I had never tried making lotions before, but after becoming aware of all the harmful ingredients in commercial products and the outrageous prices for 'natural' products, I thought I would give it a try. This book gives you the perfect formula, works everytime, and I can add whatever I like as additives. At first I had difficulty finding the emulsifiers listed in the book, but they have become readily availiable and at reasonable prices. I find them at the hearbie. Read the book several times and ensure you understand the process, I convert the metric measurements to ounces by using resources on the internet to make like a little easier. It doesn't take long to make about 16 ounces of creams or lotions and I've even made hair conditioners as well. The title is misleading as making essential oils is not the only information this book offers. The emulsifiers used in the book are some the most non-toxic I've been able to locate that are availiable to the home lotion maker. I've used beeswax to make lotions before but this is too greasy for my taste, this book provides you with a way to make non-greasy, commercial quality skin care products, quite easily. I don't have a hotplate, I just use the kitchen stove and measuring cups in pans of water. I use a stick blender for the initial mixing, but then revert to a wisk as the stick blender adds too much air into the creams. I love this book and highly recommed it to anyone who wants to make a commercial quality lotion or cream at a fraction of the cost of store prices, that can be customized to your personal needs.

I love the book and all of the details in the book. My only complaint is that some of the suppliers (such as the one for the distiller kit that is used in this book) no longer carry the items that are described! That was disappointing! But otherwise the book is great!

Look no further this is IT. I bought this as a companion to my new still and would have been lost without it. Clear, concise and applicable to the process. It reads and functions just like a cookbook!

This book is excellent and thorough..however you almost have to have a certain level of chemistry knowledge to put any of it to use.

I bought this book to learn how to distill oils. it goes through a lot of info on the many different types of extraction processes and equipment involved.

Good but goes over my head!! Needs someone who knows a whole lot more than I do...lol

Great book, explains in lay man’s terms chemical procedures of distillation various products like for example essential oils.

A very informative book!Now I just need a steam distiller to make my own essentials. I doubt I will use the press/oil method as I am not that committed and can purchase quality jasmine oil at my local health store.

Here, I am going to proffer what I think is the real theme of this work—but I am a data scientist and not a English major so my understanding might be completely erroneous.The title The Wife’s Tale is originally one of the Canterbury Tales in which a knight is sent on a quest to discover what women want. He finally achieves an answer in learning that they want mastery of their husbands.This Wife’s Tale begins with Yetemegnu, the real life protagonist, being as far from mastery over her husband as possible—she is a child bride. Symbolically, she is not even permitted to hear a beloved drum at her wedding because of an Ethiopian superstition.Even as she grows into a young woman with children of her own she is completely lorded over by her husband—amidst being forced to stay inside her house and beatings she is hardly able to even claim mastery of herself.All the while she prays to the supreme image of womanhood, Mary the mother of Jesus. According to tradition, Mary was entrusted to the Jewish temple in childhood making her Yetemegnu’s companion in not having the normal joys of youth. Like Yetemegnu she is married at an early age. And like Yetemegnu her part in life is largely defined by her relation to her offspring.Yet, as decades pass and Ethiopia experiences an Italian invasion, a return to monarchy and then Marxism, Yetemegnu begins to assert more control over her life. Her husband is first imprisoned and then dies leaving her with responsibility for the household. Her children grow up and lead modern lives in choosing their own spouses, personal careers and emigration to first world countries.After living nearly a century, Yetemegnu passes away and is given an elaborate funeral with hundreds of priests, government officials and the leading men of her region of Ethiopia. And, at last, a drum is played. She has finally attained the sovereignty over men denied to her in life.St. Mary too, in Christian tradition, was assumed into heaven where she became queen and mother of all the living. Catholic and Orthodox Christians recognize her as the saint of saints and implore her intercession more than any other personage save her son.Here, the parallel reaches its culmination. Yetemegnu, who throughout the book weaves her speech and life with that of St. Mary’s, now achieves, paradoxically, the relief from servitude that followed her during her earthly life. The title of The Wife’s Tale could not be more apt.Again, this is somewhat of a speculative interpretation—and may be over bold from someone with neither a degree in literature or religious studies—but the way in which the author inserts passages from the life of Mary into the book and rather overtly draws these parallels makes me confident this interpretation is consonant with the intention of the author.Yes, the language is poetic and visceral and the book is set in a time and place few in the West understand. But the book is not called A Woman of Ethiopia but The Wife’s Tale. The major theme is a traditional and religious woman’s quest to grow out of extreme servitude into a person who is master of her own life and the lives of those entrusted to her.It is this different but interesting take on feminism that makes this so much more than just a trip to an exotic place. Whether one agrees with this type of feminism or not it is important that feminist voices are heard not only from first world countries. A Wife’s Tale is an unrecognized vision of what feminism can be.

