I was a Ralph Kimball fan since the late 1990s. In 2012 I came across Lawrence's book. It clarified the process and dimensional design patterns very clearly. In addition, Lawrence was generous about sharing his materials and templates and providing ideas when I contacted him. If you are a BI professional who works directly with business stakeholders and who wants to collaborate effectively, this is the book for you. If you are a dimensional database modeler who wants to know more about dimensional design patterns and when to use them to provide the best product for your users, read this book. If you are a BI professional who simply wants to know what is possible in terms of a flexible, efficient and extensible design, read this book.

Good step-by-step guide for capturing data warehousing requirements and building dimensional models from these requirements through modelstorming (data modeling plus brainstorming) with business intelligence stakeholders. After explaining the difference between online transaction processing and data warehousing, and explaining high-level aspects of the 7Ws framework and the BEAM agile dimensional modeling method in the introductory chapter, the authors discuss modeling business events, business dimensions (the second longest chapter containing about 12% of the text), business processes, and star schemas, followed by design patterns for "who" and "what" (the longest chapter containing about 13% of the text), "when and where", "how many", and "why" and "how", corresponding to the 7Ws.Unlike some other technical texts, the authors really do walk the reader through the material one step at a time, with no skipping around between topics that many readers complain about elsewhere. Other than the step-by-step aspect of this book, another reason I found this book so well put together are the abundant, well-placed diagrams throughout that greatly add to the material. Although what initially got me interested in this text is the agile process surrounding data warehousing, the chapters on dimensional design patterns for performance, flexibility, and usability compliment well the book that I currently consider the best on the traditional data warehouse star schema, "Star Schema: The Complete Reference" by Christopher Adamson (see my review).In the chapter covering "who" and "what" design patterns, for example, the authors cover customer dimensions (particularly challenging because of their typical depth, width, and volatility) alongside the mini-dimension pattern, the sensible snowflaking pattern, swappable dimension patterns, customer relationships, and hierarchy maps, as well as employee dimensions alongside the hybrid slowly changing dimension (SCD) view pattern, the previous value attribute pattern, and the multi-valued hierarchy map pattern, followed by product and service dimensions alongside the multi-level dimension pattern and the parts explosion hierarchy map pattern. And the chapter covering "how" design patterns provides one of the best concise explanations of fact table types and fact types.The one potential issue with this book is that although its goal is agile data warehouse design, getting familiar with the BEAM (business event analysis and modeling) notation used throughout the author discussions might be a bit time prohibitive for teams comprised of more than a few individuals to become accustomed when using for the first time. While the second appendix at the back of the book provides effective short codes for event story and fact table types, dimension table types, general column codes, data types, key types, dimensional attribute types, and event detail and fact column types, some upfront initial team investment will almost certainly be involved for which an agile spike will be needed, and close attention to workability with stakeholders should be assessed. Well recommended overall.

Ideas and techniques that have only previously been described in long-winded and subjective prose, are re-examined and made precise and applicable. Applying the core notions from Scott Ambler's Agile Modeling, Gojko Adzic's Specification By Example, and Mike Cohn's User Stories Applied, along with the best of everything Kimball, et al, have ever had to say, the BEAM methodology guides and organizes the practitioner's thinking, providing the recipes and patterns necessary to consistently deliver quality models.

An amazing read. If Kimball's books answer the question "what" you are going to build, Lawrence's BEAM book covers the "how" far in depth and from a far more practical perspective. This is a bible on how to skillfully engage the business stakeholders in the arduous process of understanding their DW/BI expectations.Don't forget to also register at the author's website for very useful tools and templates.

First industry specific book that I felt was not a forced read for me. I've read large parts of the Kimball Desk Reference set :) and various others on the subject of modeling and managing projects of the BI/DW focus, but each felt like a text book compared to how well this has been written and distilled.I've had success in the past with a mentor that has insisted using spreadsheets to tease out data models for OLTP systems, and have found greater success in communicating and capturing designs with less technical audiences. Congratulations on formalizing that approach when Modeling Business Events! I immediately see how this will benefit the entire life-cycle.

