This is a must have book for any filmmaking student or professional in my opinion. Understanding the components and sub components that combine to create visual structure is just as impoerative as understanding and learning how to manipulate the components of story structure when writing a script.This and the newer edition are excellent tools to have and be able to reference.

I had to get this book for a class I'm taking (Visual Language of the Moving Image) at UCF. Like most books that we are required to purchase, I wasn't too happy about it... But, honestly, this one is different. It is very well written and illustrated. I actually love this book. Bruce Block knows his stuff, and, more importantly, he knows how teach it.

It is not in my habit to comment every book I own, but with this one I have to make an exception. I have read many books on both visual aesthetics and cinematography, and by far I must say that this one is the most exiting and detailed book on the subject that I have seen so far.The book is very well structured and explains all imaginable (and many un-imaginable) aspects of visual composition and staging of both moving and still image.I also believe that this book is valuable not only for cinematography, but for all other brands of visual artistry as well. Even if you were only painting pictures, this book has valuable things to give to you.I simply love this book.

But if you are using pictures to tells stories, do you know what your pictures are saying? Today, with the means of production accessible to everyone with about $10K, we are about to see the equivalent of desktop publishing a decade later with video.Do you want your production to look like the video equivalent of the ransom notes produced by people who made every letter a different font just because they could?The Visual Story makes the fundamental elements of visual language understandable. The book is in wonderful condition, I just wish I knew it had a CD with it I might have bought a new copy to have all the files that were on the disk.

It's OK, It's a textbook.

I truly don't get the negative reviews. In particular the one that reads: " It does not have may soap samples and does not go indepth. Also everything is abbreviated so you have to lean all the abbreviations to understand exactly what they are speaking about." There are absolutely samples of SOAP notes. Of course, it doesn't go into depth as to what to chart as to physical findings and treatment, that's something you learn to do while in school to obtain your massage license. It does however, provide plenty of suggestions as to get the most amount of information on each client, with the least amount of time. This is about things to consider when charting; how detailed for the environment and modality. There is a great appendix with symbols and abbreviations you can use and learn to chart more efficiently.Yes, there is a CD with forms to use. They are PDF, so if you want to customize them, you'll need to convert to your favorite platform.I think the book is really good and deserves 5 stars.

This book is woefully inadequate. The disc that has subpar forms is difficult to use. You cannot download the forms or customize them in any way. They come in a PDF format. A waste of time and money. I'm very disappointed.

This is an excellent book. I liked the writing style and information so much, I ordered copies for the other LMTs in my office. I especially like the section on Ethics.

This is a handsome book at an affordable price, thank you, Inner Traditions. Tobias Churton is an intelligent, articulate and, learned person. It is a sheer delight to follow his train of thought. Churton does justice to John the Baptist whom, besides being a contemporary of Jesus, by some accounts, was also his equal. This is a learned book written in a lively style. I am grateful to Mr Churton for shedding light on a towering but nearly forgotten Spiritual Giant (John the Baptist). I live in Puerto Rico which originally was christened San Juan Bautista by Christopher Colombus.

I never suspected that John the Baptist played a major role during the beginnings of Jesus' ministry. This deeply and excellently researched book reveals, in a very respectful way, possibilities about the real roles of the Baptist and Jesus, their families, spiritual relationship, and where and what they taught. The book is intriguing, however at times it becomes overly thorough in its explanation of each of the individuals involved in the life and death of John the Baptist. Anyone interested in the origins of Christianity and what was truly occurring during that time, must read this book.

I have always enjoyed Tobias Churton's books on Gnosticism, and this one was no exception. Having been curious for a number of years about John the Baptist's connection to the Gnostic sects in the desert, Churton's excellent research did much to help me understand those connections to Gnosticism and the evolution of Gnostic Christian groups during and after the time of Jesus. An excellent read for those interested in Gnosticism and its relation to the development of early Christianity and perhaps sheds some light on why the Apostle Paul ended up the chief theologian for modern Christianity.

He constantly irritated me by not knowing or acknowledging what most who study that era know.

