This is a wonderful book. Dr. Bondar provides an astonishing breadth and depth of information on sex and mating in the animal kingdom in a highly readable and remarkably wise and funny way. Each chapter is short and self-contained, but the book also pulls together its themes. She derives and explains principles, gives examples, and notes counter-examples. The book shows a passion for getting the facts right, and notes points on which science has not yet answered all the questions. Any number of myths and misconceptions are exposed. There also are moments that startled me, made me flinch, or made me go ew!, but they all are on topic and earned. In all likelihood,there will be dozens of facts in this book that will strike you as so interesting that you will be mentioning them for months. I know I will re-read the book because there is just so much worth reading here and so much that is mind blowing that I could not take it all in on one go-through. This is the book equivalent of whom you wish would occupy the empty seat next to you on a long plane flight, if you're in the mood for a great conversation.

More than a few times I found myself putting the book down to marvel at just how complex and...well...weird...animal sex lives can be...and we think human relationships are difficult! Definitely a book to savour.

The five stars only apply if this is a subject that interests you. The book explains the many ways animals reproduce - as shocking and violent as many are. The notion of "when a man and a woman love each other very much ..." does not apply here.

My book club voted to read this book and I will definitely say we were not disappointed!

Must read for anyone with an interest in reproductive biology, wildlife, and sex (which should get pretty much everyone). Entertaining writing with a spoonful of perfectly twisted sense of humor that make the science do down- in a most delightful way!!

Two things hindered my reading of this book. First Dover's over parsing of words in one sentence using just about every punctuation mark. It was distracting and I would have much preferred if he had just put the words down and gave us the derivatives during translation and how it affected to-days ideas.Secondly - I could not follow his numbering on the vases! Don't get me wrong, this is not the first book I've read dealing with ancient vase painting....but his reference numbers were indecipherable.But I like that there were lots of vases and lots of good descriptions and references to stories and events.Dover was very precise in his discussion of homosexual behaviour and the rites of different localities. He was also very detailed in how the homosexual or pederastic relationship came about, expanded and gave many references to rules and regulations. He cited many examples using the vases. It helped me get a more indepth idea of the entire relationship.Also included were relationships between women and women and women and men.I felt this book was more a reference book for scholars studying vases and homosexual behaviour in antiquity than a book for the lay person.

We know that man-boy love was practiced extensively in ancient Greece and that it sometimes involved sexual gratification. We know that Greeks -- at least those of the upper classes -- approved of man-boy romance. We don't know, however, what the general attitude was toward man-boy sex and how frequently it was a part of erotic relationships between men and boys. I am a scholar of ancient philosophy. I came to this book believing that sexual interaction between a man and his beloved was accepted by some, frowned upon by most but generally not taken too seriously. Plato's hard line against it was conservative, not radical, not an "ideal philosophical construction," as Dover would have it. Nothing in Dover's book convinces me that this view is wrong. Indeed, Aischines' speech against Timarchos, to which Dover devotes much space, tends to confirm it. The most natural inference from Aischines' speech is that neither he nor his audience saw anything wrong with being a "lover," but that they did disapprove of using one's beloved for sexual gratification. On p. 54 Dover admits that the physical relationship between lover and beloved is a "matter of conjecture," but elsewhere he seems to take it for granted. The title of his book is _Greek Homosexuality_, but a main question is to what extent Greek pederasty resembled the homosexual relationships with which we are familiar. I don't fault Dover for not answering that question decisively. I do fault him for not asking it.

What I found particularly informative was Dover's fascinating theory on the social use of Homosexual pursuit among the citizen class. Particularly the information that hubris was a crime in democratic Athens. What has this to do with homosexuality, you ask? the first half of the book explains. Ancient greek homosexuality in no way resembles the modern version and it is mind-blowing to see how they differ and how analogous structures, in two different societies, may seem to be opposites. For instance, in speaking of homosexual pursuit Dover is constantly forced, when comparing Ancient Athenian society to modern, to use heterosexual pursuit as an analogy for homosexual pursuit. The resemblances between modern heterosexuality and ancient homosexuality are just that strong!

Dover has one of the only full accounts on Greek Homosexuality to its full extent. Dover was able to write this in a time when homosexuality was swept under the rug and still able to write it unbiased and simply educational. Dover truly set a landmark.

Excellent scholarship, well written.

The book is well researched and that is not my problem, what I do however do not like is when one buys from a seller from Amazon (even if the book is used) it should still have all its pages. I am missing quite a few plates and will need to purchase another copy if I am to complete my study of the topic. Annoyed.

About the Author

Esty Frankel-Fersel was born in Crown Heights, Brooklyn NY. She attended Bais Yacov through high school with a year of seminary in Israel. As a young adolescent, Esty joined a local art school where, for the next 15 years, she took instructional classes, learning the skills of copying and reproducing works of art with oil on canvas. In 2006, Esty came up with the idea of adding an image of a family performing the Tashlich ceremony to Monet's famous Bridge over a Pond of Water Lillies. This led to more converted paintings and to her ultimate accumulation of over 60 works of art with Jewish twists and Yiddish expressions through the arts and to the publication of Converted Masters. Esty currently divides her time, residing in both Bala Cynwyd, Philadelphia and West Orange, NJ.

enjoyed the creativity and trying to guess the holidays depicted without looking at the writing. However poor shipping on 2 attempts when purchasing although i kept the second attempt. the cover came beat up both times.

We bought this book as a gift and they were just thrilled to receive such a unique gift. It’s great fun looking at each page.

I like this book, but the layout is not great for some of the images. The images extend over two pages and an important part of the "converted image is lost in the center where the book is bound. In "Moses Coming down the Mountain," Moses is not visible due to the center binding; in "Moses Among the Lilies," the hand and arm don't align due to the binding, etc. I would have preferred smaller images on one page which would have eliminated the annoying "center binding distraction" to the otherwise great images.

Converted Masters is an exemplar of artistic creativity. Every time I open to one of the pages, I am blown away by the quality and originality of the paintings. Many of them bring a broad smile to my face with the integration of classic painting and Jewish life. I highly recommend this book. It will provide you with many hours of pleasure.

This is makes a great gift! I gave it to my parents. Every time they have guests over, everybody is impressed with artwork, enjoys the Jewish interpretations and laughs about the Yiddish sayings. It's more than a coffee table book, it's a conversation starter.

I received this book as a gift and immediately went to see if it's on Amazon so I could buy a dozen to give to my family and friends. This is my favorite table book by far! I didn't want to put this book down! The texts, mostly from foreigners who traveled through Lebanon, describe the history and the beauty of the country wonderfully. I opened the book expecting to encounter war, anger, and grief, and while the writing does justice to these hard facts of Lebanese life, it also celebrates the place in such a vivid way that the landscapes and communities feel familiar to me now. I especially loved the variety among the contributors - from Lucian to Colin Thubron, there's a real richness of elegant and funny voices to discover. I wish I'd read this before visiting Lebanon. It's a definite (and entertaining) required-reading book for anyone who plans to go!
