I collect books on Palms. I have a whole shelf of them. Thirty? Forty? Maybe more. I think one is the best. I even enjoy the terminally superlative language - almost every species is 'one of the most beautiful palms in the world.' The layout is remarkably easy to follow, both the pictures and the text are absolutely alphabetical (although separate from one another). This means that you can find picture or text in seconds without ever having to consult an index. Could it be any better? I would love to see more pictures... more habitat shots, more shots of mature palms (too many are represented by an immature palm in a garden in Hawaii). But I realize that one has to put a limit somewhere on how much color is practical.There are great tips on cultivation and germinationIf you buy just one book on palms... this is IT.

Volunteering at Lotusland, I found that I had a list of my ten favorite palms. Then I got inspired to propagate Chilean Wine Palms... At some point, I realized that I was hooked on palms, and needed more information. This is an encyclopedia of palms, with photos of each kind and descriptions befitting an encyclopedia. I've spent hour browsing through it. For the right person, this resource book will provide a breadth of information to return to again and again.
Or pretty darn close to it!We've recently moved to FL and want to add some tropical zing to our landscape. A 'wow, look at that' kind of thing. So we joined the local palm society, and became hooked. And don't you know that you just have to know the name of every palm you're going to see?! Even in places you may never go!This book is incredible. There are tons of pictures, making for easy identification w/enough information on each for most of us (unless you're a real palmnut, but then you likely won't need this book!) If you're even considering planting palms, you don't want to do it w/o this book! Make the most educated decisions before digging.We paired it w/the "Pocket Guide to Palms" by Riffle, so we could take the information on the road, to botanical gardens, nurseries, etc. A perfect pair of books!
This is one of the few books on palms that provides at least one photo of every palm listed. The Palm descriptions section is excellent. Common names are not listed with the entries but are available in one of the indexes. Full coverage of the palm family.
The only problem with this reference book is that I don't live in a zone where I can grow them all.
A long-awaited release for the first edition. It has been vastly expanded to include more species, more photos and more information.I have been fascinated by palms and its diversity as I have traveled through many countries. This book will accompany me in all my future travels. I recommend this book to anyone interested in palms of the world. At the low Amazon prices, this book is a bargain and an excellent addition to my book collection.
For someone who is really into palm trees cultivation or for those interested in the Arecaceae family biology and diversity this book is obliged guide and reference, a great illustrated book written plain and simple to help the gardener and satisfy the needs of professionals and hobbyist
