I used to like Jessie from what I’ve see of her on tv and instagram, however, after reading this book I just find her very conceited. She writes about being bullied in high school for being “pretty” (which she mentions how tan and pretty she was several times) and then proceeds to go on about how she was on homecoming court TWICE and win homecoming queen. Rough life *eyeroll*.

I was a huge fan until I read this book. I found the beginning a little silly and contradictory - she’s talking about how she got bullied next to stunning pictures of herself in high school, and in the next breath says she got nominated for homecoming queen. At 2 separate schools. She bails on moving in with her friend after chasing Eric to Denver, even though her boy advice is to make the man work for it. She talks about forcing her friend to breastfeed, and then says it’s fine if you can’t. Overall, I thought she came off as a conceited know-it-all. I’m so disappointed - I really liked her before I read this book. She did not come off as real at all; rather, she seems like the type of woman that judges someone who doesn’t shave their legs and sleep in lingerie for their husband every single night. So unrealistic. On a positive note, I liked her workout tips and she looks beautiful.

I did not want to write this review, but this book has bothered me so much in the weeks since I’ve read it. First, Jessie could have really benefited from a co-author. Her writing was so simple, cold, and at some times just plain lazy. It felt like her publisher was pushing her to meet a deadline and she tried to cover too much ground too quickly.Next, I think what draws people to Jessie is that she is real. This book made me roll my eyes and hope that moms who read her words are not discouraged. I thought she embraced ‘real life’ but her views on marriage, breastfeeding, and nannies is so judgmental and naive.Lastly, the bullying piece was conveyed in such a shallow way that I can’t believe it made it in print.I came away with no real recipes, no lessons, no tips. I respect her attempt, but it was a huge miss for me. I hope Jessie takes some time to understand other people’s lives before writing a book full of shallow advice again.

I still love Jessie, but this book was a complete disappointment. For months the perception she put out on social media was that this was a cookbook. Imagine my surprise when I opened it up to find the handful of recipes she included buried WAY in the back. And what’s worse, most of the recipes include pre-made/boxed items. As a fan and a cook, I felt like the publicity around this book was EXTREMELY misleading.If you want a cookbook, do not get this book. If you want Jessie’s autobiography, this is the book for you.

Bought this book for the recipes. HA. The five she has at the back of the book are nothing special. Pretty much it is a box of rice with few extra ingredients that the box of rice probably suggested in the first place. SAVE your money.

I will preface this by saying I have paid to see her live, bought her (very short full priced) EP, purchased makeup from her and now this book which I preordered. Yes, I am a fan. Fans are not drones so here is my honest review. I genuinely like her singing voice and think she has a spunky attitude. One that is clearly infectious and charming! However, her mother’s voice came across in the majority of the book especially the parts that she shared about her upbringing. The southern colloquialisms and the classy, well spoken demeanor Karen exudes in her posts and on the show showed through. It was clear she had some help from mom writing this book. The book itself read more as a memoir. Her take away was that dreams can come true, so don’t dream small. However, not everyone has a parent who can drive them back and forth to Nashville and not entertain the idea of a formal education as a backup, or a pro athlete husband who literally takes them from the brink of working at a makeup counter to riches in 3 months. This is all after she dates “many” “formidable” men (quoted from a paragraph in the book that sounded a bit grandiose?)The lifestyle portion was minimal and the recipe portion was a let down. All of us fans were hoping for things she hadn’t shared on Instagram. Also a shake she said on live morning TV that Eric taught her to make (banana and protein powder?)That was a little disappointing after the anticipation she stirred on IG regarding further recipes. That all felt misleading.Overall, the book is good for a teen crowd-not mid twenties, as her dating advice is a little immature for anyone 25+. Think; a lot about looks and being chased and not a ton about confidence stemming from intuition or intelligence.I appreciate that she stated in the end that she is grateful for her fans. Without Eric and the show she wouldn’t have gained the platform she has now as we all took notice after ‘game on.’I know her cute personality is what has encouraged me spend the aforementioned money on her House of Blues show, eyeshadow palette and book..Lastly, I hope she gains momentum again with singing full time not part time as she really is talented. The book however... 3 stars for being misleading. I am sure she will come out with a full cook book soon so I would save the cash for that as this is quite minimal recipe wise.

I bought this book because I follow Jessie on Instagram and she posts some delicious recipes. I found her book to be from an extremely naive perspective, not encouraging women to get an education or focus on their career but rather be subservient to their husband. Very disappointing in 2018...I honestly worry about the young woman who look up to Jessie and read this book.

