This book is amazing. It covers the Alaska inside cruise route. It covers every port on the inside cruise route in great detail providing historical facts and stories about the port. It also provides information such as "Walking Around Town", and a list of excursions that you can take in that particular port going into general details on specific excursions. It also covers a route to the next port providing details that you will see enroute, and passenger tips. There is also a large fold-out map of the inside passage. Most cruise ships provide a naturalist who provides commentary over the speaker as you go through areas, but they don't cover the entire passage. This book does! If you enjoy reading about the history and stories of the areas, you will enjoy this book. Highly recommend!
Planning a cruise to Alaska? This is a wonderful book to read both before you go and to take with you on the ship. It has many interesting stories about the state. Mr. Upton has been a resident of Alaska and offered tips on things that would have been unknown to the average tourist on a cruise ship. For instance, excursions may be bought on the ship but are usually rather expensive. He pointed out that sometimes you can go on the dock and find similar excursions at a better price by local vendors. He also said that sometimes cab drivers would give you a one-on-one tour for very little as well. We did this in Juneau and had a very interesting Klingit driver who told us many local stories and took us to some out of the way places for some great pictures. He also told which excursions were really worthwhile to spend your money on.(The Skagway RailRoad) A map comes with the book and shows you mile by mile where the ship is. Other helpful things that he talked about in the book were the background of each of the towns that the ship visited as well as the glaciers, etc. He also talked about the fishing and the wildlife in the different areas. If you can only afford one book for your trip to Alaska, this would definitely be the one to buy.
This book came HIGHLY recommended for our upcoming Alasks cruise on Holland. I heard they sell them on the ship because they follow the mile markers. I thought I would save money and purchase from Amazon. Love the pull out map and it has gotten me so excited for our cruise. You can tell Joe has spent his entire life on these waters, he knows and has stories for every crook and crevice!!
We took this book on our Alaska Cruise June 4-12, 2014 and used it as one of our resources for the stops along the way. The maps at each chapter beginning were excellent as well as the giant fold-out map in the back for following along. We found though that some of the rates quoted for activities (such as the Tram in Juneau) were quite out of date. However the featured activities at locations and the recommendations were well described. The book itself it soft cover but of very high quality glossy stock so it traveled well. I purchased it based on previous Amazon recommendations and I would recommend it as well. It was an excellent resource.
Highly recommended for the Inside Passage or Voyage of the Glaciers cruises. Great info on the voyage itself along with stories and info about the ports. Comes with a map to follow along and points out places of interest. Don't let the publication date to scare you off. This is THE book you want for your cruise.
This is a wonderful book. It is very informative about the various towns, villages and sights to see in Alaska. This is not a book to help you choose a cruise, but is meant to be used after booking. Beautiful pictures, maps and great suggestions on sights to see. Even gives historical anecdotes. It is a great book for visiting Alaska. I would recommend this book to family and friends.
Preparing for our Alaska cruise, I bought this book for my Hubby for his birthday. He's enjoyed reading it very much - He's gotten a lot of useful information for our trip and has just loved all of the stories that the author tells. Definitely worth buying!
Useful. The personal stories of the author, and the stories he relates, make it worthwhile. As I sail, I will have these stories in mind, and know to look for some things others may not be aware of. I admire the author's undertaking, but its actual usefulness as a concurrent sailing guide is an impossible task.
