This book details the author's somewhat piecemeal journey from Jinja in Uganda, the purported source of the Nile, tracing as best as could be done under the political and geographical circumstances the course of the Nile until it discharges into the Mediterranean. The author's writing style is typical for a journalist, trying to maintain a sort of forced neutrality of opinion about the characters he meets and countries through which he passes. This has the effect of lessening to impact on the reader of the trials and hardship the author undoubtedly passed through which in turn makes for somewhat bland (ie boring) reading. I honestly struggled to get through this one, my strong interest in the region notwithstanding. 3/5 stars.

I have to admit that it took me a few weeks to pick up this book. My husband bought it and I was thinking "boy book" (I tend to read fiction and memoir). But I did pick it up and then I couldn't put it down. Yes, this is a book about a very troubled part of the world. Yes, it introduces some geopolitical and environmental problems that seem intractable. But what I didn't expect was the sense of humor and wide-open Experience with a capital "E." Morrison takes the reader to a part of the world where few will travel and he gives not just a lay of the land or a catalog of woe but a sense of the people -- as individuals. It wasn't until I was reading "The Black Nile" that I realized most of what I know about Africa and Africans is broad, general, removed. Faraway. This book is individual, specific, upclose. Vivid. One of the jacket reviewers uses that word and I can't think of a better one. A truly excellent book.

What a terrific and enjoyable read.

I was a little disappointed with the author, having thought that he would have been more prepared for this trip than he was. Perhaps I was spoiled by Dark Star Safari which is a great book. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the insights he gave on South Sudan.

Wow! This guy did hard traveling and lived to tell. Very interesting look into the lesser known parts of the Nile.

Very informative and entertaining book. I learned a lot about the upper NIle . The author was brave to take this sometimes dangerous journey.

I started out enjoying this audiobook but I'm afraid it just could not hold my attention after about halfway through.

A nearly perfect book--entertaining from start to finish, well written, nicely edited and full of great scenes and vivid, larger-than-life characters.

This is a great book for young fantasy readers. The characters are well developed and the story exciting from start to finish. The four "spirit animals" were described in the first four chapters and the rest of the book builds on the relationship between the animals and their partners. The story builds until a mission for the kids and their spirit animals is unveiled: obtain a token from one of the "great beasts" in order to save the world from war.No sex or bad language, and only sanitized fighting is described, so this book would be appropriate for all young readers.

My daughter first bought this series from the bookstore when Book 1 came out and loved the story line. She really enjoyed reading it and when all was said and done she could not wait for the next book. I liked the Spirit Animal book because it put a different spin on a magical world. Here each kid gets paired with a spirit animal that is the perfect match for them, and whether they know it or not that animal does represent who they will be. I liked that it taught strength, knowledge, and friendship to its readers. Each book after just gets better.

My 8-year old daughter thought that this book "was amazing". She immediately wanted to read book 2. Her favorite series for comparison is the Wings of Fire series by Tui T Sutherland. She loves the four major characters in the book and highly recommends it.

I would rate this book a hundred stars if I could!😃The book was very interesting and I could not get enough of it! I like that the author wrote the book from different points of view, and not all the characters and animals were the same. Also, the fact that the perspectives of the characters changed from dreams too the real world! If you get this book I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!!From my daughter: Age 10

My child tried to read this book and said it was very confusing. The cast of characters was too large and the author spent too much time explaining things in GREAT DETAIL that didn't seem to matter to the plot. Reading between the lines, this book is perhaps too complex for the targeted age group. But young readers who like expansive world building will probably find something to like here. I don't think it's a bad book. Just not an "instant hit" for every reader.

Brandon Mull is my favorite at author, and I have read over 1,000 books in my life. And I’m ten years old. I would recommend thisseries to the universe. Also his “FIVE KINGDOMS” books have been loved sense cave man put blood on walls to write, (like Kovo the ape in the continued series) so, yeah. :)

I am buying this series of books for my granddaughter. I thought that I would read them first before giving them to her. I really liked this first book. The characters are interesting and it is a good read. I hope my granddaughter agrees. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!

This is a good abbreviated version of Robert's Rules. It will literally cover 95% of any parliamentary procedure issues you may have. I bought one of these a year ago to assist in conducting my union meetings. It was such a good resource that I bought two more to keep as references for the rest of the union executive board at my union hall.

I am about to assume chairmanship of a church Board and thought this book might be helpful. If one is looking for a quick reference to Robert's Rules, this is not the item for you. The book is as more of a philosophical discussion of Robert's Rules than statements of the rules. My reaction is to read it somewhat superficially, then put it on the shelf. I think.that I shall look for something different as a quick review.

The Cliff notes version.. But if you have already read Robert Rules and need a quick run down this a great book. Not if you don't know Robert's Rules.

