Excellent, interesting, and easy to read. I'm a teacher in a school with many Somali refugee students and while taking Somali classes through community ed. the teacher (who was from Dadaab camp) recommended it. I think the book and Rawlence's experiences with the people in the book help most of us who have minimal knowledge of the situation gain some perspective on the refugee experience and the many challenges we never think about. It's hard to imagine growing up and living in an area the geographical size of New Orleans with 400,000+ others and no building permits near war torn areas where no one wants you, not the Kenyan government or the largely controlled territories of Al-Shabaab. Google image Dadaab to get an idea of what the camps look like. If you want to gain some perspective on the situation in Somalia and refugee experiences in general, this is a must read!

I completed this book left with a feeling of profound sadness. This was an eye-opening account of what these people endure on a daily basis - war surrounding them, lack of food, privacy, the elements, and stuck right in the middle of the inevitable tug of war regarding politics. This should be required reading. Just this week my church sponsored a family of 13, I believe, who had been living in a refugee camp for 19 years. They now have housing thanks to members of the congregation who answered the call for assistance. The culture shock will be something they will all have to come to terms with, but I can only imagine their joy.

I have worked with resettled refugees in the US and NZ, and with war-affected families in Uganda, so I am very familiar with the memories they cannot escape. Ben Rawlence does an excellent job of capturing the rawness of life in Dadaab. Especially in this time during which unknowledgeable citizens spout off judgmental stereotypes about refugees, this book can enlighten readers about the terrible conditions they face.

This is the first review I have ever written on any anything. This book has changed me and made my world larger in understanding who Jesus says my neighbor is. I love the way this book was written, it does give you facts, but more importantly it gives you real people living in this nightmare and trying to survive and hold on to hope. It made me cry for the horrendous acts of oppression and evil people are capable of doing to each other without a conscience of what their doing.It made me realize that people without hope are people in danger of committing horrible acts against humanity to survive. I gave this this book 5 stars because I can never be the same after reading it. Being changed for the good of my fellow man is what makes any book worth reading.

A presentation by Mr. Rawlence at the Edinburgh International Book Festival motivated our book club to select this book. It's an excellent work on the plight of Somalian migrants to Kenya in the biggest refugee camp in the world. It also illuminates the dilemma of immigrants and refugees worldwide It should be read by everyone who is concerned about this crisis of humanity which has been invisible to the western press. It must certainly be read by all European and African policymakers on immigration.

I will briefly add my praises to those of [almost] everyone else. We simply cannot understand the world we live in without an intimate and heartfelt acquaintance with the material covered in this book. There may be other ways of acquiring this understanding, but this is among the very best. We come to know and care about these people, their lives, and their interactions--a necessity, of course, if we are to understand ourselves. Absolutely superb.

Ben Rawlence makes the life in the Dadaab camp and the characters of its occupants come alive with incredible descriptions and attention to detail. Reading in the comfort of ones home it is difficult to come to terms with the difficulties and complications of weather and politics that the inhabitants must endure. Although while reading it was tempting to give up, by the end, although feeling helpless to aid them, I was satisfied to have followed these resilient people through their stories and devoutly wish that politics, religion and weather will allow these people to return to their homes in peace. I judged three stars rather than four as the book is a very demanding read.

For me, it is hard for me to read on my iPhone with the Kindle app, but it is still an interesting book. I would buy it in paper form instead, though. I think it is easier to flip real paper pages back and forth than to flip virtual pages back and forth. This is not the book to learn Euclidean Geometry. It requires some basic knowledge of Mathematics; it is not a fast read. It is a good discussion of some of the assumptions and limitations of Euclidean Geometry. One of the points it makes is to show how, for all the reputation for being a logically rigorous system in which all assumptions are defined and justified; Euclidean Geometry includes a good dose of plain "common sense" and "self-evident truths" baked into its foundations. The book also moves on to discussing other geometries, of which one gets a flavor, but not much more. The style is a bit quirky, the author often doesn't tell you where he is going; lets things be revealed. I am not a mathematician, so who knows whether I got the right message or not; I enjoyed it and consider it time well spent.

If you are interested in how people think and in how ideas can shape civilizations, this is a fascinating book. Berlinski is not presenting a biography or even an explanation of Euclid's role in intellectual history. Rather this is an examination of how he thought and how a modern mind puzzles and prods the ancient mind. It is difficult going but worth the effort.

My son loves Peppa. I take this book with us to go grocery shopping and it keeps him occupied. It's a bit big so my 2.5 yo needs a little bit of help to keep it from falling out the stroller but the pictures are a good size for him to find.

Bought this for my 2 year old daughter for Christmas and I’m real impressed by the quality of this hardcover book. As mentioned in a previous review, it’s not hard to find the items for an adult or older child, but I think it’s perfect for my daughter’s age and she’ll love this.