I love the way the author connects the reader with the various aspects of Ethiopia and Ethiopian culture. The differences may be significant, but she puts us into that world and I soon felt connected to the author's grandmother and her family. And I learned so much, not just about the main character but about the history and culture of Ethiopia! I discovered how little I knew, and it was a truly wonderful experience!

I didn't realize until the end that the book was written by the main character's grand-daughter and that it was a memoir of this family. It was written from the vantage point of the Ethiopian "wife". Offered valuable insights into that culture. I read it on a kindle but in paperback, one would have known about the glossary at the end.

I read this in preparation for a reunion of Peace Corps volunteers who'd served in Ethiopia. The book evoked memories of Ethiopian highland culture that was shared by people in a different tribe elsewhere in the country. I found it helpful in providing details about the events following the overthrow of Haile Selassie. The author did a nice job of blending her grandmother's memories with her own.

A first rate chronicle of lesser known country and its travails during the middle of the 20th century, written as a first person experience by the author's grandmother

The author spent 5 years on cruise ships. My wife and I have been on several cruises and really noticed the sparkling white uniforms of the officers but also noticed the workers, painting and repairing wearing overalls. These workers are mainly Phillipino as are the those who clean the rooms, officers mainly white and male. The author first worked as a drummer in the pit band. He loved the cheap booze in the crews mess but room conditions were very spartan and as a worker you couldn't walk among the passengers or enjoy the same food. Crew food was unmentionable, indescribable and unpalatable. At that time crew were allowed to smoke in their rooms but as a non smoker he often found smoke drifting in to his room. Most times crew rooms did not have a ventilation system and locations were near very noisy machines so that ear plugs were a necessity. Crew members did have a slop room, where they could purchase instant foods when they often couldn't stomach the crew mess. He apparently loved the ship's milk, not sure why and one time he and his girlfriend ate cereal morning, noon and supper. My wife and I on cruises often wandered in the art auctions, never had free champagne (which apparently was bad plonk). He and his girlfriend became art auctioneers, and thus became officers, special privileges such as eating better meals and having a better room. They did get commission on what they sold. Greta his girlfriend bought a special gavel to use. His boss told him how to size up people by what they wore, and not to waste time on those people just wanting free drinks. The last ship they served on was a "ship of darkness". The did not get a special room or special considerations. They did visit Venice and Rome and went on a special donkey ride. This book is a special behind the scene look at cruise lines, and that all is not glamorous for those workers who make our lives special when we come aboard for our cruises. Very recommended.

We are cruisers. My wife and I have been cruising about 65 years and have been on almost every ship that sails or has sailed. Started on the QE 1 and the original Queen Mary in 1951. Lots of change has taken place, and this book is a fun read for the first part of it. I have been reading a lot of books written by frequent cruisers to get some insight into what I've signed up for. And then I run across books by Joshua Kinser. He's a former ship musician and art dealer. I was really intrigued to get a behind the scenes taste of life aboard cruise ships.Boy, did his books pay off!I won't write any spoilers here, and you really may not believe me if I retold some of his stories, anyway, but I came away with some eye opening revelations. I had no idea!Though Mr. Kinser didn't write just to lay bare the crappy conditions cruise crew exist under, I'm sure going to be a lot nicer and more respectful of any crew I meet on my cruise.These books are definitely entertaining as well. Joshua Kinser is a masterful story teller. I enjoyed every story in his Chronicles of a Cruise Ship Crew Member.What are you waiting for? Not exactly what I had expected/hoped for. After going on my first cruise I was interested what it would be like to work on a cruise ship. This is written from a musician's perspective, which isn't exactly what I was looking for. The writer almost has an attitude of "woe is me, my life is so hard" but then turns around and talks about all the fun stuff he gets to do. I don't appreciate some of the language in the book. Overall, it was a mildly interesting read, but I wouldn't recommend it if someone were to ask. I still want to find a book written from a different perspective.

My Star Wars fanatic has spent hours, if not days or weeks, learning about the most obscure details of the galaxy. I don't know when knowing the difference between a nexu and and acklay will come in handy in her life, but when that day comes... ready she will be.

