Review

“When teen activist Julia Bluhm made headlines for challenging digitally altered images of young women in Seventeen magazine, the media omitted mention of her collaboration with adult women from the organization SPARK movement. Brown addresses a problem increasingly voiced within the girls’ rights movement; the persistence of a faux-feminist profit-driven ‘girl power’ image that threatens the coalition between adults and girls that’s needed for feminism to thrive. Using real examples of youth activists and the women who support them, she critiques mainstream methods of ‘girl empowerment’ and offers solutions that go beyond the celebration of individual ‘super girls.’”—Ms.“A refreshing counterpoint to age-old freakouts about teens’ lives, highlighting cool examples of girls who are working to change culture in big ways...this guide shifts the focus away from self-improvement and adults bestowing wisdom on teens and instead centers on ways women and girls can engage with each other as peers, sharing knowledge and shaping an entirely different world.”—Sarah Mirk, Bitch Magazine“Powered by Girl is for everyone—parents, mentors, and teachers—who work with girls. Even girls 14 and above who want to be activists can get a lot out of reading it. It offers an insight into how we can all work for a social change rooted in intergenerational and inclusive ways.”—Skipping Stones Magazine“Powered By Girl is inherently, intrinsically, and inevitably intersectional. It doesn’t fall victim to easy platitudes about what it’s like to fight for change as a girl or a woman, and it doesn’t ignore the complexities of difference (age, race, class, sexual orientation, ability, etc.) in these relationships. Intersectionality in supporting girls and fostering effective activism must be intersectional, and it must be collaborative...A must read for any woman even remotely close to being an activist, Powered By Girl demands that girls and women need to work together, learn from each other, and inspire each other to disrupt ingrained systemic injustices and oppression against women—all women. And that’s the key. Alone, we are doomed. But together, we are unstoppable.”—Kaitlin Tremblay, Shameless Magazine“If you’re committed to working with girls—and I mean really working with them in every respect, through all the messy beauty of their activism—Powered by Girl is an essential read.”—Loretta Ross, Co-founder of SisterSong“Highlighting the collective dimensions of girls’ activism, Powered by Girl is an important corrective to over-simplified discussions of girls’ empowerment. Brown’s passionate call for intergenerational collaboration engages with the challenges and rewards of this kind of activism, demonstrates a profound respect for girls’ knowledge and expertise, and asks all the right questions about how adults can better support girls in the struggle for a more just world.”—Jessica K. Taft, author of Rebel Girls: Youth Activism and Social Change Across the Americas“Behind every ‘exceptional’ girl is...a movement! Kudos to Lyn Mikel Brown for identifying the architecture that lifts up the next generation of feminists!”—Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards, authors of Manifesta and Grassroots“If you teach, mentor, or work with girls, you need to read Powered by Girl. Full of stories and strategies, it’s a must-read manual for nurturing agency, sisterhood, and critical consciousness in girl activists. Adults will learn when to step up and when to step back, how to cultivate inclusiveness and truth telling among girls, and how to develop the most fertile conditions for girl activism to flourish.”—Rachel Simmons, author of Odd Girl Out and The Curse of the Good Girl“I am a huge fan of Lyn Mikel Brown’s; her partnerships with girls and support of their activism are nothing short of revolutionary. Powered by Girl explains how she joined forces across generations to make change—and, even better, how we can too!”—Peggy Orenstein, author of Girls & Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape“Brown offers us a powerful and urgent critique of the media generated ‘kick-ass girl,’ a mythical girl who supposedly needs no one but herself to change the world. Behind the scenes, Brown shows us how real girls and women can truly kick some ass by working together on jointly constructed actions for social justice. An essential read for those who want to create a more just and humane world and want girls and women to lead the way. Read it right here, right now!”—Niobe Way, author of Deep Secrets: Boys’ Friendship and the Crisis of Connection“In this bold, inspiring book, Lyn Mikel Brown investigates the realities and possibilities of intergenerational activism—and does not shrink from the challenges. A blueprint for intergenerational feminist work, Powered by Girl offers multiple strategies for adult women to build hopeful, respectful activist relationship with girls, all the while acknowledging the complexities of grassroots politics today.”—Anita Harris, Research Professor, Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University“The development of honest dialogues between adult allies and girls is the key to social change—and recognizing that girls are the most qualified experts of their experiences is critical to their activism. Lyn Mikel Brown’s book accurately captures the benefits—and challenges—of how to nurture our next generation of change agents.”—Clarice Bailey and Charlotte Jacobs, Girls Justice League“Powered by Girl is a godsend for everyone who parents or works with girls. Girls are passionate about making the world a better place. But when they try to do so, obstacles appear that adults need to help with. Lyn Mikel Brown shows us how and challenges us to go far beyond vague good intentions by building genuine, respectful, mutually trusting relationships that succeed in making change both out in the world and inside ourselves.”—Nancy Gruver, Founder, New Moon Girls“Powered by Girl is the essential manual for anyone working with young activists—from youth workers to seasoned mentors. Lyn Mikel Brown presents the necessary skills for adult allies to be supportive and effective backseat drivers while girls do the steering.”—Wendy Lesko, President of Youth Activism Project and Co-Founder of School Girls Unite“In an increasingly commodified feminist movement, Powered by Girl offers insight into how girls and young women can reimagine a movement rooted in political activism, and gives activists the tools to do so in an intergenerational and inclusive way.”—Julie Zeilinger, Founding Editor, FBomb“Powered by Girl is a compelling narrative and rationale for feminist intergenerational practices with girls, dismantling ageist models of girls’ programming, and making visible the diverse ways coalitions of girls and their allies are pushing forward a new feminist agenda. An important book for all interested in girls’ studies and girls’ activism.”—Amy Rutstein-Riley, PhD, MPH, Principal Investigator of The Girlhood Project at Lesley University