Although I was somewhat familiar with Robert's Rules of Order, wanted a quick reference. Also bought a couple of other more complete versions. The "simplified" version was very useful. This book was well worth the price. I would reccommend it for someone who wants a quick reference for civic groups which utilize Parliamentary Procedure.

This guide booklet does furnish sufficient direction for most of the meetings, etc. we encounter---we're not too interested in the complexities of a legislative process. The information does require prior understanding and a bit of study. Simplifying, by removing the more obscure stuff is welcome to anyone charged with holding orderly meetings.

Not for the current version. It would be nice if they told me what edition this was from. I have RRO 11th edition. Many things are different in the simplified version. I also purchased a RRO for Dummies, it's much better.

This book was purchased because I am president of a college fraternity.We and tons of businesses run meetings in accordance with roberts rules.If you operate or attend meetings which run under Roberts Rules this is a great purchase for you.Those who know the rules the best have the most power.

I needed a quick reference on how to conduct a meeting without it being a full college course. This works.

I am neither a guitarist or guitar collector but decided to pick up this book due to the positive reviews, my previous experience with Deke's music/writing and my general love of classic California country music. I'm not suprised about the wide spread on the reviews posted because (as many have mentioned) this isn't really a guitar book. Instead it a compliation of stories about notable guitar finds told through the lens of Deke's life with a heavy does of music history mixed in. Knowing Deke's leanings as a classic country/rockabilly freak, it should be obvious that most of these "notable guitars" aren't Strats....in fact, many of these guitars and musicians aren't very well known...unless you are a fan of Classic Californa Country and roots music in general...IF YOU ARE, I think you will find this book an extremely enjoyable read.its fun accessible and very easy on the eyes....the book itself is a beauty...it's sort of a mini coffee table book...it's the size of a normal trade hardcover, but there is no dust cover (the cover you see is printed directly on the binding) and it is CHOCK FULL of great pictures...it is perfect for just picking up and reading one chapter at a time...it has been my go to book for Sunday readings the past two weeks...so unless you are digital dominant, I wouldn't opt for the Kindle edition...PS: Volume 2 is coming out in a few weeks and I plan to pick that one up too!

Let's talk books. You know -- those bound paper stacks with words printed in ink? This is a gorgeous little book! The cover has the photos and artwork beautifully printed - no need for a dust jacket. The size is about 11 inches by 7 inches - a welcome and usefully holdable size compared to the normal coffee-table book sizes most guitar books gravitate toward. The paper is semi glossy and robust. Each page is lovingly adorned with a high quality rare photo or long forgotten ad copy or logo from guitars long ago, and the text flows around the graphics. It's a beautiful presentation and a wonderful way to mix a modest amount of graphic content with lots of text content. I wish more collector books were in this style and size.Ok, so the stories: There's scads of absorbing, exciting and interesting short stories, all true, about rare old guitars and their lucky discoverers. Dickerson has a simple, clear writing style that suits the subject matter and never distracts from the story. Tons of personality in these stories -- I love how the author gets into the personalities of the folks who had kept these rare guitars, often not knowing quite what they owned, GREAT Christmas gift for that guitarist in the family.

If you have even a mild case of G.A.S. (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) or an interest in vintage guitars you will LOVE this book. I've long been a fan of Deke's music (and he's great in person too) so reading this book was like sitting down with a fellow guitar geek over a beer and swapping "the one that got away" stories. Like you would expect from any obsessed collector, Deke goes beyond the mere pursuit of rare guitars and gets into the history of the instruments and the people that created them. But this isn't a book of cold, hard facts. Deke whacks this book out of the park. For a non-fiction book on a very linear subject, his writing is stellar and his story telling is superb. Even if you don't care much for guitars or don't know anything about the subject, the book is engaging and has some great storytelling.Without spoiling the book, Deke tells the stories almost as though he is handing them down to you by word of mouth. However he is an excellent writer and the way he articulates his thought and story is absolutely top notch.Oh yes, if you like guitars, this book is ridiculously cool. It brings to light guitars that you might never have thought of or seen and discusses players and their reasoning behind picking esoteric brands of guitars (and does a great job discussing their builders as well). Yes, I know the above is a run-on sentence! Still, the book has all that and some well placed pictures as well.At the very least, this book will tell you some great stories. But even better, it will introduce you to music, instruments and people that shouldn't be forgotten in the sands of time and the ever changing markets of music. Worth every penny!

Deke is brilliant and underappreciated guitarist. I've met several collectors who don't recognize that so much of the thrill and beauty of these instruments is in the wonderful people that crafted or played them. Deke gets it, and you never get the impression that he's simply "collecting pelts" or chasing ego gratification. These are often stories of people, and Deke must be as big-hearted as he is talented. He comes by these treasures honestly, and fully recognizes their true value is bringing people happiness. The mark of that is the amount of people that he's befriended in his search.That said, especially if you've dreamed of cleaning out an attic or basement and finding a Johnny Smith or a great old Tele or Gretsch, this book will make your mouth water. It may even set you out on a search. There are still beds that haven't been looked under! Thanks Deke.