I admit that I was a bit jaded about the true effectiveness of Agile and EDW (after all everyone seems to be jumping on the Agile bandwagon and using it as a buzzword). However, after reading this book, I now do see how Agile and EDW could work. It is not a silver bullet for eliminating re-coding or designing a data warehouse that will cover all future reporting needs but it should help in developing a robust, proactive design that anticipates future demand and designs for it.The BEAM* methodology alone was worth the "price of admission". It provides a manner to solicit and capture requirements (using Agile approaches of course) that makes is easier for stakeholders (people who will run and request reports) to articulate requirements. And then, a manner to translate them into Dimensional Models.

This book is not only good, but practical as well. It gives lots of good examples and the author is very willing to send you templates to help get you started. I held an introductory session with my data warehousing team and everyone is eager to give it a go. I tried a quick sample exercise and the team all got involved and started yelling out details for the 7 W's.

But my grandson does not want to talk about it. He explained the reason to his therapist: "I just don't care." His mother is on her death bed due to drugs/alcohol.I know "I don't care" is not the same as "It doesn't affect me." It affects us all. It is part of what makes us who we are.We need to make peace with whatever emotions it brings to us--even "I don't care." That's not easy for a young man in high school. I read HELLO KIDDO and hoped my grandson would read it too. I left it on the sofa table hoping he might pick it up on his own. When I finished it, I took it to him and before I could say anything, he says "I am not going to read it." I asked if he knew what it is about and he revealed that he had read the back cover. I left it with him and suggested he consider it because it is a really good book, starts a little slow (if you don't know the background--I heard the NPR interview) but soon picks up. It is basically "our story" -- as I am sure it is for many families.Thank you, Jarrett, for sharing your story in such a readable form. It is a beautiful work.How do we get it read by those who need it most -- the kids suffering through it? It's therapy for the grandparents too!

I received a digital ARC of this book in the spring, and I have been impatiently waiting for the official release since the day I downloaded it! I knew about Jarret's history from his incredible Tedtalk, but I was not quite prepared for all of the trauma and drama this man experienced because his mom was a heroin addict. But it is not all heartbreak and sadness, there is hope in knowing things will be ok because he is famous in the kidlit world! From his Lunch Lady graphic novel series to his picture books to the Jedi Academy series and so many more. This book is stunning and watching the creation of it on Instagram made me even more excited about having my own copy. If you have, know, or work with high schoolers, this is a must read, share, give, gift book. If you are an adult? It is for you too. I cannot say enough about how much I was moved by this book and how much I love it.

I loved this.I read well over 100 new graphic novels or comic trade paperbacks a year. I'm also a licensed social worker who specializes in addiction and I teach at Rutgers. I read about Jarrett Krosoczka's new book in either the NY Times or the Washington Post and ordered it immediately, because of my dual interests in comics and addiction.Despite the high praise and good reviews, I didn't expect much. So often, literature on addiction (books, plays, comics) misses the mark. Mr. Krosoczka nailed it. He really did. He should be incredibly pleased, and he deserves the praise that he has received for this. His mother was rarely around while he was growing up - he was raised by his maternal grandparents (his grandfather was particularly loving). When he was in junior high school, his grandparents told him that his mother was a heroin addict and that she had spent much or her life in and out of jail and treatment. It all made so much sense to him.He doesn't excuse his mother's use nor gloss it over. Because she isn't around, it is her absence that is felt more than her addiction, even though the absence is a byproduct of her heroin habit. Mr. Krosoczka felt awkward as a kid and didn't play sports. He used art to get attention and make friends. He had a number of encouraging teachers, a great childhood friend (Pat), and a loving extended family.That said, his grandparents were huge for him. He made a few mistakes with them, but he largely appreciated them, both then and now.As the book goes on, it's power increases. I found the final few pages to be incredibly moving.Bravo.

When I first read about this book, I knew I had to read it. I’m living this life as the grandparent. We adopted our granddaughter for the same reason Jarrett lived with Joe and Shirley. She’s 9 and knows why we have her. When she’s older, we’ll share this book with her. But for now, I’ll share it with my 8th graders and hope that it makes an impact in their lives.