"Because the media consistently suppressed collective collaboration and instead hyped Julia's individual achievement, she and her team lost a genuine opportunity to educate youth and the adults who work with them about the most important truth about effective social-change work: you don't do it alone."This is a great book on how to support girls in activism.I appreciate that this book goes into the difference between women in leadership roles and activism (for example, helping girls re-shape existing power systems so they can thrive instead of simply participating in current structures and going beyond "empowerment" to give girls the reigns) and how to support girls in their journeys. This book also talks about some of the struggles that groups supporting girls face such as not taking their experiences seriously or pushing an agenda that doesn't align with what the youth want to do. Discussing not only common problems but how to overcome them makes this book through. There's also lots on power structures and privilege and how it's okay to laugh and make mistakes. This is a wonderful book that educators/mentors/youth and organizations should all read and take to heart. By giving girls support and understanding when they're so young, we give them the tools they need to change the world.

With #metoo and the 2nd annual Women's march, it seemed like a good time to grab this book for another read. This book continues to be relevant and engaging for women and men who want to work with and support young women in achieving their own aims and ambitions as feminists and activists. First up is the firm reminder that young women aren't here to carry on the legacy of their elders; they are here to carry on the spirit of their elders, innovating and moving forward with their own visions. Second up is the mythbuster, still needed, that successful women activitists act alone. #metoo reinforces that, but how long will it take before we simmer back down to a world in which successful women are mavericks and one-offs rather than part of supportive and strong networks. The third idea that resonates is the mental shift in which women drive the conversation and write their own definitions of success rather than supporting each other in entering the male conversation and achieving "male" success. The author starts there and keeps right on going with practical advice and necessary cautions based on her academic work and experience. Worth reading as a mentor, a teacher, a parent, or even as a young women of high school age or beyond.

Powered by Girl: A Field Guide for Supporting Youth Activists, by Lyn Mikel Brown, is a well-organized book. I'm interested in developing a training program for young adults to become activists, so the subject of Brown's book was of interest. First, I appreciate and recognize the focus in this book on girls, but I note that many of the activist development issues also apply to boys. Second, my book now has numerous Post-it tags. There are many, many thoughtful tidbits throughout. I will have all my students read chapter 1, "The myth of the special girl." I also like chapter 3, which details 6 reasons why "...we should be engaging girls in activism and social-change work" (p. 48).This book seems written less for the girl activist, and more for the adult supporters of activist girls.

This volume is great as it is for leaders of groups of young women who want to effect change for helping to steer them and recognizing ways to assist that help promote their mission in a more authentic way.I agree with a second reviewer who suggested a volume be written for the girls themselves to help them recognize the ways they can be better and fight some societal issues themselves...having an adult to help empower you is wonderful, but it's great when you have that and your own standalone tools for helping yourself.

