Alot of the complaints in the reviews about this book are that "It is too slow", and "It is too difficult to read." Guess what! This is not The Hunger Games or The Twilight Series. This is actual literature from over 100 years ago. Yes it takes work to get through the dialogue. It is not exactly a page turner in that regard. But if you can be patient, and "get into the groove' of the dialect, then you will soon be able to read through the conversation with less effort. It is rewarding! Of course, I am reading this as an adult, and because I chose to do so, and not for a homework assignment. I am glad I took the time to do so, because this to me is what literature is all about. It's rewarding - not just a book you cruise through in two days, and then give it to your 10 year old who also reads it in two days. There is a lot of social commentary, as well as commentary about the inherent decency of man, and what we do to screw up our kids along the way. Critics are correct, this is not a children's book. It just happens to be about a child. Mark Twain was a masterful writer. I hope you take the time to work through this book. Also, the Dover Thrift version does not appear to be censored - as some of the other books are purported to be.
I wanted to re-read this due to the discussions of removing it from school libraries and required reading lists related the use of a certain word. I read this in the fifth grade, and at that time, it was simply a great adventure of two boys . Now, over 50+ years later I see it in an entirely different light. It is not just an adventure of two boys... but also a social and political commentary on slavery. Now I truly appreciate the significance and genius of Mark Twain. It is a part of our history that we need to study and learn from. Like the Holocaust...we should never forget.
I wonder if somewhere in the Great By and By Mr Clemons is having himself a little chuckle every time some English teacher assigns his tome to another class of befuddled students. Surely the man who created the least literate, most rebellious, and most happily ignorant character in American Lit would appreciate the irony. He might even crack wise at the serious sermonizers and pretentious pontificators lauding his deeply flawed novel as the prodigious. Of all people, Mark Twain would know a sham when he saw one. Even taken in the context of the day, this novel's glaring inadequacies and blunders are hard to miss. But then, he would also recognize the American-ness of the response, as well, the salesman's spiel, the overblown praise, the pumped up pomposity, the urgent, if insecure, need to apply superlatives. For, like his book, America has all of the same qualities, and in that regard, it is indeed The Greatest Most Perfectest American Novel Ever Written!
I've been a votary of Mark Twain all my life, reading everything I could/can find of his, and there's plenty. Originally read this classic, along with "Tom Sawyer" as a young boy. I remember this specifically because I was so proud of my new book, in which I had written my name and age - 11 years old. Sadly, and this is a real-life true story, our family dog ate it! I swear! Anyway, at that young age I became hooked, and shortly thereafter moved on to other Twain works. It seems the next I remember was "The Mysterious Stranger" which impacted me greatly as an adolescent teenager. After that I became, as they say - off to the races. So, as an oldster now, while in a state of angst at having finished my last book and not having anything readily in mind to read,I decided to journey back and re-visit my old friend Huck. Well, I wasn't disappointed. Still brought tears to my eyes as I laughed uncontrollably at all the idiotic and downright dumb carrying-ons the characters engage in. But of course, as always, Twain's characters exhibit some good ways too, to offset the bad. This story is a classic for a reason. In the end, Mark Twain's understanding of the vagaries, complexities, and plain silliness of humans, and our human nature, was simply--to me--uncanny. And his ability to portray this through funny, whimsical, and often satirical storytelling was better than anyone else, before or after. People do good, bad, crazy, rational, silly, inexplicable, and more...stuff. All the time. They always have and they always will. They can't help themselves. They're human. Mark Twain's exposition of this was - is - a GIFT to mankind. As an aside, and as a special bonus in reading Mark Twain, I find it extra refreshing to read un-revised, unvarnished, un-PC tainted, true-to-life depictions of the way things actually were. So, if you can't or are too sensitive to deal with reality, then my recommendation is that you stay in your sanitized bubble, and deprive yourself of the joys of the truth. It really is your loss. For all the rest, just read and enjoy!
I loved this book in high school so I thought that I would buy it for my kids to read one day when I'm older. Little did I know that buying cheap would be buying weird. I love Huckleberry Finn, but this book is about 12"x9" with huge white gaps in margins and for whatever reason this book has "_" underscores in place of spaces in the weirdest contexts. I feel like I received a manuscript for the publishers to edit out. I'm not sure I'm actually supposed to be holding this. What kind of first draft stuff is this?TLDR; The book is a classic for the ages, but the publishers botched the job
