I'm a fan of all Dale Sherman books, he is very thorough and leaves you feeling that you have complete knowledge of who he is writing about. If you like Tarantino movies or just curious about the ins and out of the films, read this book...you won't be disappointed.

If you love QT then this book is must have. Even if you think you know it all already, you will learn more here.

A plethora of facts, tidbits and trivia information for the movie buff, Quentin T fan or just entertainment movie historian. It was amazing the detail and depth of information that this author and book provided. I also enjoyed and appreciated where the author discussed some information that is seen as in conflict depending on the source. It was an eye opening and educational foray into the world of entertainment behind the scenes that I had never thought about or read before.Prior to this book I had only watched a few Quentin Tarantino movies (Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2, Reservoir Dogs, From Dusk till Dawn and Natural Born Killers) and in full honesty never gave a whit of a thought to how it was produced, paid for, etc. I had wondered how sometimes it was supported when the movie was very graphic or violent, but there are movies for every entertainment sector (hello 50 shades) so why not? Ironically the one's I had watched are violent ones and in my household met with mixed reviews..to yes that is amazing to why are we watching it I don't get it. After reading the information, who played and was potentially going to play roles in the movies, how they stayed true or deviated from the script, etc. I am more interested in watching some more of the Quentin Tarantino movies. I feel I will definitely have more set opinions on the endings after reading how some directors/producers changed the endings or scenes in the script.Now, this is not a quick read or an easy read. This is an educational read with a fun flare in my opinion. I could not read it straight through, nor should one try because I feel I would have lost some of the history or true fun trivia with each movie if I had tried. If you enjoy movie trivia, knowing how something was created, the behind the scenes moments and other entertainment knowledge or are just an ardent QT fan I would recommend this book to have and to also pull out when watching a QT movie! I totally agree with the other reviewer: this is a treasure. If you want to understand what quantum electrodynamics is all about in practice, whether you are studying quantum chemistry or molecular physics or not, this is your book. It is a very nice companion volume to anyone studying advanced quantum mechanics and QED for the first time. A caveat, though: the treatment is noncovariant, so maybe people interested in high energy physics may find it "boring." Otherwise, highly recommended!

The book is good, but trying to go through it linearly would be difficult. Also, I'm not sure how one with a background in chemistry could get through this. It is generally pointed to a physicist interested in chem phys. I would recommend this to a student have a strong background in EM fields, QM, and some basic understanding of quantum optics or even QED from a treatment such as that by Greiner.

About the Author

Isaac Kramnick was born in 1938 and educated at Harvard University, where he received a B.A. degree in 1959 and a Ph.D. in 1965, and at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, Yale and Cornell, where he is now Professor of Government. He is married to Miriam Brody Kramnick and lives in Ithaca, New York. Among his publications are Bolingbroke and His Circle, The Rage of Edmund Burke and numerous articles on eighteenth century topics. He has edited William Godwin’s Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, The Federalist Papers by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay and, with Michael Foot, The Thomas Paine Reader for the Penguin Classics. This gives the reader a sense of the popularity of Enlightenment thought, as well as its development from the middle of the seventeenth century to the start of the nineteenth. Covering such luminaries as Voltaire, Kant, Hume, Locke, Rousseau, Jefferson, Pope, Montesquieu, Franklin, Paine, Bentham, Adam Smith and a score of lesser known philosophers and writers; the book hits on major elements of the era - religion, politics, liberty, race, gender and slavery - among others.Within these 700 or so pages, the book provides the reader with an introduction to the Enlightenment and does so in such a way that there's an appreciation as to the role of this unique era in the foundation of our modern society. The selection of readings were both famous and obscure, but the reader is not left feeling that they didn't get a fair shake at the real elements of the philosophy that fueled the American and French revolutions, led to the establishment of the modern Western democracy, and continues to serve as a foundation of modern political and ethical thought.If there is one book for every student to read before they leave high school, or certainly college, it is this one. A must read.

More than forty years ago, when I was a college undergraduate, I ran across several lists books that were recommended reading for anyone who wanted to be truly educated. Those lists invariably included books such as Rousseau's "The Social Contract," The Federalist Papers, Voltaire's "Candide," and many other writings from the Enlightenment era (as well, of course, as other time periods). I dutifully noted the titles, and, wanting to consider myself an educated person, fully intended to read all of them.Well now I'm 62, and it's time for me to admit that I'm almost certainly never going to read "The Social Contract." This volume is for me and others like me, who are suffering from the "So Many Books, So Little Time" syndrome. The book contains a broad selection of writings from the major thinkers of the Enlightenment, which the editor defines roughly from the 1680's to the 1790's.What a marvelous time it must have been to be an intellectual! The barriers erected by the authority of the kings, priests, and classical writers were being shattered. The ability to ask new questions and propose new answers produced an almost intoxicating sense of infinite possibilities for the improvement - even the perfection - of human society.Some of the pieces in this book will seem hopelessly naive to our modern cynical minds; on the other hand, some of the points being made so excitedly and even belligerently are now taken for granted - and we are likely to read them and say, "What's the big deal? Everyone knows that." And then there are the debates about the most fundamental questions - such as the source of knowledge - that have yet to be resolved, and probably never will be.If you read this, you will almost certainly get caught up in the excitement of the exploration of the ideas. You will almost certainly have your own thoughts stimulated, and your own opinions challenged.And you can smugly pretend that you have read Roussseau, Locke, Hume, Kant, and Voltaire - and no one (except real scholars) will be the wiser.