I was impressed by Lyn Mike Brown's "Powered by Girl". The author covers a lot of ground on engaging young girls in their activism from the girls understanding themselves to the world around them but also for those who are mentoring to understand as well. The author does a good job of reiterating and reinforcing but also inspiring. It isn't so long that it can overstay its welcome but it isn't so short that it comes off as trite feel-good babble. It has a nice grounded and thoughtful balance to it.

I loved reading Powered by Girl! It is a great book for educators and mentors who work with teen girls. Lyn Mikel Brown challenges readers to think critically about societies reactions to social movements that claim to empower girls. She takes on both gender and generational myths that threaten to impede girls from their place in activism as a coming-of-age right. Having worked with teenage girls in formal classrooms, summer camps, and in different countries, I wish I had read this book long ago. This book gets to the heart of what it means to empower girls and question our actions and assumptions. Powered by Girl does not always make intergenerational work sound easy, but it successfully expresses the importance with guidance and real-life examples for anyone dedicated to working authentically with girls.

Growing up and living in a small town is very different from growing up in a larger place. I was very interested to read the book to find out the challenges that girls face now and how adults are working to empower them.I agree that adults are stuck in their ways of this is how it is and this is how it's going to be when dealing with teens. I like the idea of the adults watching and interacting when needed but allowing the teens to try things for themselves and experience thing. But they always know they have the support that they need when they need it.I believe every female teacher, girl scout leader, any female who deals with teen girls should read this book. There is a ton of information that would better everyone not just activists. I know personally the way I interact with my niece's will change for the better in the future.

I have read 8 books on Vedic astrology and numerous articles and videos over the last four years or so. I number of books I just glanced at via "sample" books. By far the best introductory book to this immense topic is Light on Life. It is both comprehensive and detailed to be considered more than just an introduction to Jyotish. It is a book for both beginners and intermediate astrologers. If I had only one book to choose, this would be it. Is it the only book you will need? No. For example, it does not give much credit to the study of Shad Bala and does not cover a number of predictive techniques. But both of these would need another book to adequately cover (and for predictive techniques, there are several of which each of these could use a book or two). But de Fouw and Svoboda do an exceptional job of introducing he heart of Jyotish and providing many detailed indications of the planets, signs, houses, and even a good introduction to the Nakshartras. For example, they list many characteristics of the planets that other books simply ignore. Also, their commentary on each house adds unique insight to the already detailed list of indications. The only fault, if you can even call it that, is that present so much information and do it so concisely that it can overwhelm the beginner. You may need to reread portions several times before a concept is understood. However, if you make the effort and do not give up, you should find this book to be an immense aid throughout your astrological studies. While there are areas of controversy, I still believe this book to be the best out there.

This is a fairly interesting book. It covers the elements of ancient India astrology. If you are not familiar, I recommend using the book with the study of a course.I am in Vedic astrology 1.Good Luck.

There are many books for Beginners in Vedic Astrology which are written more like a cook-book, and where essentially you just take a look at the placement of the planet on your chart and then read what it's supposed to mean. This is not that kind of a book. This book assumes that you are seriously interested in grasping Vedic Astrology and it guides you step-by-step toward developing a solid level of understanding and competence. The book contains countless correspondencies of planetary influences (grahas), constellations (rashis) and houses (bhavas). These correspondencies go way beyond just interpreting the natal chart, and enable the skilled jyotishi to get insight into the individual, question or particular situation sometimes even without looking at the chart. Understanding of these numerous correspondencies can enable jyotishi to assist the individual in successfully dealing with challenging situation.Even though this book is "an introduction" to Vedic astrology, it may not be the best choice as the very first book on astrology. For absolute beginners, perhaps a book like Beneath a Vedic Sky may be a better choice to start with.

This book is very well compiled. Each statement conveys something meaningful. Would recommend this as the first book that a vedic astrology student must read.Update July 2014:After reading many more books in the past few years, I still cannot believe that I keep coming back to this book.It is not just a book for amateur but also a quick reference for many basic things about vedic astrology. After studying this book, one can venture into the following ocean of knowledgehttp://www.vedicastrologer.org/classes/index.htm(Pdt. Sanjay Rath Lectures)[...]