To members of the national organization called RAPP ( Relatives as Parents Program), this is a book for you. I'll be using this book at the Brookdale national conference on Oct 26 in New Jersey for relatives who are raising children whose parents are not on the scene due to their drug world. This book is a support group all of its own, showing our children that they are not alone and look at how one person survived with dreams fulfilled. A book that can be used for many conversations among our children and those who are raising them. An imperfect world that can still offer hope and the humanities to our young.

My grandmother surprised me with this book and it was the BEST book I have ever read. Mainly because it was so relatable and when my teacher saw it on my desk, she started reading it too. The book is just straight up amazing and you might think the same.

Incredibly honest and real. Delves in to the issue of addiction and children who are being raised by grandparents due to the addictions of their parents. It also shows that the addicted parent can still care about and love the child. I'm thrilled to see this topic addressed as a graphic novel. As a high school English teacher, I can attest to the fact that my students NEED this book!!!!

This was the best, and most powerful, graphic novelI’ve ever read. The drawings are gorgeous and the story is so real. I love how it spans generations and it works in so many topics my students can relate to: domestic abuse, drug use, religion, imprisonment, etc.This is a true story, a genuine story, an important story.Can’t wait for so many of my kids to read it.

Even in fiction fantasy the author should do some historical research. It's obvious this author did little of that. Also she wrote the Highlanders speaking with a slight, not accurate,15th century brogue and in the next sentence they spoke like a 21st century American, very distracting. I wish I had not paid for this book since I deleted it half way through. The story line could have been a very good one but it just wasn't developed and all historical accuracy was ignored.

Loved this fourth book as much as the first three. Highly recommend it. Hope there will be a few more tales of the MacClaren clan.

Super Slow Burn RomanceI enjoy a good time travel romance, but the romantic part of the book was not as strong as I would have liked it to be.The book was definitely interesting in places. The heroine is transported from modern-day San Francisco to the 15th century Scotland. Apparently, she not the only woman who has been thus transported to this clan. As some women die in Scotland, a counterpart is pulled over from modern times to take her place. At the very beginning, the description of all the women who replaced the Scottish women was a little confusing because sometimes a woman was referred to by her Scottish name and sometimes by her modern name.The heroine has an eidetic memory, so she is able the help modernize the clan somewhat, providing a water filtration system, a rain gathering system, and some solid roofing techniques. She was very smart and had diverse knowledge (which didn’t seem wholly plausible even with her flawless memory). The romance was a super, super slow build. In fact, there are whole stretches where we don't really see the hero and the heroine together, and I didn't get the sense of a naturally building romance as we typically see in fiction. They had an instant attraction when she first landed in Scotland, but the whole romance angle never really came together for me.I'm a person who enjoys reading Scottish romance, but this one left me disappointed because of the lack of build-up in the romance.I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

With a headline as jumbled as the one above, I guess it is obvious, I REALLY liked this new time-travel, historical romance by Rebecca Preston! “HIGHLANDER SMITTEN” is an outstanding time-travel romance. While the book blurb does a fine job of describing the novel’s basic premise, it does not tell prospective readers about how well-written this entertaining historical romance truly is. With a slow burn of a start so readers can focus on the emerging characters, the plotline of “HIGHLANDER SMITTEN” starts to increase tension with a mystery, a moron, and a mess of epic proportions, or so Fiona thought. From that point on readers have to “hit the pages” with “feet” running as the action never stops. While “HIGHLANDER SMITTEN” is not the first book in the series, it is just as detailed and fresh as those which came before it but has an added dash of humor. I laughed, teared up and felt inspired by Fiona and her interminable will to make things better for herself, and then as she could for the entire MacClaran Clan. Donal has replaced Jamie Fraser in my all-time favorite Laird, and this novel is going into the FAVORITES collection on my Kindle. I voluntarily read an early copy of “HIGHLANDER SMITTEN” and this is my honest voluntary review. “HIGHLANDER SMITTEN” is a GREAT book and wonderful romantic entertainment. Quickly, get your copy today and see how Fiona improves the lives of the entire clan with her science! Happy pages! 😉