I won't go too far into the basics of the book as there are plenty good reviews here that do that. I will say if you can only have one book go give you information on all sorts of details in the Star Wars movies universe this is the only book you need. It covers characters, events, equipment, weapons, ships, and the background histories of all this stuff too. It's a single source for fleshing out the Star Wars mythos and putting you further into the fantasy George Lucas creates so many decades ago.This book is essentially collecting the pages of all four previous Star Wars Visual Dictionaries into a single volume. Great way to save space on the bookshelf or coffee table, that's for sure. Also a great way to save a little money for you first time buyers by getting just one book instead of three. The one thing about the book (or rather books, as they did it too) is that some characters are on every chapter. Mainly R2-D2... he gets these giant splash pages on every chapter. I mean I love the little, but c'mon!Now between you and me there is more to this collection than reprinting the four previous books into one. There is extra information in here too. Now the chapters covering Episodes one and two are identical to the previous books with the exception of losing the pictures that were on the inside cover and title page. The chapter that covers episode three has an additional 12 pages on top of all the original pages (again... minus the side-photos). Now I never got the original Dictionary on the original trilogy, but I can confirm there are at least four additional pages of content from that section.I'm sure this volume has ticked off devoted fans who bought the previous books, but if you ask me it can still be a worthwhile investment. I'm not just talking about the 16+ extra pages, but the smaller shelf space as well. Think of it this way. Most of you had a few years to enjoy those other Dictionary books before this came out so in the words of an accountant you have already built value from the depreciation. Even if you bought a previous book or three this would still be a great buy (sell your old books, save that book space).I had three of the four previous books and I am glad I have the new volume. This book is a good buy no matter how you slice it.

This is one of the best books written on Star Wars. It covers a very high level of detail concerning the two triologies, presented in the order of movie chronology. Episodes I-III are presented in separate sections, while Episodes IV-VI are combined into one larger section.This book is mostly a rundown of characters. Major characters are offered two pages and/or cutout sections, while more minor characters are given very decent amounts of page space. Besides characters, you learn a great deal about every single weapon and ship used in the six movies, as well as costumes, other equipment, planets visited and more. I never knew such high level of deatil existed on the character backgrounds and weapons, let alone having been studied. It is amazing to know the exact equipment set of each storm trooper, clone trooper, Jedi, as well as R2-D2, vulture droids, you name it, and you will find it.I have never been a huge fan of the expanded Star Wars universe, so I very much appreciate the decision of the authors to concentrate on the canon movie trilogies. You see some tidibts as part of the elaboration of character backgrounds that contain information from expanded universe (for example, Boba Fett having survived the Sarlacc pit), but this is never over-done, and there appears to be a principle to keep most everything within the canon universe. It is chock-full of information and therefore takes a while to finish, but it is a great read, with fun information and very high-resolution photos. Highly recommended and addictive!

My son is a Star Wars fanatic, and he LOVES this book. It is very informative and since he hasn’t seen the pg13 Star Wars films yet (he is 8), he now can feel well informed about the characters in the movies he hasn’t yet seen!

I bought this for my 6 year old who is a Star Wars FREAK. He sat down with this book immediately and has not really stopped looking at it since. He can barely read, but he loves examining all of the characters, and the way they are broken down and labeled is very exciting to him. He likes to see everything that he's seen in the movies, and video game, in full detail.I can't comment on how this book is similar or different to any other book, but I can say, it's very detailed, it covers a lot of information and describes alot of the relationships and uses of the characters & items. My 6 year old can identify way more than I can. This book is well set up, with loads of information and LOTS AND LOTS of details full color high quality photos which is just what we were looking for.Good luck!

I bought this book last Christmas (2008) for my two young sons (5 and 4). They have spent the past year pouring over this book, debating facts about the characters, and writing their own stories to compliment the illustrations in the book. They haven't seen all of the Star Wars films (only A New Hope) but are thrilled by the detailed illustrations and descriptions of the characters, the far away galaxies, and of course the weapons and ships. This is their favorite Star Wars book. As an adult fan of Star Wars I find it is full of great information and back stories about the characters. My husband and I have found answers to many of our Star Wars questions here. This is a great reference and a really fun book.FYI, another great Star Wars reference is [...]. Great fun!

The photos are sub par. Too bad we weren't able to view some of the photos before purchasing otherwise I wouldnt have purchased.Purchased 3 years ago, just getting around to writing a review found it collecting dust. Disappointed.