One of the best books on Vedic Astrology I've ever come across. The authors do a magnificent job of leading you thought a great body of knowledge crucial to understanding of how Vedic Astrology works. Highly recommend it.

What a great reference book. I can find anything I need by way of explanation. Very clear and very helpful!

Thus is very good book for everyone who is into astrology , specially those who who are gaining the knowledge of vedic astrology from various sources like internet , books , discussions etc ..Amazingly written book which reflects the amount of experience and focus author has on this divine science of indian astrology . Being an Indian I have not come across any indian author who have expressed his/her exe the way the author has.

This book is awesome. It explains everything in layman terms, so easy to understand. Good flow of topics and very well written! Absolutely recommended for those stepping newly into the world of "Vedic" astrology.

Book Review of The Complete Santa Fe Bucket List, 100 Hundred Things to Do in Santa Fe Before You Die, by Patricia C. Most off the stuff in this book you can find on internet if you click first couple of links of “things to do in Santa Fe”

Great, but not as extensive as I would like.

I was expecting a more in depth review of the amenities and attractions in the Santa Fe area. The book just seems to skim the surface of places to explore around the Northern New Mexico vicinity. Maybe the book would be more valuable for someone who had never visited the area before.

Patricia Hodapp’s Bucket List of 100 great things to do in Santa Fe is a highly recommended guide for those wishing to explore northern New Mexico’s culture. Once in Ansel Adams and Georgia O’Keeffe country, these rare illustrations such as the Plaza and a burst of clouds above the Sangre de Cristo Mountains correctly depict the unique flavor exclusive to the southwest. The book recommends tours, bike and hikes, local cuisine, Spanish Market, the Loretto Chapel, Botanical Gardens, where to do art classes and not-to-be missed lectures. One of my favorites is the Natilla desert (must try this!) and catching a Pow Wow or two. Definitely a book to buy for those wanting that extra special dose of New Mexico which can’t be found anywhere else.

I live in NM and have been coming to Santa Fe for years, and I still needed this great guide to what not to miss. Santa Fe keeps changing, yes, but there's so much to discover, you need a guide. Ms. Hodapp's 40 years-worth of specialized experience gives her a wonderful expertise on everything from the best margaritas to the most sacred spots. In addition, her passion for the land, the history and the people enriches her commentary. There's probably no such thing as a complete list, but she has certainly captured the things that make Santa Fe the unique and special place it is. This book makes a great gift, but I wouldn't want to do without it myself.

Loved this comprehensive and well written guide to all of the "must sees" in Santa Fe. I felt as if I was invited into author Hodapp's home , given a rich cup of coffee, while she told me about her favorite eateries and museums, sprinkled with a few haunted places and vigorous hiking trails for which the "City Different" is known. After reading this colorful and honest book, I soon realized that although I have been there many times, there were still sights and sounds that I missed.A personal love affair combined with honest working knowledge is an unbeatable combination when writing a travel guide. Tuck this book away in your satchel. Highly recommended.

This little book is essential reading for tourists who visit Santa Fe—as well as residents who live there! The author, Patricia C. Hodapp, the City Librarian, has a deep and passionate knowledge of the city and uses it to introduce to the numerous charms of Santa Fe and the surrounding area. The book is filled with ideas about things to see and do in the City Different, from sightseeing, shopping, hiking, celebrity-watching, skiing, appreciating art galleries, museums, and—not least—eating in some of the best restaurants anywhere. Readers learn many fascinating tidbits about the long history and rich culture and unique ambience of Santa Fe. How many know that the Manhattan Project (housed in nearby Los Alamos) that created the atomic bomb, for purposes of secrecy during World War II, used a building near the Santa Plaza as its official address? Or that Bob Dylan and Paul Simon wrote songs about Santa Fe? And where to start with the world-class and varied food that is to be had there?

Casting Spells is in my opinion the best book to read after Earth Magic. The way that Karfia Zoe writes is so soothing and comprehensive, that you can tell it comes from her heart. The techniques she puts forth in Casting Spells can't be stressed enough. You get out of them what you put into them. She stresses the fact that your own words are the most powerful. I can tell you from my own experience that the more feeling and emotion you put into your spells, the better and quicker the results. This review is for Talking to the Goddess. This book had a profound affect on me. I had never given the Goddess her due. This book changed all that. I always looked at the Goddess as the feminine side of the Creator! Never as a desperate deity that worked along side The Great Father Spirit and was in charge of everything upon the earth, (Mother Nature, Earth Mother, so to speak.) Native Americans I have met say this has been an accepted fact since creation, for them. Also the ancient essences made reference and gave her reverence. I had always felt that the living things in nature including the animals could communicate to you if you listened, like turning a radio dial. This book will help you to understand that we can get help and the answers we seek if we tune ourselves into Nature and The Goddess.