This is an interesting, romantic and entertaining story. Donal is bold, cheeky and protective. Fiona is brave, determined and smart. Fiona finds herself in the past, getting killed. Only it's not her, it's her doppelganger. Donal is racing to get to Fiona to save her and realizes right away what happened. At first Fiona tried to pretend it was a dream, then when she finally accepted that she really was in the past she proceeds to invent whatever she can to make life better for everyone. Donal is half in love with her immediately, and he subtly entices her to him. The new English lord wants Fi and is willing to blackmail her to get what he wants, but she's not the usual helpless female he's used to, and he ends up very disappointed and angry. Then the drama gets so much worse. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

When I started reading this, I didn’t realize it was the 4th book in the series. I think it works fine as a stand-alone but it was so much fun I’m going back to read the previous books.I love the possibilities of time travel. Here you have someone with knowledge of the past thrown back in time. Fiona finds herself back in the 15th century of her dreams with Donal MacLaren. Well developed characters and a great story line. The chemistry is amazing between the characters and I liked the action packed adventure they have.Fiona is an archeology student but discovers that science can’t explain everything. She can help the MacLaren clan and perhaps even Donal. Fast paced with angst, humor and a hot connection, with paranormal influences and characters you want to cheer on. (I voluntarily reviewed an ARC).

Fiona is an archaeology student but has had nightmares of Scottish Medieval fighting. On day she wakes up and has been transported back to the Scottish Medieval times of her dreams. She sees a woman that looks like her being killed. She sees Donal and knows he’s the killer. Donals woman that he loved was killed by church witch hunters. He went crazy and killed theses that killed her. He’s angry but then sees Fiona walk out of the mist. She explains whomshe is and that she’s from the future. Donal knows about time travel and knows that Fiona has to be kept hidden or she’ll end up like his dead love. But he sees the resemblance and is draw to her. Will they be together or will she return if possible to the future? I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Alison Griffiths is a professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Baruch College, City University of New York, and a member of the Ph.D. Program in Theater at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She is the author of Wondrous Difference: Cinema, Anthropology, and Turn-of-the-Century Visual Culture, which won the Katherine S. Kovács Award for the best published book in film and media studies. As an emerging museum professional I have found this book to be invaluable. It was the spring board for my thesis research and I continue to turn back to it for both reference and inspiration.If you're the kind of person who loves to read about arcane and obscure exhibition devices like panoramas, pepper's ghosts, or dioramas then you will love this book. If you want to know more about IMAX got it's start and the history of cinematic devices as both entertainment and teaching tools then you will love this book. If you work in a creative field and want inspiration for how to exhibit your work or to know more about how people in the museum world think and approach the presentation of media then you will love this book. It's a shame that more scholarly books that are this comprehensive can't also be as entertaining, but Griffiths manages to take a subject matter that is obscure at best and weaves wonder in to her reader- a wonder which she obviously has herself.

I'm a museologist and I made a PhD about the immersive exhibit and this is the book that I was waiting for...The book is so well organized :1) She uses a language very easy to understand;2) she always explains her logic at the begining of every chapter, so it's very easy to follow her.3) The references, the research, the citations are... golden bars! Congratulation for the Quebec exemples!What else to say, I just really shiver down MY spine during the reading.If you are interessed by : Museum, Immersion, visitor experience... It's a MUST!!!

I used to like Jessie from what I’ve see of her on tv and instagram, however, after reading this book I just find her very conceited. She writes about being bullied in high school for being “pretty” (which she mentions how tan and pretty she was several times) and then proceeds to go on about how she was on homecoming court TWICE and win homecoming queen. Rough life *eyeroll*.

I was a huge fan until I read this book. I found the beginning a little silly and contradictory - she’s talking about how she got bullied next to stunning pictures of herself in high school, and in the next breath says she got nominated for homecoming queen. At 2 separate schools. She bails on moving in with her friend after chasing Eric to Denver, even though her boy advice is to make the man work for it. She talks about forcing her friend to breastfeed, and then says it’s fine if you can’t. Overall, I thought she came off as a conceited know-it-all. I’m so disappointed - I really liked her before I read this book. She did not come off as real at all; rather, she seems like the type of woman that judges someone who doesn’t shave their legs and sleep in lingerie for their husband every single night. So unrealistic. On a positive note, I liked her workout tips and she looks beautiful.