I can’t believe how many negative comments I have read. All the haters out there need to look inward and really find out why you’re being so negative. I found her book to be very light and easy to read. For goodness sakes she’s not a writer! It’s a biography, not Hamlet! Women are supposed to empower each other right? So then quit the hating! I think Jessie is fabulous and that is one of the reasons we all admire her. If all you keyboard warriors think this low of her, then why did you purchase the book? Also the hating on her recipes is ridiculous! She’s a home cook not f-ing Ina Garten lol. Love the book Jessie! It’s a must buy for her real fans!

I fell in love with viewing stars and planets 50+ years ago but grew frustrated with the problems: halos around stars, fuzzy views of planets, difficulty tracking objects in the night sky. And collimating the 'scope! Too much. So I searched for a good book to help me and this is the one that really fit the bill.Harrington knows his stuff. He explains it very, very well, and the book is organized in a manner that allowed me to grasp the points of telescopes, binoculars, eyepieces, and mounts. I let me to understand why focal length, power, eye relief, etc. are important and yet do not need to put me off. There are tables to help me quickly look at what matters to help my viewing experience. And he not only dealt with particular brands, using both frank discussions of products, clarifying types of telescopes and binoculars and other equipment, combined with his personal viewing experiences and reviews for a major astronomic viewing magazine. Perfect.I can now see the reasons for my difficulties and the solutions. I had been using a Bausch & Lomb 10X35 binoculars for looking in the sky at night, and it was frustrating. I spent only a hundred bucks more for a pair of Pentax binoculars that are wonderful, and I see so much more! I will also be able to get better use out of my two reflector telescops now that I understand the equipment better, and there are a couple of reasonably priced accessories I'll get, such as a better finder-scope.I didn't want something that would make it all more difficult for me, and this book gave the breadth of information and level of analysis I needed. Perfect!

I basically bought this book to get current on the latest gear, it fills the bill in every way as far as that goes with tons of pertinent and useful data to help a person decide where to go with their interest. I had a very high end telescope a few years ago, but it wasn't very portable, and very few people were willing to go through the ordeal of getting to dark and then setting up and observing quite far from home base! Recently I aquired a fixer upper Newtonian and wanted to fit it out a little better than usual for more casual and portable viewing. This book was perfect for exactly what I needed. It re-introduced me to the good, better and best gear, and made me realize that even a smaller, well set up scope could get the job done very well. I highly recommend the book to anyone starting out or re-entering the hobby after a hiatus. Solid, usefull and current info as long as you get the latest edition!!

Oh yeah. This book saved me from an expensive purchase I would not have been happy with.Learned enough to make a good decision on purchasing a (actually two) telescopes(s).I was very confused getting back into astronomy and looking at all the choices and reviews. Previous telescopes were department store types and after reading this book, it was not surprising I gave up the hobby for 30 years!I recommend this book prior to making ANY telescope purchase by the beginning astronomer.

Excellent book! This is the second book I am reading before making a telescope purchase. There is much more a telescope than I thought there was and this book goes into the necessary detail I need to understand before I make the correct purchase. I would recommend this book as the second book to read before making a purchase if you are a novice like me.

As a newcomer to astronomy, I have read 'Nightwatch', 'Turn Left at Orion', and this book. 'Nightwatch' provides some good advice on buying your first telescope. 'Star Ware', however, is a much more comprehensive guide to telescopes and telescope accessories. Take the time to read it and you will be rewarded with a wealth of information that will enable you to make informed decisions on what telescope is right for you and what else you will need to buy. My only criticism is that in an attempt to be comprehensive it provides almost too much information - a dizzying array of manufacturers for one thing. Also, I have the Kindle edition and I think for reference books like this I'd rather have the print version. But that's just me. Anyway, good telescopes aren't cheap and this book will help you make a good choice. Well worth the money.

This book is very easy to read, and extremely helpful if you are in the market for a telescope. The types of instruments available, and which ones are good for viewing which objects are all easily explained. Which eye pieces? Which mounts? Which manufacturers? The author doesn't dumb down the subject but presents the important specifications for intelligent buying in a manner that all can understand. Ultimately, he leaves that to you, but it really did make me a better consumer. I'm glad I spent a few bucks for the book not only for the well presented info but also because it was an interesting read. Thanks Mr. Harrington.

There are a number of books out there that cover available equipment for Amateur Astronomy. However, I haven't found any that cover this area as in depth as this book. The Author, Phil Harrington has certainly done his research, and brings this information to the reader in an easily understood way. I first bought this book in 2006 and found some of the information to be a little dated at that time. When I saw that there was going to be an updated version coming out, I knew I would be purchasing it. I purchased the updated version and it wasn't at all lacking. At the time of it's release (4/2007) it is current with regards to available equipment for the Amateur Astronomer. This book is easy to read and understand. When I am looking to purchase a new piece of equipment, Starware is the first book I grab for the information I need.