Well-written, easy reads - engaging and informative. Once again, Zoe Kardia shares her knowledge through well-written, easy reads that are engaging and informative. These are helpful references for both the beginner as well as practitioners who wish to review the basics. While communicating with the Goddess with a clear and focused mind is helpful, I myself, converse with the Goddess throughout each day whenever the need arises, whether for help in finding lost objects, or seeking clarity, guidance and protection in personal situations. Daily, I respectfully invoke the Elements, especially Air energy when a gentle wind is needed to cool or clear cigarette smoke from posted non-smoking areas. Various crystals from around the world share my home and workplace, providing balance, courage, clearer communication, harmony, healing energy, and protection. Easily understood, and a comfort to read, this two-book set should be an important part of any beginner or practitioner’s reference library. Well done!

Casting Spells AND Talking to the Goddess By Kardia ZoeCasting spells book give easy spells to try and as simple tools to use. Kardia Zoe writes in simple language for anyone to follow. In the book Talking to the Goddess she started out with explaining ways to begin and gives simple and easy to use information to help anyone beginning their path to converse with the Goddess and help start an individual on a more balance journey. The book is packed with information and resources to help guide the reader on to expand their knowledge and practice.Pamela L. Doane

These books made a great pair. Great for beginners and also some wonderful nuggets of wisdom for non-beginners. The Universal Laws discussed in Casting Spells poses as a wonderful reminder for all of us practicing the Craft that we must remain positive and send out the right kind of energy in order to see any positive results. I appreciated the tips in Talking to the Goddess that provide simple yet effective ways to strengthen our relationship with the Divine. Especially for the beginner, it makes creating and nurturing a relationship with the Divine seem more attainable and not as complicated as it can be made out to be.

Zoe writes to insure that everyone can clearly understand what is necessary for casting spells. The intention and the warning of asking for something that is not morally right is stressed. Stating that spellbooks are to be used only as guidelines is wonderful, especially for beginners. As for talking with the Goddess...that is something we should all be doing. Rituals and daily activities should speak directly to the Divine and the dialogue should come from within our own spiritual beings, not from someone else's thoughts and ideas. We are the Divine.

I liked this book a lot. As a fairly new witch I usually read such books and take in the info/opinions. I use what works for me and leave what doesn't. Part 1 of this book, Casting Spells had me pulling out my BOS and taking notes as I went along. That was a lot of fun for me. I really gleened some fantastic info about spell work, using the elements and various tools. Part 2 Talking to the Goddess was beautiful. Body, health, energy & emotions all connected to everything seen and unseen is what I walked away with. Very empowering to me as a witch and as a woman.

These books are great for beginning practitioners of Wicca. Written in a friendly, very readable style - the author makes it enjoyable to digest a lot of information (new, for many). The first book helps me feel more confident about spell work, which I have been nervous about doing wrong. And the second book reminds me to, and how to, stay in touch with and open to the influence of the divine (and that even for a born Catholic, this doesn't have to take place in church!).These two books are a natural pair, discussing energy both from the source and channeled for a purpose. Will revisit often.

This was a great two-book set! Casting spells isn't so much a book of recipe spells, but explains the the Universal Laws of spell work, guidence on how to use magical tools, herbs, crystals, & candles. There's also a great reference guide for the magical energies & properties of plans and herbs used in spellwork.Talking with the Goddess is great guide for learning to control your thoughts, and state of mind by training in meditation. She gives some wonderful grounding techniques, instructions on how to find a mantra to fits you, and lessons for pranayama.