Most of the kids in these images are either young or older teens. I don't see too many that relate to my own children's ages and so I wasn't inspired to race out and practice posing techniques from this book with my kids. There are some group shots of kids, but the kids are all very close in age...what do you do when they aren't? That or there's quite a bit of age between the kids...like a little kid and a baby for instance, or a teen and a little kid. Additionally, poses of groups of kids tend to feature the same way. Either that or if the kids appear similar in age to my own, they are all very different in height so getting a dynamic image with varying head heights is easy. What do you do when your subjects are both close in age and height?!?!? I own all of the 500 poses series and this is my least favorite.

If you are a beginning photographer - this is a must have!Ideas for poses is sometimes hard to come by, however this book will get the gears of your creativity cranking.I would also suggest this for any photographer to have on their shelf- for a just in case session.

Not impressed at all by the poses presented in the book. A few great photos but most of them were just ok. I am not a professional photographer, I just love taking pictures of my kids so I got this to find more useful poses for my pictures. After looking through the entire book, I have founded it totally useless. There is not a single pose in there I haven't tried or done with my kids before. I would not waste money on this.

Purchased the entire series of this collection. The photos are useful for giving you pose examples to show your clients in a photo shoot.

Just the thing for boosting creativity in poses when you get in a rut. Beautiful images to get the ideas flowing. If you are looking for a how to book this isn't it. This is for photographers who know lighting and camera settings.

I was hoping for well illustrated tutorials. The book is a picture book of decent to excellent examples with a modicum of teaching. It could have been a much better book with more inside secrets and tips.

This book also gives some good ideas that one may never think of. Certainly sparks my memory banks of something new that a Photographer can do.I highly recommend these books.

This is a ~2500 year old book on history that was criticized right after it came out. It's often viewed as the less serious, less academic, inferior work when compared to Thucydides - the author who provided the template for future historians. I do think that reading it with a map of the ancient world would be helpful if you're not familiar with the landscape, but other than that, just go along with it.

How can we possibly describe Herodotus with the kind of categories presented here by amazon? Impossible Most of the times Herodotus narrates what other people did. Sometimes he describes countries, regions, areas. Sometimes he gives his personal belief and therefore speaks in the first person: I. Everybody should read the Histories by Herodotus. Herodotus was the Father of History. Furthermore, what he narrates shows us that all the problems we are facing in this world right now originated long time ago. Herodotus is the witness. In addition, many stories that have been deemed being lies have been since then proved true. Herodotus always states that for him the stories are or seem far fetched but he relates them to us, faithfully as he has heard them been narrated to him. I wish historians nowadays would be as honest as Herodotus was in his time.

Great translation. I needed to purchase an ancient world geography book to go with this... but now it's a pleasure reading The Histories which many times are more folk tale - even tall tale - than actual, bonafide history. But often, that's all he had to go on... the stories the Persians were telling themselves... what people who had traveled in Egypt saw, etc. Great quality on the binding, pages, etc.

How is it that I have never read this classic. And the notes included with this version were extremely helpful. Herodtus has a great way of telling stories and I like how he jumps from topic to topic while explaining history. I felt like I was at my grandpa's feet hearing about the good old days with some lessons on life thrown in. I should have read this years ago!!!

Any "period" piece will be a difficult read (at least, for me) but to understand history I believe you have to be willing to read the material that was written at the time. All of this has to be done with an understanding that the writers were not, on average, objective and the material had to be written with, at least, an eye on the power brokers who might read the material. Still, necessity does not imply easy.

I thought that reading Herodotus would be daunting, but Mr. Waterfield's translation so far is making it fun to read. The prose is very accessible, which makes this history very intriguing and enjoyable to read. In a nut shell Herodotus writes about the causes of the ancient war between the Greek world and the Persian empire.

Excellent translation -- makes a prodigious work accessible in modern English. Herodotus provides the historical context for much of classical epics & plays, so it is interesting & illuminating. A very useful companion piece -- like the Oxford Companion to Classical Literature.

This is not an easy read, but if you have the patience to make it through the introduction and initial chapters, you will find a fascinating tale. Herodotus is a gifted story teller. Even in his digressions- and there are many throughout the book- the descriptions of the lands, the people, the battles, customs, offer rich detail and insight to what it was like to be living 2500 years ago during the Greek and Persian wars. Oftentimes reading this book, it reminded me of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, and made me wonder if George Lucas and J.R.R. Tolkien were inspired by Herodotus' The Histories." In so many ways we have changed, but in also so many ways, we still share much in common with our ancient ancestors.