The author starts from a curious point to bring them a series of reflections on Early Christian Era and the roles of John, Jesus and Paul. In some parts the author seems extremely biased, although he tries to make us to understand the whys.The best thing in this book is that it made me feel compelled to search for more information and understand better that time from which we have so few documents, and look for the other side of this story, so I can reach my own conclusions

I expected a decent scholar quality from the book considering the academic credentials of the author. I quit reading it three times taking the books in my hands again hoping to get some value for the money I paid. The book is a parody of exposition; no point being made, no assertions being proven at least plausible, nothing valuable to be said about John the Baptist. As I have noticed as a pattern in this kind of books about Templars, Jesus, Secret Societies, etc, the author does the same, filling the narrative with not addressed questions just to create an air of doubt so that his words appear in a sound ground. Reading this book made me angry and frustrated at many points, trying to figure out if the author is blasphemous, tries to ridicule the Gospels or just writing a cheap book for profit? Her's some pearls:-the upwards pointing figure of John the Baptist in DaVinci's famous painting may mean " up your ass"!-John the Baptist was wearing fine clothes and fed by his pupils food donations-named John the Evangelist the author of John's Gospel should be John the Baptist or something since John the Baptist was the evangelist ( messenger ) of Jesus Christ.-Saint Paul had a political agenda with his hands full of blood. Any credible argument? Not at all.-any sound argument how John the Baptist is a patron of Freemasonry? I cannot recall.I am throwing this book to the garbage.

About the Author

Writer Mike Carey, best known for his work on Vertigo's Lucifer and Hellblazer, has made his mark in comics. Lucifer doesn't try to have the same symbolic value as the original Neil Gaiman novels. He's only trying to be determinator on a mission, and on that front, he delivers like nothing I've seen before.Lucifer dives into the mythology of several supporting cast members from the previous Sandman works, as well as Biblical characters, for obvious reasons. Carey does an excellent job building interesting characters for Lucifer to play off of, even though he's always the most commanding presence.If you like comic books, you'll love this one.

Full disclosure: I came to the Lucifer books because of the TV series. I am a devout comic fan, had read the Sandman series, but never picked up Lucifer. My mistake! I can easily say that the 5 volume arc is one of the best, most intelligent and creative graphic novel/comic/literary creations I've ever picked up. It would have been easy to make Lucifer into a parody, a cliche, a throwaway joke- instead Carey et al treat the subject matter with respect and erudition, and more than a few readers will be surprised by the twists and turns this series takes. The TV show is fun and silly, but this is so much more, and you won't be disappointed if you check it out!

Like many people, I'm sure, I bought this based of of my enjoyment of the Fox TV series of the same name. Prior to the show, I'd never heard of the graphic novel and was only vaguely aware of the Sandman series. So far I haven't a thing to complain about! The artwork, the coloring, the lettering, the layout, the story...hell...everything about this is fantastic.Having read the first collection (this, Book One) and watched every episode of the TV series, I can say that the respective Lucifers are definitely both very similar and very different - I'm aware that is something of a contradiction, just roll with it. The TV series is more of a buddy-cop, crime solving serial with a supernatural twist, while the graphic novel touches on concepts far more...metaphorical, theological, and metaphysical than could really be addressed on TV. Both are very good, for what they are, but - if one were to take Tom Ellis out of the equation - the hands down victor would be the graphic novel, by a wide margin.Enjoy both for what they are!

I was thrilled to find this reprinting because tracking down 11 trades from over 10 years ago is not an easy task if you expect them to be on good quality. This book was everything I wanted it to be and the binding was thick and hard enough to sustain reading close to 400 pages without so much as a wrinkle. Mike Carey has done an excellent job at humanizing this ethereal cast of characters and making their plots and ambitions believable. I especially love what an intellectual smart ass they made the former lord of hell, it suits him well. Definitely a book for mature readers, a lot of situations although not graphic and at times implied are very adult in nature. You don't need to physically see the neo-Nazi shove a broken bottle up a gay man's ass to understand that it may be disturbing to a younger reader. The dialogue is also written with a verbose vocabulary which may have younger readers consulting a dictionary once per page. That being said, to the adult reader, I cannot recommend this enough.

This volume picks up right where Lucifer left in the Sandman series. He has abandoned Hell and decides to do his own thing. Tired of being the symbol of all evil he opens a Nightclub in LA. Yes, that tv series of the same name was based on this comic. Very very loosely based on this series. Lucifer does not solve crimes for the police. He doesn't care about any of that. He isn't a playboy, sleeping with every woman in LA. This series is far superiorto the mess that is the tv show. You ar missing out if you haven't checked this out. Constantine makes an apearrance.