A fellow Buroker-fan told me that the more I read of this series, the more I'm going to enjoy this and the more action I'm going to get. She was not mistaken as I seem to like each book more. Although I do have to say that I may prefer Sardelle with her silly name to Cas, but I adore both the crazy evil scientist Tolemek and the a bit loony pilot Ridge. Why can't we have all four POV-s at once?Action-wise this book starts right where the previous book ended and is full of even more action than the previous books in the series. And guess what? I liked it a lot! As with the previous stories, the laugh out loud worthy banter makes it all even better. Example:“Just don’t get close to the body,” Zirkander said. “We’re leaving that for Tolemek.” “Really,” he[Tolemek] said. “Don’t you want to get your microscope out and look at some brain bits?” “Brain bits, Zirkander? How is it your people consider you a national hero?” “We have low standards for heroism in Iskandia.” “Obviously.”I may not have been a fan of the insecurities Tolemek and Cas felt towards their relationship as they seemed so badass otherwise, BUT I felt that the book simply flew by and, of course, left me wanting more of this world. Which I am going to do ASAP, of course.

I had not read any books by Lindsay Buroker until just a few days ago, when I bought and read the first three books in this series. I loved them and immediately bought this one, which I also loved. This book was very well written. It had a larger ratio of fantasy to romance than the first books, but the love relationships between each couple were evolving and growing stronger. There was some minor sexual bantering but no graphic sex. This was not a 'hot' romance, but had a very satisfying depiction of new loving and caring relationships that were strengthening.I got the feeling that this book was a stepping stone to the further development of the series. I definitely do not mean that in a pejorative way; this was still a strong entry in the series. No new characters were added and the kidnapped sister and dragon still played minor roles, although the scene was set for them to play a greater role. In some paranormal romance series that I like, new protagonists are central in each book, with previous protagonists having supporting roles. Maybe because this is a fantasy romance, Ms. Buroker has chosen to focus on her core characters from the first two books in the third and fourth ones. This approach works with the series, as it deepens the characterization of the heros, heroines and supporting characters. The pacing was good. There was a fair bit of travelling and several action scenes in this book, where the elements of action, plot, setting, characterization and dialogue combined perfectly to engage the reader and create a strong story. I especially loved the bits of witty repartee and sarcasm. Ms. Buroker can definitely write great dialogue. This book could be read as a stand alone book but the reader would miss too much. It is better read in order, after the previous books. There was no cliffhanger, but the scene was set for the next adventure, for those who want to continue with the series. That leads to my one complaint. This book appears to have been published in December of 2014, and this is only February of 2015, which means there are no new volumes for me to read. I am having withdrawal symptoms and I want to read more books set in the world created by Ms. Buroker.I highly recommend this series and this book. I think they have broad appeal to various age groups, from teens to seniors who like fantasy combined with romance. I am in my 60s, but I think my daughter and granddaughter would certainly enjoy them.

Another marvelous story in the Dragon Blood series.Once again, Lindsay manages to weave together an intriguing, fast paced story with all of the characters that have been well developed over the past 3 books.A few major notes regarding this book. Again, the pacing is fantastic, just like in the previous books. Just as one event is dealt with/overcome, another immediately pops it's head up. There is no down time for these characters.Speaking of the characters, everyone is back, and in fine form. Characters are honest to themselves, although I can't say there's much evolution in any of them. More of the same old behavior from each, however, that's fine by me as I like all of the characters. The only slight difficulty I had, was concerning the perspective each section is written from. Ms. Buroker seems to switch seamlessly between characters while narrating the story, so it can be difficult to tell, at times, who's side of the story is being told. Within a span of a few pages, the story can be told from Ahn's, then Tolemek's then Sardelle's perspective, all without a formal transition. This largely works, but it can lead to some head scratching moments till you pinpoint who's speaking. Finally, the conclusion/epilogue of the book form a satisfactory, if not truly satisfying ending. What they do serve to do, is like every other page in her books, to make you think, "Great, what's next?!"

I can’t believe that I didn’t review this the first time I read it … or I can’t remember doing it anyway. This, like the majority of Buroker’s books, was freaking fantastic to read. I love the imagination that she has when it comes to coming up with stuff, it always lends to a great read. There is the way cool pilot stuff, secret military lab, booby traps, and fatalish dangers possible, and all woven in are characteresque things where you get more shading and details on and about the couples and the ways that each character thinks about the same situation.I just fail at explaining why I love this series so much … sorry! You should really read it for yourself. It has action, adventure, just the right touch of romance to keep things interesting, and just is riveting all around to read.