I got this for a 3rd grade book report. It presented the information in an interesting way and provided plently of photographs to keep a child's interest. I enjoyed it and learned a lot as well. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a quick biography of Neil Armstrong.

Leadership in country after country fell to the most ruthless and corrupt, and societies declined into truly horrible circumstances characterized by crumbling infrastructure, deepened poverty, wars, atrocities, and AIDS. Often self-serving interventions by outsiders, including even some aid organizations, only made matters worse. The really amazing aspect of African culture that the author portrays is the attitude of hope that permeates African societies living in circumstances that we in the West would consider unbearable. In the midst of incredible suffering, Africans retain their dignity and their love of family. This book, which is best read in small doses, leaves one with the feeling that if only Africa can put its political house in order, significant progress, maybe even miraculous progress, will be made.

Dowdens' insight and knowledge of Africa are impressive. Having traveled to most of the countries in Africa as an author, I found his account accurate–a quality hard to find in some writers. His criticisms of 'big men', the militaristic Americans, and the Chinese gave me additional insight into the tragedy of Africans against the world. It's pitiful the African leaders care so little about their nations, preferring to bank away AID money in European bank accounts.If you have an interest in knowing the truth about American aid into Africa, this is a must read. I found this book to be highly engaging.

Has different parts of history that influence the common culture, shows the differences in similarities that Americans like to generalize as "Africa" rather than the vastness and diversity of all the different lands and people. Highly recommend for anyone serious about learning about the different countries.

Africa is a latticework of interwoven realities, cultures, and narratives. Richard takes the reader into the hidden, the dark and the colorful until one tapestry is revealed - realistic hopefulness. Being a missionary and social entrepreneur, one gets overwhelmed and discouraged by the pace and enormous challenges in Africa. I could not put this book down... it challenged me to regroup, rethink, and work harder to build deep and meaningful relationships with all this diversity Africa offers.

Got this book as a Christmas present and am presently reading it. Love it as I have myself traveled to many regions of Africa. Gives me fresh new insight to an extraordinary continent and its people. Wish I could read in one sitting as it is a page turner. Very interesting how the author explains Africa's past history and draws the reasons and some answers to the continent's many challenges and struggles. I'm sure to fall in love with Africa all over again once I read the entire book. Wondering and longing for where my next travels to Africa will take me.

Dowden's knowledge of Africa excellent. His criticisms of colonialists, "big men', Chinese and militaristic Americans is spot on. But, what shines is the resilience and hope in the face of hopelessness of the long-suffering Africans.The vast amount of aid money that now sits in accounts in Europe and the Caribbean due to the greed of African leaders is tragic for donors and target recipients alike. Dowden knows that only Africans can determine how Africa works.

Absolutely a must read. Very informative, enlightening, and made me love Africa even more.

Africa, called the dark continent because of our lack of knowledge. So many countries and so much turmoil. This book not only touches on some history but ta;lks much about the people and how they respond to the turmoil and their lust for life in the midst of all of the turmoil (and death and destruction) and their incredible ability to forgive. It shows their ability to sing and rejoice in all of the circumstances and yes, it certainly shows the depth of their sufferings. An excellent writing style that is not dry history but alive in its telling.

Great collection. I wish it had more postcards...I bought this to mail out but now I want to keep all of them.

This is a gorgeous book of postcards showing New Orleans Cemeteries. Such lovely buildings, monuments, and decadent ruins. I toured the cemeteries when I visited New Orleans and likes the architecture of the cemeteries. They are truly cities of the dead. Beautiful postcards that can be removed and mailed if you wish.

I use these for Postcrossing.com, good selection that gives people in other countries a glimpse of New Orleans that they might not otherwise see. The cemeteries are one of my favorite things about NOLA and I like to share that with others.

The postcards are excellent for the value. They come in a book. They are perferated on the sides however you can use a paper cut and remove that everyone I have sent to has certainly enjoyed them. Thank you

I've learned a lot. I can teach this to my granddaughter. And, the ideas were interesting.

What a great book for any young parent or, a parent to be. The book gives one insight and guideance into how to raise one's child to think for themself and solve problems. And, as the book states, be independent and develop self confidence. Thank you.

Teaching Kids to Think is a well writen book that touches on all aspects of parenting in todays fast pace and advanced technology. Great advice on how to help our children to solve problems on their own. A book that has good advice for every parent.