I purchased after watching seasons 1-3 of the television series Lucifer. I enjoy Neil Gaimen's Sandman series and as he's the creator of the characters in both mediums i thought this would be more alike than it turned out to be.If you, like me thought you would be reading the comic format origins of the tv version you will be disappointed.However if you approach it with fresh eyes its a very good story. The art is clean and just lovely to see, no problem with actually being able to read the text. A lot of the elements in the tv show are here as well, just in a slightly different aspect.for the most part all the characters are darker than they are shown on tv, but it fits in with the story if the Ruler of hell, the fallen angel. LUCIFER. Ill be picking up the rest of the series to read.

Where a lesser writer would use gods and magic as a cheap way to keep your attention, Mike interweaves everything into the narrative with passion and soul. As a fan of mythology and religious ideas this was completely engrossing. It kept me excited both with the unfolding story of Lucifer himself, a rich and mysterious character in these comics, not the one dimensional villain we typically see, and every subject that was delved into, from Tarot, to Japanese deities, and so on. The writing itself should also be mentioned as it can be beautifully poetic and evocative.

To me, this is the culmination of all that Neil Gaian tried to do with Sandman. I do not mean that as an insult to Gaiman, but as a testament to the ability and brio of Carey.This is a darkly rich and wonderful comic that shows the limits of imagination and comics as an art form.I adore it and look forward to reading the next volumes.

The last time I read a comic or graphic novel was Archie 20 years ago. Lucifer is obviously very different. It took me a while to get the mechanics and the editing on reading a comic book, but after you understand that and flow with it it is awesome. Such a complex carachter and story. I loved the visuals, and the theme. Lucifer, the antihero was amazing, he is totally commited to his goals and you end up loving him against all common sense. Philosophically, God and Lucifer in this story, shift your perception of religion in a very cool, strange and dark way. (you have to be open minded though).

The first third of this Sierra Club book was put to use on our Outer Banks vacation. This is a good book that covers every part of the coast, not just the barrier islands. I liked the historical and cultural background presented on each area. I expected there to be a great deal of information on the local flora and fauna since it is a Sierra Club book, and there was. It provides a wonderful listing of birds and animals to keep your eyes out for. There are also good explanations of the geology behind the coast in the introduction. I would have liked a little more information about each area (there is no info on lodging, food, etc.) and some of it was outdated. The book is appealing because it covers the entire southeastern coast, so I know I will use it in the future!

Apart from the many painful grammatical errors, the book is both poorly organized and incomplete in terms of the topics covered. The book reads like a long FAQ summary. Do not know if there is a hard copy, a CD, or on line instruction. for this complicated product which I received as a gift.Fire cube has not worked smoothly or correctly since being set up by my knowledgeable Son in Law.

Having spent a lifetime researching New Jersey shipwrecks, and as President and Founder of the New Jersey Maritime Museum, I can't say enough about this well-written book and its relevance to New Jersey's rich maritime history. Capt. Nagiewicz has succeeded in accurately portraying a part of our history that has largely been ignored by historians. Sadly, our schools teach little about this subject; perhaps this book should be on the list of "required reading" in our schools.

Very interesting book of New Jersey's history. Well researched, I would diffidently recommend this book. However it wouldn't hurt to edit the book for grammar.

Awesome read, couldn't put it down, very riveting, loved the book and looking forward to more from the author, it got me reading others in the series, I'd strongly recommend it to anyone, it's a must read, keep them coming Mr. Nagiewicz, you're a great guy and a great author

There is no one else with remotely the knowledge and experience in diving the coast of New Jersey (and much of the Western World, for that matter), as Captain Steve, and he brings that experience and knowledge to the fore in this tremendous account of shipwrecks and even subway car wrecks (yes, you can dive on sunken subway cars off the coast of New Jersey). A terrific addition to every maritime history and archaeology library.

In that book, Kadavy's prose is as eye-grabbing as his insights are eye-opening.So I was excited to read this book. Again, I was dazzled by Kadavy's way with words, but the impact on me was much deeper this time, as the subject of this book is very dear to me: how to achieve consistent creative output.I believe some of us are, by temperament, born to create. If we don't labor to transfer the contents of our inner-world into the outer-world, we will silently die a spiritual death. Then eventually, we will die a physical death, with our art still trapped inside of us.This fact may be obvious to many, but when you focus on the urgency of creating, it typically makes us creatives more neurotic. We obsess over unimportant details, and get trapped in self-defeating thought loops "This isn't good enough." "I'll never make it". "I'll never finish this."Personally, these thought loops used to leave me with a sense of helplessness. It even triggered a deep depression in me last year. Kadavy speaks beautifully about the mystery of creativity here.My next action is: Set a timer and work on a creative project that inspires me for ten minutes.