This is her 4th book in the series. I bought this book years ago and just started reading it. It is good for teens and adults. No explicit nonsense, but there is romance. The book is engaging and interesting. I had trouble putting it down at times. Of course one books leads to the next in the series, but I found at this point that after this book, I was at a good point to take a break. I would recommend this as a great magical escape book with romance included.

Eureka!: 50 Incredible Stories of Scientific Discovery

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—A collected biography of 50 influential scientists, organized chronologically by year of birth, from Pythagoras of Samos to James Hanson. About four to six pages are dedicated to each figure's body of work and influence. A "But There's More" section lists trivia-style facts and suggestions for further research after each subject. A running theme of the work is the importance of collaboration and reworking old ideas. Grant highlights how scientists are often in dialogue with one another—this conversation is essential to scientific advancement. In his introduction, Grant acknowledges the lack of diversity (in regard to gender) in most representations of scientists and admits that his selection process reflects his personal judgment. There are a fair amount of women scientists covered. However, the focus is squarely on Western achievement (scientists from Asia, Africa, or South America are largely omitted). Attention is brought to those who were dismissed because of prejudice, for example, Lise Meitner, Ignaz Semmelweis, and Émilie du Châtelet. The writing is very approachable, although at times a bit too colloquial (Semmelweis's coworkers are referred to as a "stupid bunch"). VERDICT More for pleasure reading than reports. Put this in the hands of students with an interest in STEM and history.—Sharon M. Lawler, formerly at Randolph Elementary, TX

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review. Thanks to NetGalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for the opportunity to read and review Eureka!: 50 Scientists Who Shaped Human History! This book is full of insights into scientific pioneers both professional and personal. From B.C. to modern times, details explaining theories and interesting tidbits of each scientist fill this easy to read informational book - 4 stars!

This is a collection of mini biographies of some of the great scientists who have contributed to our current understanding of ourselves, our world and the universe we live in. In his introduction, John Grant points out that any selection is going to be subjective to a degree, but all the major names are here – Galileo, Newton, Einstein, etc. - as well as several who are less well known, certainly to me. The book is aimed at teens and young adults, but frankly it works equally well for older adults like me, who have only a superficial knowledge of the history of science. Each section follows roughly the same pattern. Grant quickly places the person in the overall timeline of scientific discovery, gives a short personal biography showing how they got involved in their particular area of science, and then explains their major achievements and, in some cases, their failures. The chapters vary in length, from a couple of pages for those people who made one specific contribution to science – like Edward Jenner, the man who discovered that cowpox could be used to create a vaccine for smallpox, leading eventually to its worldwide eradication (why didn't I know about him?!) – to perhaps ten or so pages for those, like Newton or Einstein, who fundamentally changed the perception of the fields in which they worked. The book is structured chronologically, which allows Grant to show very clearly how each generation of scientists built on the work of those before them – in Newton's words: “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”Grant's writing style is clear and very approachable, never talking down to his audience, and with a good deal of humour laced through the book to prevent the science becoming too dry. He makes the science side clear enough on the whole for even the more scientifically challenged amongst us to understand, at least until we get to relativity and quantum thingummyjigs, at which point my eyes began to roll in my head and my tongue lolled out. However, that's my normal reaction to these things, so I don't hold Grant to blame – he almost got me to sorta understand why the whole E = mc2 thing was important, which is more than many science writers have done. And I briefly felt I'd grasped the Schrödinger's cat thing too... but the moment passed. (I've always felt it would have been of more practical benefit if Schrödinger had explained how to get a cat in a box, myself...)But the science is only part of it. The book is as much about the history of scientific research and gives an unvarnished glimpse at some of the jealousies and backstabbing that happen in that world as much as in any other. Grant shows how sometimes female scientists would be sidelined or have credit for their work taken by their male colleagues, often only being given recognition decades or even centuries after the event. To be fair, this happened to plenty of male scientists too, either because they were outside the snobby scientific community or simply from professional rivalries getting out of hand. Men heavily outnumber women in the book, but this is to be expected since, as Grant points out, until very recently (and still, in some parts of the world) science wasn't considered a suitable occupation for the “gentler sex”. Hah! Tell that to Marie Curie, or Émilie du Châtelet! Mostly, though, the story is one of co-operation and collaboration, especially when the book brings us towards the present day. Each chapter ends with a little summary of factlets, such as whether the scientist has had any comets, craters, prizes etc named after her/him, plus suggestions for further reading, and information about films or music that may have been based on or inspired by her/him. These sections, I should warn you, can be fatal to your to-be-read and to-be-watched piles...In summary, I think this is an excellent book, informative, well written and well presented, that gives an overview of the science and scientists which is easily digestible without feeling superficial. Science has changed since I was a girl (they've discovered the Earth isn't flat, for a start) and scientific writers have realised they have to make the subject interesting if they want young people to be attracted into it. This book does that – Grant writes with a warm enthusiasm and respect for the work these scientists do, without ever setting them up as unapproachable objects of reverence. He includes not just the great theoreticians whose ideas about the workings of the universe may be quite hard for the layperson to really grasp, but also more practical scientists, making a difference to our day-to-day lives, in medical research, climatology, computing, etc.I read it straight through and enjoyed getting a feeling for the timeline of science, but this would also work very well as a reference book to look up or remind oneself of what a particular scientist is noted for. Highly recommended for any young person from about 13 up, I'd say, and for any adult who would just like to know a bit more about the subject.NB This book was kindly provided for review by the author, whom I know via the blogging world. However, the review reflects my honest opinion.

