stitched together multiple times -- mothers, wives, daughters, etc were coming to grave sites and recognizing stitches on clothes. That's how they ended up identifying many). The grave sites ran so large sometimes that they actually had to be divided up into quadrants! But the story that struck me the most was regarding the body of a boy Koff discovers who still had marbles in his pocket. That's how young the victim was. That story just crushed me when I read that.I think I can safely say, this book won't be for everyone. I for one though found her story fascinating and moving. Tragic, yes, but important work. Her job enables her to give surviving family members a sense of closure they maybe could not get otherwise. And like she said, her work also forces the killers to be held accountable. This memoir also makes the reader contemplate just how badly people can treat each other and how that has to change. But it won't change unless we face what's happened in the past. That's why I find this book an important read for those brave enough to delve into it.

I was surprised to read such negative reviews for a book that I dearly love and have bought twice (after one copy was loaned and not returned). Maybe it's just an anthropology thing. As an anthro grad student who wants to work in the same types of situation that Ms. Koff describes, her book gives insight into her experiences.This is not a technical book, in fact it reads more like a memoir. So don't expect detailed excavation information, that's not what this book is. And Ms. Koff is young when she goes on these digs (she is just out of her bachelors when she travels to Rwanda). For those who may not know anything about anthropology, this is a big deal. People without a masters degree or with little field experience aren't usually part of these recovery efforts. Ms. Koff was lucky and competent enough to have worked with good professors who had connections and helped her to get on the UN mission. This is not to say she isn't a good scientist, she is, but as many in the field (and in life) know, half the battle is knowing the right person.Some people seemed to want to see some strong emotional responses by Ms. Koff, and I can understand for most people excavating a mass grave in Rwanda would be horribly traumatic. But this is why some people do this work and others don't. You wouldn't expect a doctor or a firegfighter or a soldier to be so wrapped up in the emotion of the moment that they can't focus and get the job done. She is affected, she discusses what she is seeing, imagines what would she do if something as awful as genocide happened to her, how would she save her mother who suffers from some physical limitations making a quick escape impossible. These are the reactions of a forensic anthropologist who has worked on two long and difficult mass recovery missions.There is a place for intense sorrow and grief. The book by the head of the UN security mission (his name escapes me) who worked tirelessly and with little resources to save people during the killing in Rwanda is a good example.Ms. Koff's efforts begin several years after the killings ended. She is an anthropologist who knew what she was getting into and wanted to take on this difficult task to give something of the lost back to their loved ones. This is what a forensic anthropologist does. Becoming overwhelmed by her experiences does a disservice to the same people she is trying to help. She is affected, she feels the responsibility of the mission and her actions and the loss of lives keenly, but she sucks it up and gets the job done. If the Rwandans and Kosovars can bear their losses and continue on, the least she can do is what is expected of her and help them recover their relatives. This book is amazing. I'm studying to become a forensic anthropologist and Clea Koff's writing makes it feel like I'm able to understand what she was experiencing, which helps me understand what I will be experiencing later on. She's engaging and pulls you into her story.

This was the first book my anthropology advisor had me read the first semester of my freshman year of college and it solidified my desire to become a physical anthropologist. A student has since failed to return her copy, so I bought this one to give her as a "thank you" present before my graduation. Anyone considering anthropology should pick it up, it is wonderful! High quality used book. 10/10 would buy again.

I chose five stars because she has helped so many families find their relatives body. To me she could beat Supergirl, with how much she cares!