Why spend 120. more and get the newer version. This book was required, actually the 11th ed. was, but this is 99% the same. I would buy this again in a heart beat. If a professor gave an assignment from a question in the book, I would ask someone who paid 150. for the new 11th ed, and get the questions. All the graphs and images are the same as the 11th too. If you are buying this book for any other reason than a requirement, it will provide you with all the information one would need to begin selling via marketing.

Collegebooksdirect illegally covered portions of the book that stated it was an "Instructors Edition" with duct tape and placed a bar code over the "Not For Sale" bar code on the back of the book. I contacted both Amazon.com and Collegebooksdirect to address this issue with no solution from either company. Instead, Collegebooksdirect stated that this is common practice for them (which clearly violates Amazon.com's selling rules and guidelines) and that I should have contacted them earlier. I stated to both the companies that I was under the assumption that the book was a "Student Edition" and did not have any idea that under the tape concealed the listing "Instructors Edition". I did not receive any refund, and both companies refuse to address the situation. BE AWARE! This company sells products that are illegal to transfer!!!!

Was one edition behind the one I needed but it sufficed.

The book title shows up as Selling Today: Creating Customer Value but it usually leaves out "with computers" so i accidentally ordered this one nstead of the right one. make sure it's the one you want

When I asked my niece about the introductory econ class she had taken at Barnard last year, she responded that it was mostly econ theory and then rattled off the names of the most prominent proponents of socialism. When I asked if she'd also studied Friedmen or Hayek, she said she'd never heard those names. Shapiro is so right. Too many colleges are in the business of herding sheep rather than creating thinkers, because thinkers are more likely to challenge the status quo and pull the plug on the power the liberal establishment has gained.But, I can go back to when I was a freshman in college in the 70s. I wrote an English essay in support of a particular candidate who was apparently the wrong one in my teacher's eyes. I got an A for my writing, and a C for the content - never mind that my Republican candidate eventually won (by a landslide).One one-star reviewer noted that students entering college are already liberal and so are not brainwashed in college. I agree with that reviewer. Since my son's high school uses Howard Zinn's History of the American People as the text for its AP US History class, I am painfully aware that the indoctrination begins much sooner than college. Fortunately, I'm a parent who bothers to know what textbooks are being used and can engage my son in discussions that allow him to see that there are two sides to consider on any issue.I will, however, suggest that he should tilt his college application essay to the left because I want him to have the best chance of getting into college in the first place. From there, he will hopefully read this book and then remain open-minded enough to challenge the liberal establishment and leftist totalitarianism that sadly exists on almost every college campus.

This book has me absolutely in awe! Shapiro does an amazing job of encompassing the agenda that is sweeping most of the nation's universities. What a great read for those going into college!

Ben Shapiro presents a thought-provoking argument, backed up by an incredible amount of research, revealing much of academic leadership in the U.S. as radically liberal.Shapiro demonstrates how liberal professors, in an incredibly unbalanced atmosphere, use their lectern to spout liberal propaganda and anti-American sentiment.Before reading this book I was aware of the liberal bias in institutions of higher learning, but I was ignorant concerning the astonishing depth of the problem. It appears that America has an enormous challenge ahead to return our colleges and Universities to a platform of education without indoctrination.A very well written book.

I like Shapiro from what I hear on internet and radio. I think he wrote this book when he was a teenager, and it kind of shows. The depth of argumentation is not what I expected. However, he speaks from his experience which makes the book valuable to that extent.

Ben Shapiro describes the liberal agenda spot on. Very informative.

His presentation has matured since then. So not as penetrating as his current work. However, an important book that is well written especially considering he was only 17.

This book struggles to make any eloquent, solid point. I bought it hopeful and while it does have some interesting points, each topic is not fully developed. Instead it seems like the main goal was to hit as many controversial items as possible and results as a jumble of short, not fully substantiated ideas. Definitely a quantity over quality book.

I can tell the author was young when he wrote it. It's jammed with facts and footnotes which adds to the credibility; however, it doesn't read very smoothly... It does name names and names offending universities, but that gets a bit boring after awhile.

While this book delivers on it's promise to be a "Quick Reference Guide" for the Network administrator, it just does not provide enough information for an experienced NetWare admin. Instead, consider "Novell's Complete Guide to NetWare 5 Networks" You will find all of the information contained in the Administrator's Handbook in this volume, except it goes a bit deeper into the technical aspects of NetWare networks.

This is a very handy book for all Novell admins to keep in their top desk drawer. As a quick reference to many things Netware-related, this is a terrific resource.

I was very much impressed by the quality and quantity of information I found in this book. I'm even more dizzied by the talent of those writers who can compile over 1500 pages in an organized and clear method. Bravo !!!