"The Heart To Start" is a concise, thought-provoking read with minimal repetition, that shines a light on the reasons why it's hard to get the momentum to begin something, and in doing so, arms you with a new perspective that can help remove obstacles and clear the path towards doing the creative work you were meant to do.It's a common practice these days for authors with successful blogs and podcasts to distill them into book form and republish their content. I'm happy to say that "The Heart To Start" is not one of these books. Generally always tackling an interesting topic, Ian Bogost's problem it's the academic way in which he approaches subjects, pushing theories that don't feel like they play out in the messy realities where art meets interactivity and skill/reaction based challenge.Sometimes his writing style is a little too provocateur, a little too imperialistic, though that is often employed in delivering an interesting idea or thought.If I could I would have given How to Talk About Videogames 3.5 stars.

This is actually a collection of a lot of things Bogost has written online, but it works very nicely. It's a beautiful little paperback and the content itself (if you're not aware of Bogost's writing) is excellent. There are a growing number of people writing about video games in a critical and intelligent way but Bogost is in a league of his own. Comfortably the best writer on video games around.

There are a lot of ways to do games criticism right and a lot of ways to do it wrong. While there are things that I disagree with Bogost on, his insight on how to talk about video games is clear and helpful for anyone wanting to get into the craft.

Less a tutorial on ways to approach and discuss video games than a collection of writings by Bogost. This is not to say thatâ€™s a bad thing! Bogost has a rich perspective on games in a field of analysis he more or less founded, but understand this is more a collection of philosophical writings than a how-to of critical analysis, as the title suggests

Do you ever ponder how Rothko paintings and Doom have both constrained their creators tocertain types of expected forms? What about contrasting William Carlos Williamsâ€™ imagist verse to Monument Valley? If so â€˜How to Talk about Videogamesâ€™ (2015) by Ian Bogost is the book for you. Itâ€™s full of well written, serious criticism of games in the spirit of Art, Music and Literature criticism. Bogost has a PhD from in Comparative Literature and is a Professor at Georgia Tech. He also designs games. The book is a collection of related essays.The book has a clever introduction that looks at the purpose of criticism itself which is really good. Bogost says that reviews and criticism are different and deliniates them carefully. Then the book goes on to discuss Mario Kart, Ms Pac Man, Home Alone, Flappy Bird, Bully, Puzzle Games, Sports Games, gaining mastery in games and various Independent Artistic games that aim to be videogames as art. Bogost also ponders if games will be perpetually an adolescent art form.As far as this sort of thing goes this book is about as it gets. Itâ€™s also worth noting how games, compared to comics and other art forms are getting criticism like this fairly early in their existence. Games are particularly hard to write about because the act of playing is so critical to the game just as criticism of sports in an artistic sort of way is very hard. The book looks at the plot of games and considers how novel the revelation but this sort of criticism doesnâ€™t work as well in things where the narrative isnâ€™t that important.If youâ€™re interested in games and read The Atlantic or the New Yorker or the arts section of The Economist or something similar then this book will provide some thoughtful and entertaining times.

I came to this book on the strength and delight of Bogostâ€™s book Alien Phenomenology, a long-time favorite. This book, How to Talk about Video Games, is a strange choice for me because I am a most occasional of occasional gamers. But I am a computer modeler, and my interest in digital objects is based on trying to understand how such things represent real objects and their relationships through relational mappings of real objects to digital ones and back again. There is something similar to gaming in these endeavors. This book is not about that per se, but I found his insights into what makes a good game, how we play them, how games succeed or fail, how marketing works in the Darwinian processes that drive games into the forefront. It explores the history of gaming and its evolution. The book points to the possibility that digital games are worthy of critique in the same way that literature and art are, with their own set of purposes and conditions of satisfaction. All in all a fantastic book (even if one is not a gamer) that explores the place of games in our culture. Iâ€™d say that if you are interested in games enough to have enjoyed Clineâ€™s Ready Player One, youâ€™ll find this book fascinating.