I did not want to write this review, but this book has bothered me so much in the weeks since I’ve read it. First, Jessie could have really benefited from a co-author. Her writing was so simple, cold, and at some times just plain lazy. It felt like her publisher was pushing her to meet a deadline and she tried to cover too much ground too quickly.Next, I think what draws people to Jessie is that she is real. This book made me roll my eyes and hope that moms who read her words are not discouraged. I thought she embraced ‘real life’ but her views on marriage, breastfeeding, and nannies is so judgmental and naive.Lastly, the bullying piece was conveyed in such a shallow way that I can’t believe it made it in print.I came away with no real recipes, no lessons, no tips. I respect her attempt, but it was a huge miss for me. I hope Jessie takes some time to understand other people’s lives before writing a book full of shallow advice again.

I still love Jessie, but this book was a complete disappointment. For months the perception she put out on social media was that this was a cookbook. Imagine my surprise when I opened it up to find the handful of recipes she included buried WAY in the back. And what’s worse, most of the recipes include pre-made/boxed items. As a fan and a cook, I felt like the publicity around this book was EXTREMELY misleading.If you want a cookbook, do not get this book. If you want Jessie’s autobiography, this is the book for you.

Bought this book for the recipes. HA. The five she has at the back of the book are nothing special. Pretty much it is a box of rice with few extra ingredients that the box of rice probably suggested in the first place. SAVE your money.

I will preface this by saying I have paid to see her live, bought her (very short full priced) EP, purchased makeup from her and now this book which I preordered. Yes, I am a fan. Fans are not drones so here is my honest review. I genuinely like her singing voice and think she has a spunky attitude. One that is clearly infectious and charming! However, her mother’s voice came across in the majority of the book especially the parts that she shared about her upbringing. The southern colloquialisms and the classy, well spoken demeanor Karen exudes in her posts and on the show showed through. It was clear she had some help from mom writing this book. The book itself read more as a memoir. Her take away was that dreams can come true, so don’t dream small. However, not everyone has a parent who can drive them back and forth to Nashville and not entertain the idea of a formal education as a backup, or a pro athlete husband who literally takes them from the brink of working at a makeup counter to riches in 3 months. This is all after she dates “many” “formidable” men (quoted from a paragraph in the book that sounded a bit grandiose?)The lifestyle portion was minimal and the recipe portion was a let down. All of us fans were hoping for things she hadn’t shared on Instagram. Also a shake she said on live morning TV that Eric taught her to make (banana and protein powder?)That was a little disappointing after the anticipation she stirred on IG regarding further recipes. That all felt misleading.Overall, the book is good for a teen crowd-not mid twenties, as her dating advice is a little immature for anyone 25+. Think; a lot about looks and being chased and not a ton about confidence stemming from intuition or intelligence.I appreciate that she stated in the end that she is grateful for her fans. Without Eric and the show she wouldn’t have gained the platform she has now as we all took notice after ‘game on.’I know her cute personality is what has encouraged me spend the aforementioned money on her House of Blues show, eyeshadow palette and book..Lastly, I hope she gains momentum again with singing full time not part time as she really is talented. The book however... 3 stars for being misleading. I am sure she will come out with a full cook book soon so I would save the cash for that as this is quite minimal recipe wise.

I bought this book because I follow Jessie on Instagram and she posts some delicious recipes. I found her book to be from an extremely naive perspective, not encouraging women to get an education or focus on their career but rather be subservient to their husband. Very disappointing in 2018...I honestly worry about the young woman who look up to Jessie and read this book.

I can’t believe how many negative comments I have read. All the haters out there need to look inward and really find out why you’re being so negative. I found her book to be very light and easy to read. For goodness sakes she’s not a writer! It’s a biography, not Hamlet! Women are supposed to empower each other right? So then quit the hating! I think Jessie is fabulous and that is one of the reasons we all admire her. If all you keyboard warriors think this low of her, then why did you purchase the book? Also the hating on her recipes is ridiculous! She’s a home cook not f-ing Ina Garten lol. Love the book Jessie! It’s a must buy for her real fans!