I’ve always been fascinated by America, the American experiment, the American experience. In college, I found my place in the sociology, anthropology, political science and literature of the American people, values and ideals. My novels are born of the culture of merging, conflicting cultures we, as Americans, were born into, from my conviction that dealing with that experience is the challenge of being American. Only once before, in 1968, have I had the horrifying sense that the country was coming apart under the strain, a sense of the great experiment disintegrating.What has happened to us? Where did this disintegration into hate and violence, this contempt for our institutions begin and where is it taking us? From all of my early studies, the work that keeps coming to mind, as I look for answers is Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America. De Tocqueville was a French aristocrat who hated tyranny and feared that democracy would disintegrate into tyranny of the majority. He understood, however that democracy was the future, so in 1831 he came to America in order to see it in action. To my mind, no student should graduate from high school in the United States without reading his observations and reflections on the American people, for we desperately need to renew our sense of not only the hope but the challenges of being an American and a commitment to support its survival as a democracy.De Tocqueville feared individualism and the abolition of the class system that, he believed, gave order and stability to the European nations. He believed that without that order, people would be forever anxious about where they belonged and would end up forever comparing themselves to each other. Forever insecure, their individualism would devolve into selfishness and each would end up alone. We should take a good look at ourselves in light of this fear. Has our insecurity, our need to know where we belong splintered us into rival groups where each gains stature by debunking the other?However, De Tocqueville also found in the Americans, an equality unknown in Europe and with a deep sense of community and civil order. He found a people committed to building a new world, to resolving together the problems that confronted them. He believed that the multitude of civic organizations would counter the dangers of individualism. The men, he thought, would forever strive to power and acquisition of wealth, but the mores, the “habits of the heart” carried by the women, would provide the civilizing force.He has a great deal to say about the role of religion in the New World and many other subjects, but this gives a taste of a perspective different enough to shake up the all-to-stale ideologies that have broken us into enemy camps. We have indeed joined civil action groups, but we have, since Trump’s election, discovered the importance of unwritten mores, that undergird our common culture. That gives us the opportunity to regain our sense of belonging to a whole.His views on the role of women should spark lively conversations on individualism versus commitment for both genders as well as on the effect of the rampant greed of the eighties and nineties. De Tocqueville believed it is the “habits of the heart” that give the Americans strength. We need to rediscover those together.

This is a review of the Library of America 2004 edition of Democracy in America translated by Arthur Goldhammer, found here: Alexis de Tocqueville: Democracy in America: A new translation by Arthur Goldhammer (Library of America). Unfortunately Amazon lumps together reviews of several different editions from several publishers, so it is difficult to know which edition is being reviewed. For this reason, and because many others have reviewed the content of Tocqueville's amazingly insightful work, I will focus solely on the physical aspects of the Library of America edition.In my opinion, the Library of America edition is excellent. It is not the least expensive edition, but I believe it is worth the extra dollars, and is really quite reasonably priced given the quality. Considering it contains over 900 pages covering both volumes 1 and 2 of Democracy in America, the book is remarkably compact at 5 inches wide by 8 inches tall by 1.25 inches thick. This is made possible by using thin paper which still appears to be quite durable. The hardbound binding also appears to be very durable, and even contains a built-in ribbon marker. Even the dust jacket is made from heavier than usual stuff. The font used for the text is large and very clear. The 2004 translation by Goldhammer is in what I would call a modern style of English that I found easy to understand. In other words, I didn't have to fight the translation in order to follow and think about what Tocqueville was actually saying.There are several helps included. The frontispiece contains a map from the original 1835 edition that describes North America as it was when Missouri and Arkansas were the westernmost states. Translated from the French, it proved to be quite helpful at times. The end of the volume contains a chronology that is a pretty thorough biography of Tocqueville himself. There is also an extensive index, along with notes on the text and translation.All in all, I found this to be an understandable and durable edition that does justice to Tocqueville's timeless work. I recommend it.