It is 1922 and in an older house, the widow Mrs. Wray and her daughter Frances try to keep things together, keep the house up, and continue to pay the bills left by the late Mr. Wray on his death. They no longer have servants, but Frances does all the work around the house, still they are falling further and further behind.To bring in a little money, they decide to take in paying lodgers. Enter the Barbers, Leonard and his wife Lillian. They turn the Wray house upside down, first just by just the chaos of their being there and then, as the story progresses (Waters writes a great narrative), the story goes from a period drama to love story, to crime drama that will have you turning pages as quickly as you can to get to the end. It's the sort of book where you wish you could re-visit the characters 6 months after the story ends.I was up until 2 a.m. finishing this, something I can say about very few books!

so the story goes, when Dusty Springfield ran into Carole King at the Brill Building in NYC during the early 1960s, she remarked at how much music came out of such a little bit of a thing. you could be equally impressed with the transformative story-telling of Sarah Waters.that said, The Paying Guests is a very generous story. as usual, Sarah Waters was able to create a time in history that was accurate to the point, for me anyway, of actually being in this post WW-I town outside of London. it was very sexy and had all the madness of a new romance that can drive many to do things that should not be done.that said, this would be another one of Sarah Waters’ perfect stories with one exception. the criminal and legal issues were circular and even a bit tedious. because this took over about one third of the book, and at the end, the result was that the excitement and thrall didn’t linger the way i would have liked.but still it was really great.

I highly recommend this book. It will have you on the edge of your seat, and at the same time it will make you think.In 1922 London, a mother and adult daughter take in boarders to make ends meet. The boarders are a young married couple, as flamboyant as the landlords are drab. The daughter and wife begin an affair, fall in love, commit a murder, and cover it up. The story is narrated by the daughter.The bulk of the book focuses on the psychological nuances of love, infidelity, and especially guilt. Other readers have complained about the length of the book and feel that it gets bogged down in the third and final part. I believe that it is purposely detailed and slow moving in an effort to illustrate the main character's anguish and uncertainty. To me, the central questions in the book are how far will you go for love and once you go there, can love survive?In addition to the main story, the author also does a good job exploring post WWI England. Families have lost sons and husbands, returning soldiers are unemployed and ignored by their country, women's roles are changing, and homosexuality is misunderstood and unacceptable. Some interesting parallels to the present day.

“The Paying Guests” is a novel that was the choice for my book club, or I am not sure I would have ever picked it up. My reaction to it is an odd one. The novel held my attention, but for the first 200 or so pages I could not tell you why, as I did not find it particularly interesting. Once the main “event” of the book happens the story barrels along to its conclusion, but overall the text is overwritten and massively redundant.The author’s characterization of Frances (the protagonist) is probably the most successful thing about the book, and Sarah Waters does a decent job of creating a sense of time and place. Although 1922 London does not leap off the pages of this text, it is clearly established.“The Paying Guests” held my attention for stretches at a time, I guess that’s a good thing. However, I suspect that this was partly due to the fact that I wanted to move on and read something else.Would I pick up another novel of Ms. Waters’…I seriously doubt it.

I received the Audible version of this book this morning. Chip and Joanna are the narrators and it is positively delightful hearing this book "in their own words"! Learning about their early life and the way that they have dealt with their problems and how they have lived their lives has been uplifting. They have overcome adversity and have built a life full of love, family, talent, professionalism keeping their faith first and foremost. They never forgotten who and what is important. I have finished the book already and will listen to it again and again! I love their series and hope they will stay on the air for a long, long time!!

Watching Fixer Upper, they seem so successful and put together. But they were not afraid to share stories of failures, change and adaptation. Almost going bankrupt with 4 kids in tow is a big deal for anyone to struggle with. At the same time, they share stories of kindness, generosity from strangers, generosity to strangers, the belief that God has a plan, the belief that helping that one person in a small way may have life changing consequences for that person and for the giver. An overall inspiring book without any “preaching”. The take away? Be not afraid to take risks, work hard, try harder, believe in your dreams, believe in the dreams of your partner, but through all that do not forget love, joy, peace and laughter.

Great reading couldn't put it down made me smile,laugh and see some things in life we all go through similar. My grandson asked if I could read him a chapter as a bedtime story and after, he said they are special and funny Grandma can you read me more tomorrow .Thats a impact that I'm thankful for Thanks and enjoy everyone

I haven't followed Fixer Upper for years like many have. In fact, I saw my first episodes for free on Netflix. Unlike Chip and Jo, we do have a television. However, we have no cable. So I slowly got to know Chip and Jo and my husband and I came to enjoy the spirit of the show and the beautiful designs. When I saw this book I hesitated. Would knowing the back story diminish my view of this couple? Were they really as down to earth as they appeared? If you have similar doubts I'd like to put your mind at east. The Chip and Jo you've come to love on television are even more amazing when you read their story. They have shared some very personal setbacks that shaped who they are as people. I am even more in awe of this company the two of them have created because they are so passionate about it and so, so passionate about people. They truly serve others.If you are looking for an uplifting way to start 2017 prepare to be inspired, energized and have all those warm fuzzies with this book. You will love it.

A good story, their ambition and hard work is to be admired. But the story took a bit of stretching to turn into a book.

I have been a huge fan of Joanna and Chip right from the very first show. I have watched every show many time over and never get tired of it. When I saw that they had written a book I couldn't wait to down load it. It didn't disappoint. Like their show I only wish it were longer because I can never get enough of Fixer Upper. Great job Joanna and Chip!

I ordered this book thinking it was about their designs, so was a little disappointed when it first arrived and I realized it was their autobiography. However, once I finally picked it up and started to read it, I could not put it down, this books tells of their struggles, their deep love and respect for one another and how they overcame the odds to be where they are today. The book is endearing, inspiring and at times will make you laugh out loud, just as Chip does on the show. I love Fixer Upper and am constantly inspired by their designs and family life, if you enjoy the show you will love the book.

I loved the Fixer Upper TV show but found this book to be rather self-congratulatory and boring. Sorry if I'm wrong.
