This story is great, made even better due to the "what if" you start asking yourself. Love the strong characters, the details that are enough without going overboard, and the story itself. You will find yourself reading long into the night to finish.
A bit of a stretch but I enjoyed it.
Very good reading
The book started off delivering some distinct holes which caused confusion in setting up the characters and story line. However, if one looks past these holes, then one can enjoy the story. I always enjoy when a book takes place in my beloved Yellowstone, and for the most part the story was plausible. Better character development would have served this book well, and may any venture into future writing have this taken into consideration.
This lovely novel is set in the Yellowstone National Park. It mixes the serenity of a national animal preserve but underneath the serenity there are a number of unscrupulous characters using the park for their own agendas.Rachel Stanley is a bear biologist who had been tagging and tracking bears for years. She loves her bears and has given many of them pet names. At the start of the story, she makes a grim discovery of the body of a scientist who appeared to have been killed and partially eaten by a bear. She's also upset with the number of animals who were born malformed, she's seen this in a bear with no ears, to a bird missing a wing, to an elk with three legs. Rachel wonders what fluke of nature could be causing this.We also meet Rainey Jackson, he's fly fishing at the start of the story and meets a Chicago cop, Jen Donahue, who's currently on leave. Rainey is a rare character who is totally honest and possesses so many good traits that both Jen and Rachel are drawn to him. We see him try to help others and disregard any possible consequences to himself. There are multiple plots in this complex mystery, from a corrupt sheriff who wants to go into business and sell antlers to a foreigner, to a black ops government agent conducting experiments in the park, to a crazy poacher who thinks the devil is after him and he has to offer sacrifices.Rachel realizes that the experiments the black ops agent is conducting could be the cause of the deformed animals she's found. The scene when she confronts this agent is most memorable. The reader wants to shout "YES."With both Jen and Rachel attracted to Rainey, we observe a romantic struggle where we want all the characters to succeed and find happiness. The reader follows the characters and it doesn't take long before we see that they are extraordinary. The theme of the novel is good versus evil. There are a few really good people surrounded by another group out for themselves.I was totally satisfied with the story and sorry to see it end.I received a copy of this book in return for my honest review.
A non-stop thriller set in some of North America’s wildest country, In Velvet takes you deep into the hearts of a hard case local detective and a Chicago cop as they take on a corrupt sheriff, a pathalogical poacher, and a lethal black ops manager to solve this ghastly mystery and restore the natural order in Yellowstone National Park.In Velvet is a creepy thriller and so unique! Rachel, a bear biologist, is discovering some very unusual behavior out of the grizzly bear population in Yellowstone Park as well as what appears to be sightings of extinct species and horrific animal mutations. Just exactly what is going on in Yellowstone? This is entirely unlike anything I would normally read but animal mutations, Yellowstone Park and potential government corruption intrigued me so I picked it up for a read and was not disappointed in the slightest. This book starts off with high intensity and it doesn’t let up until the very last page. The situations are eerie, the characters are creepy and the plot is thrilling. It’s everything the synopsis promises and such a good reads! There are a lot of characters in In Velvet – a Chicago cop, Bear Researcher, Fly Fisherman (who is also an ex-investigator), then add in a corrupt cop, various other Yellowstone employees, researchers and investigators the cast can be complex however they are relatively easy to keep organized. A few of the characters have similar personalities and speak using similar dialogue/dialect and may become muddled but these instances are rare. The plot itself was thrilling, intriguing and a bit terrifying but only because it is so frighteningly possible. To read about animal cloning in Europe and animal testing in laboratories all throughout the US is it really that impossible to consider corrupt behaviors that result in mutations in what should be protected species? In Velvet is a thrill from start to finish! While I expected a good read it easily surpassed my expectations.Review by Ashley LaMarClosed the Cover