It is quite amazing and by far my favorite translation and compilation of all things Tocqueville. How the books and chapters are divided at first seem confusing, but you quickly adjust if you are familiar with Tocqueville. I am definitely not a Tocqueville scholar, but I guarantee this is the greatest review of the American political system to this day. Pick up a copy of The Federalist Papers and Anti-federalist Papers while you're at it and you will have the quintessential trifecta of American democracy.

Given that I do not speak/read French, I cannot speak to the accuracy of the translation, however, this translation was a pleasure to read in English. Also, the footnotes were helpful, and the chronology section helped put Tocqueville himself in context nicely. I read the kindle edition, and it was well formatted.Apart from this specific translation/edition, I don't think that I can add much that isn't already out there about Democracy in America other than perhaps to point out that you are much less likely to find it interesting if you are not at least somewhat familiar with 18th and 19th century French history. If this is the case, I would recommend at least reading "Revolutionary France 1770-1880" by François Furet prior to starting Democracy in America.

Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said in a CNN interview in 1998:"This civilization is best described by the renowned French sociologist Alexi de Toqueville who spent some two years in the U.S. in the 19th century and wrote the valuable book entitled Democracy in America, which I am sure most Americans have read."Well, I don't think that's the case. I've taken this book around with me for the last few years and have asked many Americans... and have yet to meet one.

Oracle 12c is the latest in a long line of Oracle products. After struggling to match three versions of Oracle 11 OCCI drivers and my client's various databases, I thought that it would just be easier in general if I got a good look at where Oracle was going. This book seemed to be the answer. It has a very good top level introduction to 12c, but it never descends far into the particulars to give you an understanding of the differences.I think that with only 380 pages of working text that that was a good decision. The other Oracle working manuals are over 700 pages in size and they don't really reach a comprehensive level of coverage either.I think this book serves well to introduce the new product without getting lost in the details. Chapter 8 and 9 on performance tuning and concurrency are as close as it comes to introducing the differences of version 12c compared to 10 and 9. This approach is consistent with Oracle's previous documentation. In other words, there is no one stop shopping for an Oracle book.You will have to buy a number of them to cover any particular database design issue. The point is simply that you must be committed to Oracle as a database solution. If you aren't, pick up some other database.

This book was my text for my Oracle's Database Administration class at Georgia Piedmont Technical School. The course include all fifteen chapters; I read all of them and created Cornell notes for topic because the book lack resources that are part of most textbooks. For example, there was no summary of the chapter or review questions. Given the depth of the subject, a summary or additional exercises students a teaching strategy that would help comprend the concepts. Students in 21st century students expect additional features from book that is used as text in college courses.

I ordered this book because I want to get Oracle 12c up and running to the point that I could begin exploring it. The Irony is in that I purchased the Kindle version, which is returnable, but I meant to buy the paper book instead. I missed the chance to browse it and in retrospective I could have detected that this book is not for me in either form.The reason? Its title suggests that you will be able to learn the essentials of the database, like installing it, configuring it to a minimum level, create some tables and start practicing your SQL. Oracle is such a complex subject, that whoever masters it can command a 100,000.00 salary. But as I started reading the book, I began to realize that it talks a lot about the Relational Model, Oracle's Philosophy, a little bit of history, etc. etc. etc. However, it never goes down to earth and gives you a step by step instruction on any of the thousand topics that can actually gives you some how-to skill. You cannot even use this book for installing the software which is supposed to be the simplest things to do with any package. In Oracle you have several major topics, either one being a totally different career. Database Administrator, SQL Developer, Data Architect, Database Network Designer. With this book you never get either 101.I guess the book will be good if I need to define a concept for a term paper. For example, what is a instance. Many tutorials on YouTube do a better job showing how to do something specific, for free. That is, if you can identify them.Very disappointed.For the book, Oracle Essentials means being able to discuss the Oracle theories and even the features, but apparently it assumes that you don't want to actually test anything to get your hand dirty. I guess it is a great book for the scholars who need to reference DBMS without having to install it and use it. Or for the ones who already knows a lot and want to see what new features may be available in the "new" 12c version.

Excellent book for anyone who want to understand the concepts and features of the Oracle Database.Note: It is NOT a guide to learn how to use the Oracle Database, or to become an expert db admin (no code/sql). It is a reference book to understand how the system works and what are the features.

This book condenses the Oracle database system into an easy to read format. The book manages to present the essential information on Oracle architecture in technically precise language without being overly dry or resorting to silliness. The pleasant writing style is something not often found in technical literature, except in O'Reilly books. A must read for DBAs.

If you want to understand how Oracle works from 30,000 feet, and then some deep dives, this book will help give you perspective.It will put a box around the confusing questions if you new to Oracle. Read it completely and soak it in, but realize that while the basic architecture probably won't change, every company does something different and you will need much more than this overview to understand. But this is a good place to start.

If you want to know how Oracle Database works, this is the book, don't miss it.Introduced clearly, written very well and easy to read.
