This is a really great guide to a variety of different backcountry areas throughout Colorado. This guide covers a wide swath of the state and a variety of different landscapes. Even lifelong residents of Colorado will probably discover several new gems in this book. The guide is easy to read and is pretty thorough in regards to technical information.

Great book, mostly day hikes but there is a good selection of longer hikes too. Lots of hikes I've never heard of.

Excellent book. A godsend for our hiking club in planning group hikes.

Great trail book. The maps are broken down by milage in sections and I love this!! Wish it had even more trails!!

Best guide for the hikes covered. The pictures speak for themselves.

This is my second David Day book (I also have Utahs Incredible Backcountry Trails) and they are excellent. The maps are very good and the descriptions are accurate and informative. These guides are sure to help you locate and enjoy many hours of hiking on these Awesome trails.

Wonderful, well-written book. Love the photos, maps, and plethora of information.

Must have for anyone trying to escape into the backcountry. Great book.

I was looking for of a historical survey of energetic materials. This dealt more with the technical side. If you are into physical chemistry, this will interest you. As I was not, this was not that interesting to me.

Very informative

I purchased this book as a sophomore chemistry student. It's easy to read and follow the text, and lacks the boring textbook aspect. Great book for the serious student, or even professionals looking for a brush up on explosives. Covers the history, and the future or explosives, as well as everything in between.

You really need a background in chemistry to understand everything in this book

I was disappointed by the book as named, and expected much more in the way of chemistry of explosives.Unfortunately, what I found was mostly thermodynamic data and equations and chemical "reaction" equations that often did not even include structures, just formulae, reminiscent of high-school (USA) chemistry equations. In this respect, this book is most certainly NOT for the organic chemist. I do not believe a single curly arrow is to be found in this book !I would like to point out in particular my displeasure with the way that chemical structure is depicted in this book. Unfortunately the author appears to be unfamiliar with the ChemDraw application or other similar drawing programs. It would be polite to say that some chemical reaction schemes are painful to look at. Take for example the reaction scheme 7.10 on page 131 (search for "hexamethylenetetramine" to find it in the book preview): I have never seen a 6-6 fused ring system look like 2 cyclobutane rings fused with unholy angle strain, but lo and behold there it is. These are the types of chemical structures i expect from the 1800's or from a old biology textbook, but not a modern chemistry book!I would like to note that I was particularly disappointed with the caliber of the graphics included within the book (structures, as noted above and otherwise). The few schemes that are present in the book look as if they've been drawn in MS Paint or a similarly simple program and lack the finesse I expect from modern books.In summary,this is much more a physics book concerning explosives, dominated by thermodynamics numbers and equations. I read this book in a desultory fashion while on a cross country drive. Here follow my impressions.The HP Lovecraft Institute is by David Bischoff who is apparently widely published, although I've never read anything by him. He has written several other novels with similar titles like JRR Tolkein University. This book is a publication from Wildside Press, an Alan Rogers book (so I guess he was the editor?), with a publication date of 2002. List price is $34.95, no discounts noted. I forget how long ago I got my copy, or how much I paid for it. I can't figure out who did the cover art, a sort of picture of HPL in an octopus like body, rather drab. Page count was 386. Physically it is a handsome book but the editing was remarkably poor. Typos abounded, with misspellings, word subsitutions and characters changing names in mid page. This reflects the fact that the editor should have demanded a few more rewrites.I'll be brief and will not describe the plot in detail. This may spoil it somewhat for those who care. Basically this is a case where an evil sorcerer type has used an arcane power source to prolong his life. By means of blood sacrifice, now that the stars are right, he intends to open a gate to allow Nyarlathotep access to our plane. Sounds very Lovecraftian. Didn't read that way. This novel was fraught with problems. In fact the genre seems much more suited to the short story, although recently I did enjoy Balak and the work of Cody Goodfellow. HPL Institute read more like a Stephen King wannabe than an HPL knock off. This sorcerer type has killed his brother years before, and enslaved his niece, making her a vampire (not very mythos). Of course there is a disillusioned minister with a son who has nascent telepathy and telekinesis powers, an oversexed teen girl, and the brother has been resurrected somehow as a skeleton named Mr. Bones who communicates with an innocent young girl, making his home in her closet....I could go on. Stock King situations and characters, unscary gore verging on the schlocky, unsexy sex verging on softcore porn, paper thin charcters who do not relate to one another in a believable way (particularly when the son catches the dad in hanky panky with a high school girl he has some interest in), weak dialogue, a confused jumble of subgenres, less than compelling prose. Well I liked a few of the brief vignettes but mostly this was forgettable. No sense at all of the cosmicism of HPL which I really like. I also need to mention that HPL made an appearance as someone the sorcerer type told all to, and who then wrote up this truth as fiction and who was then offed by the sorcerer. I really dislike this plot device, where HPL is mentioned as having written fiction that was actually true.With everything else I guess the most unforgivable fault for me was that it was boring. I kept looking wistfully at other books in my stack, but forced myself to finish based on the price paid. If the prose had sparkle I still could have recommended this book. As it was, at the price, I suggest borrowing it from the library instead of paying cash if you really want to read it. You miss nothing if you give it a miss. I certainly was relieved to be done with it. On the other hand it was much better than stuff like Horror Between the Sheets.