XXXXXCan you name these people (*answers at the end of this review)? If you can’t, then maybe you know what they have in common:(1) “Victim of a lynch mob, the greatest female mathematician/philosopher of the ancient world.”(2) “The Hungarian physician whose discovery of the importance of hospital hygiene has saved countless millions of lives.”(3) “The great Austrian physicist who was also the progenitor of a famous hypothetical cat.”(4) “A brilliant experimenter who revealed the mysteries of electromagnetism and the fraudulence of spirit mediums.”(5) “The U.S. atmospheric scientist who alerted the world to the dangers of climate change.”What these five people have in common is that their biographies all found in this informative and easy-to-read book by John Grant. He is a prolific author of fiction and non-fiction books. In this book, Grant offers vivid biographies of fifty important people (in order of birth) who have helped humanity understand our universe in some way. He does not focus just on their ideas and breakthroughs that made them so important but also on their lives and their various quirks. The author realizes that his list is “a matter of personal judgement” and that some readers may object to certain inclusions and omissions. That’s O.K. However, I did find that if you removed any of the people on Grant’s list, the wonderful story of science would probably be a different story.Throughout this book, are black and white pictures of most of those people on the author’s list. As well, at the beginning of each biography is a summary of the person being profiled. I have given five of these summaries above. At the end of each biography, there’s a “But there’s more…” section that gives that lists interesting facts about the person being profiled and gives suggestions for further reading. This book’s subtitle is “50 scientists who shaped human history.” Actually, this is not quite true. Even though the majority of people profiled in this book are scientists (such as astronomer, biologist, and chemist), some are not (such as mathematician, philosopher, and monk). The important thing to remember is that all the people listed significantly helped shape the history of science in some way.Yes! If you look at this book’s copyright section (which is in small print), you’ll see the phrase “Young Adult Nonfiction.” Personally, I don’t like this phrase because it suggests that this book has been dumbed down. It definitely has not. This book is appropriate for older adults as well. Finally, the only problem I had with this book is that there are no references. Some of the references may be in the “But there’s more…” section for each biography, but I would have liked to have seen the references formally listed. In conclusion, this is the book to get to learn about those who have helped shape the history of science as we know it!!*As promised, here are the names of the people described above: (1) Hypatia of Alexandria (2) Ignaz Semmelweiss (3) Erwin Schrodinger (4) Michael Faraday (5) James Hansen(First published 2016; introduction; 50 biographies; main narrative 215 pages; index of names; acknowledgements; about the author)<>XXXXX

from my goodreads review: Get this essential book for your family discussions at the dinner table. Do you want your children to become interested in science and/or world history? Do you have an interest in the history of scientific thought and progress? The concise and well written material on 50 selected scientists covering the ages will enlighten, delight and possibly inspire further study. John Grant has written a beautifully seductive book that will encourage further study on any given topic that particularly interests students. I have the paperback book, and I think it is designed attractively with the perfect presentation for short discussions that could be followed up with further research. I am long past the age of teaching my children as they now teach me, but I know they would all have enjoyed the math and science and history contained in this very rich publication.