Overall I enjoyed this book. However, though its a nicely produced hardback, the editing is abominable. Misspellings, badly arrange words, incorrect words, homonyms and other severe editing errors severely disrupts the reading experience.

This was an interesting story, little to do with HPL, but interesting none the less. The humor comes in as you read along and start playing continuity police. Misspellings, characters switching in mid conversation, a magic car that can't decide if its a Lincoln, a Dodge or a Plymouth, etc... Once I stopped being upset at the quality of the editing and got into the game, I started counting/writing down the mistakes from pg 116 on and hit 39 "oopses". This book is a prime example of "proof reading by spellcheck". So the question becomes Did Wildside Press fire all their proof readers before printing this book? If you get distracted by continuity errors, try another of Bischoffs books. If it doesnt bother you, this at least has interesting characters and a plot line with potential.

The new field of "whiteness studies"-the exploration of how whites construct their racial identities and their relations with minorities-gets an eye-opening addition with this survey of upper-class white men. Sociologists Feagin and O'Brien interviewed 100 of the movers and shakers in business, academia, government and other professions-opinion makers for the white community-on their personal attitudes toward and interactions with blacks and other minorities and recorded their opinions on topics including affirmative action and interracial marriage. Their research indicates that while overt expressions of racism are rare (although not entirely absent) a pattern of subtle bias and stereotyping has emerged, part of what the authors term a "collective white consciousness." These prominent white men tend to ascribe the social disadvantages of blacks to family breakdowns and cultural pathology, not discrimination and they oppose or have reservations about affirmative action (although they often support mild variants under other names). Members of the white male elite underestimate the effects of segregation and discrimination against blacks, overestimate the harm done to whites by "reverse discrimination," and still feel uneasy at the prospect of their daughters bringing black men home for dinner. The authors ascribe many of these sentiments to distorted media images and to the "white bubble" of segregated suburbs, white-dominated workplaces and social settings, where whites seldom interact with minorities on an equal footing or gain any understanding of their lives. Moreover, there is also a "group ideology" at work, particularly when interviewees interpret a hypothetical vignette about a white salesclerk ignoring black customers as a story about black criminality instead of a story about white discrimination. Here's an intriguing idea: a book that views contemporary racism through the eyes of "elite white men." Racism in the U.S., the authors argue, is a far more subtle phenomenon than it used to be, but it exists nonetheless--and it still excludes minorities from opportunities afforded white males. Based on hundreds of interviews with those elite white men--business managers, corporate execs, and the like--the book covers a wide range of subjects, from the respondent's first encounter with an African American to interracial dating, affirmative action, and (of course) crime. The authors use the interviews to demonstrate that even someone who believes he is completely free of prejudice may still use language and express ideas that clearly indicate a different way of thinking about members of minority groups. This is not a balanced, multisided look at racism; the authors are presenting a thesis--one that is sure to grab plenty of attention--not trying to cover every point of view.
